Well, is anyone else on the board feeling vindicated that we didn't draft cousins.
I mean when health concerns were expressed everyone else thought "oh the saints are using it as a cop out".
Obviously after Cousins' hamstring went last night I felt bad for him but part of me felt vindicated and pretty pleased we didn't take him.

I felt bad for him too. I wanted to see him play some good footy.

I stopped watching the telecast as it became a Carlton love-in between Tim Lane and Robert Walls (they needed to get a room).

But I tuned back just when he twanged it, and they said that he'd been in discussion with the quack at 3/4 time. Sounds like poor player management to me - they were getting pumped so why not put him on ice?

Looked great early in the game - clean hands and got plenty of it.

Whilst I had mixed feelings about us pursuing him, I don't think the Tigers would complain too much about the extra $1m in memberships they would have sold due to the Cuz factor.

Would never wish injuries upon a player, but you couldn't help but feel we made the right move after the hammy went twang.

Squizz I'd have to disagree that the extra Richmond memberships accrued on the back of Cousins is the saving grace here. If we drafted him I would have wanted him to make an on field contribution, not simply off field.

Interesting that Luke Darcy apparently posed a question in his interview with Cousins about how he felt when the Saints rejected him and he was not impressed at all.

Of course, but from what I saw he was going to be a good contributor this year. Is capable of playing for some time with his fitness (freak runner).

If Richmond had of taken the conservative route and iced him, no-one would have said it was a failed experiment. We've made the same mistake with Ball, X, Goose and even Harvs before (allowing them to play on and risk further damage).

Yes but I question if he was going to be able to be a good contributor. The talk was of his hamstrings having some issues and even if he was put on ice, there's still tightness, cramp, etc there which suggests that the hammies are struggling. Perhaps a 50% game time approach for the first 3-4 rounds might have helped here, who knows, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I guess if we had of ended up drafting him, I would have liked a plan to be in place in terms of how he was managed. Unfortunately I can't see him being back for at least a month, which is very disappointing and the cautious approach that will now be adhered to may be too late.

IIRC at the time he was shattered? not the brightest of questions from Darcy there, one people want to know about but not the brightest.

Oh yes, I feel vindicated - I am really proud that we did not take a player who pulled a hammy.

But I am also furious that we drafted Goddard, Hayes, Hudghton, Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Ball, Gram and others - we should have known they will be injured at some stage !

Seriously, what a silly thread !

We had the chance to get one of (if not the) best players of this decade. The club decided not to get him. We have to accept that. So what is the point in bringing this up again ? He plays for Richmond and was very impressive in the first half and should not have been back on the field after obviously feeling tight at 3/4 time (especially as the Tigers were down by about 10 goals at that stage anyway). I hope he is back soon - I thought it was great to see such a brilliant footballer on the field again.

If he comes back with 40 disposals and five goals against us, will you ask for our board, coach and sponsors to be sacked ?

That is slightly unfair. We are more cautious with our players than Richmond, and there's a decent chance Cousins wouldn't have fronted up round one for us if conditioning staff thought this would happen

Tis just after all the stick copped regarding cousins and us not drafting him I feel vindicated that we didn't get someone who has obvious health concerns regarding his physical condition (and apparently 6 hamstrings going in the last 2 years - source 3AW)

Not sure if vindicated is quite the right word but I'm feeling a bit more comfortable about our decision to overlook him.

Up until last night I still thought we'd missed a golden opportunity to recruit a quality player who could have pushed us back into premiership contention. Cousins seemed to have done everything right on and off the field too and looked set to have a big impact this year. He may still have an impact but there has to be serious question marks about his fitness now. Even before he did his hammy he looked to be struggling to have the same impact he had at West Coast.

Anyway as far as I'm aware the main reason we knocked Cousins back was more to do with the potential distractions he may cause the club and concerns about his off field activities and associates, rather than any issues with his fitness. So far though, he appears to have kept on the straight and narrow at Richmond and has only had a positive impact on their club in terms of hype, memberships etc.

Whether or not Cousins can still have an impact on the field remains to be seen but I don't think Richmond will be regretting their decision to recruit him just yet.

I am sure we would have handled ben totally differently so it's a little hard to judge (possibly not even playing him first up).

He did look good in the first half.

Sure would have loved a sold out MCG Rd 1 as well, although still think we made the right decision.

I suppose it was inevitable that this thread was going to be started after his first game. The only question was whether it would come from the supporters or critics of his possible recruitment.

I'd like to think that if any of our players goes off the ground at such a late stage with a tight hamstring whilst trailing by 70 odd points that he wouldn't be sent straight back on. I would be livid if I was a Richmond supporter (or Ben Cousins himself) to be honest.

I agree that we need to move on though. The decision was made months ago. Let's hope the young players we selected in place of him can go on to have long and successful careers.

Ben Cousins output in 3/4s last night >>>>> than our number 32's output over the next 4 rounds.

We would not have sent him back out unless the game was up for grabs.

Silly thread but as Sainter said inevitable

Silly,silly comments!
This was never about him just being a brilliant footballer.....we all know that is the case.
As I mentioned in another thread the decision was about the whole package NOT just the drug issue and I for one am proud that the Saints made the hard decision in rejecting Cousins when the easy thing to do was to bow to supporter/public opinion and go with him.
It was interesting this morning listening to SEN who spoke to Kim Hagdorn a journalist from WA.

I had heard that Collingwood had found out that Cousins had been having issues with his body (hamstrings) but what Hagdorn added was that Cousins was starting to impose conditions on his drafting to StKilda like not liking too many attend team meetings and he also said that he was upping the ante as regards money and essentially treating StKilda like a done deal.
I too wanted Cousins at StKilda as a footballer but surely the club now deserves credit for making the hard call.
It is also interesting that everyone is saying that Richmond had nothing to lose by drafting Cousins. The money & m/ship increase aside which has been fantastic surely Richmond as a club would be better off without the additional pressure caused by the Cousins saga on Friday night.
They have gone from boom to bust in one night and I doubt they will recover especially with games against the Cats & the Dogs in the next 2 weeks............zero & 3, no Cousins, medical staff under the pump, Wallace under the pump basically stuffed.

Oh no, I'm not getting into another discussion whether or not it was a good decision to not draft Cousins and what reasons the club may have had - that would be .... silly !

The issue was the doco. He is not playing footy for the sake of playing footy. He is playing footy for the sake of selling his little film.
There might be something in what you say.
As I mentioned previously Cousins apparently was trying to screw Stkilda for more money and Caroline Wilson alluded to the fact in her article that he is short of cash so maybe his motives are more financial than anything else.
I guess he has had no training or exposure to anything else to earn a living.

they were getting pumped so why not put him on ice?

As we all know Benny's on enough ice as it is:D

In all seriousness though, i still reckon we should've taken him. If he didn't get injured imagine the pressure it takes off Lenny, Bally and Dal etc. Plus just having him in the side would be pretty inspirational i would've thought.
