Weapons haul found before outback grand final
September 13, 2005 - 11:52AM

Hatchets and tomahawks were among more than 150 weapons found at an Alice Springs oval ahead of an Australian Rules grand final, police said.

Police found the weapons around Traeger Park before Sunday's Country Cup final between Yuendumu and Central Anmatjere.

Police searched for the weapons after a tip-off that rival families from Yuendumu had hidden the weapons.

Knives, tomahawks, a baseball bat, screwdrivers and hatchets were among weapons found by police, a spokesman said.

Police deployed extra officers and security staff and reported no incidents during the game, won in extra time by Yuendumu.

Exactly. What a disappointment that AFL is involved with such despicable violence at the grassroots level. It highlights the need for cultural change. Where else have you heard about attempted testicle consumption in sport?

Good point.

Cultural change can take a long time to occur though and testicle consumption sounds disgusting, but it possible might happen in Europe because soccer thugs will do absolutely anything to cause harm to an individual or group of indviduals.

Europe and the soccer is damn bad. But to see evidence like this and some recent past disgraces associated with the AFL shows everything ain't rosy...does the media sweeping all this under the carpet generally assist in the perpetuation of these problems?

No, it doesn't.

Despite working in the media, but not in football think that the pushing under the carpet means problems assocaited with behaviour have been ignored rather than the police and community groups doing something about it.

The soccer has so much violence because half the time they sit though a 0-0 draw. It must be Infuriating, this of cause is no excuse for violence. Differnet culturals also may clash. This is just one unfortunate event though at an football match, most of the time football of the AFL variety is played in good spirits and such violence is usally unheard. However we do not want to see this blight our game and anyone caught using violence should be dealt with harshly.

Hear hear.

Take note AFL. Clean up your act.

It wasn't actually the AFL, but rather one of the leagues up in the Northern Territory.

However, the AFL needs to work with AFL NT in order to change the culture and eliminate such behaviour from football in general.
