first crack at this. Here goes:

1 Melbourne - Tom Scully
Scully or Trengove; Trengove or Scully. Academic and largely ceremonial argument. Both tick all the boxes, would go high in any draft. No such thing as a sure bet, but these two are close to it. Scully first cos he's a local, good leader, great lateral movement, good athlete, etc

2 Melbourne - Jack Trengove
Slightly bigger body than Scully, great decision maker, courageous and innate ability to spot up tagets. Ripped up SANFL finals. Bailey needs to rejuvenate the midfield, and these two are no brainers.

3 Richmond - John Butcher
Surprise maybe, but Tigers got rid of a swag of talls recently, and need help for Riewold, Vickery, etc. Pack marking ball magnet, quick and clean below knees. Arguably best KPP (with Talia) and only two assured of being first round picks. Coach needs to upgrade across the field, so may as well start with the spine. In a team like Richmond, he may almost be a starter from the get go next year.

4 Fremantle - Ben Cunnington
Harvey needs to make his stamp on the club. Cunno's a hard nosed type in Harvey's image. Will terrorise other sides when he bulks up. Clean hands and an extractor - and as they've lost Carr last year and now Bell, need in-and-unders to support Palmer, Hill, etc.

6 Kangaroos - Dustin Martin
Good size, AA mid with great two sided kicking skills, and can play inside and out. With Simpson and Harris gone, Swallow and Ziebell need help. Scott will like this guy, whose disposal will help Petrie and other slook a heap better. Roos footskills have been shoddy for some time now. Need to consider life AB (After Bomer).

7 Sydney - Gary Rohan
Swans not so badly off for talls (Mumford, Seaby, Orrela, Pyke, White, LRT, Bolton, Tadgh, Grundy, Johnstone, Goodes and maybe Bradshaw) and need a replacement fpr Micky O. Enter Ranga Rohan - speed to burn, great leap and mark, super kick, great defensive pressure which Roos would love. Will fill a midfield role eventually when he bulks up.

8 Port Adelaide - Daniel Talia.
Need a tall and p***ed Butcher is gone. Too many ifs-and-maybe's about Panos, and Talia cut his teeth as a forward befor circumstance saw him play the Nationals in defence where he got AA. Could do a Cornes/Goodes/Waite type role in midfield when he bulks up. Bit of mongrel (like Trengrove from last season) to help overcome Port's downhill skiers tag. Nathan Bock type calmness and cleanness about his ball gathering and disposal.

Next 9 coming up.

I don't mind your logic about Butcher at 3 but I can't see Morabito not going in the top 7. If Freo don't grab him surely WC would though if he slid to us I would be doing cartwheels (and I can't do cartwheels). Also if Butcher is gone I believe Port will go the 2 best mids available and by your draft that would be Morabito and Lucas. Looking forward to your next thread.

10 Port Adelaide - Jake Melksham
I see him going early to mid teens, but he won't be around for pick 16 so Port will take a )small) chance that he bulks up and is almost in the Scully/Tregove leauge someday. Quick, good leap and wicked kick either foot with surprising depth. Played wing at Carnival and struggled, but was a star when back in the guts during TAC finals. He's an extractor, not one who tackles hard or terrorises opponents, but he gets the agate and is super evasive in traffic.

11 Essendon - Kane Lucas
Goes here because he shouldn't slip lower!!! Good size, has endurance, reasonable speed, versatility (plays half back, wing, lead up forward) and give Dons something they lack. They have a swag of wuick lightweights who kick well over short to mid distances, and in and unders like Watson - but Lucas is a bit different.

12 Carlton - Aaron Black
May be too early for him, but I think Carlton need another verstile and athletic tall with Waite's knee subject to scrutiny. Got plenty of ruckmen, a few like Kreuzer and Hampson who could also play KPP, but this guy could play KPP, flank or Goodes type midfield roles. Sticky basketball hands and a bit like Tarrant so could play anywhere.

13 Adelaide - Koby Stevens
Craig's gameplan is boring but damn it's effective. Stevens will suit the rigid adherence to structure, discipline, order and selflessness that Craig demands, and with Sloane wil make life tough for other opponents. Complements the Crows style to a tee, and has good size so could be up for game time in year one.

14 Sydney - Luke Tapscott
Has been mentioned from pick 5 to high twenties, and I think this is about his right spot. One trick pony like a smaller and not quite as good version of Daniel Rich. but Roos has always taken players with supposedly little upside or only a few boxes ticked, and made them essential team players. Will roost the ball from centre to the goal square on the small SCG and has the body size to make an immediate impact.

15 Bulldogs - Troy Taylor
Along with Geelong is the only side who can afford to take a punt in Round 1 with a left field pick. Taylor may be the type to give them the impetus to go one further and make a GF. Has X-factor and will be hard to matvh up on with his marking and solid kicking for goal. Motlopesque style tha give Dogs a new skillset.

16 Port Adelaid - Brad Shepherd
Took Melksham a few spots earlier, and will be happy to take this guy a few spots later than they would have expected. Will do Choco's quarterback role and allow Hartleet, Krakouer and Salpoek to move into the midfield where they belong. Reads play well and gets in front of his opponent, then has accelaration and kicking skills to run the line and hurt you. Courageous in the air and hard at the body on the ground - another tough type.

17 Geelong - Callum Bartlett
But for his knee, he may have been a top 6 pick. Jury out on how he recovers, but Cats can afford to take a risk, as they showed with S Motlop last year. Will give speed, strength and a diabolically good kick and will learn from the masters in Ling, Selwood, Ablett, Chapman, etc etc etc.

and yes,,,,,,,,,

you picked my deliberate mistake. I did miss out before....

West Coast - Anthony Morabito
Because he is too good to drop further. Great size, endurance, runs the lines and kicks a mean long ball too. Local boy so no go home factor here. May need a kick up the rectum to get him going, but a good replacement eventually for Staker. Played seniors in the WAFL ok so no worries there.

A lot of talls that Melbourne, Bulldogs, Richmond and Geelong can pick in Rounds 2 and 3 plus I expect Ball, McDonald and Harris to go by the end of Round 3 also.

Most clubs to make unspectacular decisions rather than punt on roughies ala McMillan-Pittard, etc in Round 1 exept for the two clubs I mentioned. They will generally avoid all but the elite KPP's and pick "solid citizens" rather than waste a pick in a shallow draft that may not come to fruition. Jetta I tried hard to fit into Round 1, but just struggled to find a niche for him. Expect Freo at pick 20 to pounce here.:D

I enjoyed it but mate expect some flack over Morabito and can I ask why you wouldn't at least want him at pick 16 even?!?!?!

I suspect Morabito went at pick 8. GGA facetiously gave Port pick 8 instead of West Coast. Hope that happens on draft day;)

um you screwed up with the order you went 8 with port to 10 at port then essendon at 11. skipped 9. Also you missed melbourne who have the pick after essendon
