It's nothing new in sports broadcasting really, and came to the fore in Australia in 2013 when the NRL started using it instead of painted on-field advertising.
I think the NRL do it really well, basically using it to replace the painted ads and not having images jumping out of the field and moving around and such.
With the AFL adding more on-field advertising this year should they move to this as well? Leave the logo on the broadcast wing and then the main Toyota ad, an ad in each forward 50 and maybe an ad between the square and the 50 one on the far side and on on the near side (near the corners of the square). Possibly even a logo inside the 50 for the "down the ground" shot.
Given the markings on-field aren't usually very legible to those at the ground due to them being positioned for the main cameras and stretched to create "normal" proportions, this provides a cleaner and neater presentation of the playing field for those at the ground. It also means if sponsors change their branding the old logo isn't underneath, and also opens the possibility of allowing home clubs a set of sponsor logos each as well. Also a possibility for cricket so that the logos at both ends of the pitch are legible to the camera behind the bowler.
It could also lead to different logos on the at-ground replay screens compared to on TV, or different markets (especially for the Grand Final with its larger international audience).
