Actually pretty neutral
It's nothing new in sports broadcasting really, and came to the fore in Australia in 2013 when the NRL started using it instead of painted on-field advertising.
I think the NRL do it really well, basically using it to replace the painted ads and not having images jumping out of the field and moving around and such.

With the AFL adding more on-field advertising this year should they move to this as well? Leave the logo on the broadcast wing and then the main Toyota ad, an ad in each forward 50 and maybe an ad between the square and the 50 one on the far side and on on the near side (near the corners of the square). Possibly even a logo inside the 50 for the "down the ground" shot.

Given the markings on-field aren't usually very legible to those at the ground due to them being positioned for the main cameras and stretched to create "normal" proportions, this provides a cleaner and neater presentation of the playing field for those at the ground. It also means if sponsors change their branding the old logo isn't underneath, and also opens the possibility of allowing home clubs a set of sponsor logos each as well. Also a possibility for cricket so that the logos at both ends of the pitch are legible to the camera behind the bowler.

It could also lead to different logos on the at-ground replay screens compared to on TV, or different markets (especially for the Grand Final with its larger international audience).

I would hate it. I don't know why anyone is advocating MORE advertising, the ones on the 50 and in the goal square are bad enough.
I feel it's only a matter of time.
If it happens, at least this way it leaves a clean ground for those watching at the venue. Also means the ones that are there, are properly visible, unlike the upside-down Telstra logo on the RHS 50m arc etc.

Not surprisingly it never took off after our last game at Vic Park in '99, the spinning beer cans and flashing mitsubishi logos are something to behold

That's pretty cool, and way ahead of its time. I'm sure if they did it now they could do it a lot better. And we'd see it a lot more because the cameras now are much further away.
That's the kind of stuff I'd rather NOT see haha. Hate it even between overs in the BBL.
Keep it simple like the NRL have = winning. Less is more.

Never thought I'd see someone on here suggesting we should have more on-field advertising in the AFL. I've sort of gotten used to the new logos this year, but any more would be way over the top and distract far too much from the actual game itself IMO. I'd have no particular issues if they decided to change the current ones bring in digital though - its still going to be there regardless.

From memory it was talked up as a first of some kind (Australia?, AFL?) at the time. Vic Park wasn't the best ground for cameras either.

Terrible thread. I'd be quite disappointing if it happened. This years new additions were annoying to start with but at the end of the day they're not too intrusive so it's okay. Anything more would be overkill and start to look a little tacky. If you look at the other biggest national football league in the world (NFL) they keep it really simple and don't even have advertising on jerseys. I'd be looking to copy that as much as possible rather than struggling sports like the NRL.

Just to clarify, is the thread itself terrible or some of my thoughts on what could happen in the future? Or is it just your opinion that we should have stuck with last year's level of advertising? Like, bringing the topic up for discussion isn't terrible I wouldn't have thought?

Personally I think logos painted on the field look tacky, especially when they're not on the right angle or size for them to be legible (either from your seat on the ground, like the main logos, or on TV, like the Telstra logo on the 50) and thus if they were replaced with virtual logos you'd get a nice clean field plus maintain advertising income; that's a win-win for the visual presentation at the ground and the advertisers on the replay screens and televisions.

Lets be honest, the on-field logos are pretty much purely for TV, thats why they are put in prime camera view and painted to suit the camera perspective.

I don't get to go to the footy that often, but I was there just two days ago and can honestly say I didn't even notice any of the logos on the ground, and thats coming from someone who picks up on all the minutae of these things. The simple fact is that they're not for my benefit as a spectator at the ground. Having a "clean field" would have made exactly zero difference to my visual presentation experience.

I think the fact that the logos are there now will make the ground (or anything else used as a billboard) look empty if we were to remove them. I personally can't unsee them now, as I've grown up with advertising on uniforms and football grounds and now that we have that, there's no real alternative anymore.

This is true, however if the AFL wanted to increase the advertising then wouldn't doing it without turning the whole field into a canvas be the way to go

The AFL logo and Toyota ad I think would be the only ones anyone would 'miss' in that regard I reckon.

I've noticed this in Super Rugby too. I certainly think for the that particular competition, it would be interesting to see how much revenue could be gained by making the virtual ads appear different in each country for the same game.

Similar for something like the Ashes - sure Optus is awesome here but it's pretty small in the UK :P perhaps for the international feed they could have an "international home Test sponsor" of an Australian brand that is available in other regions.

is optus the ashes sponsor?

I'm expecting so, it's the natural progression to me. Under normal circumstances I'd anticipate an announcement in the next six weeks but who knows with the present climate!

The virtual ads have been around for 4-5 years on V8 Supercar coverage. At first they looked absolutely terrible, super pixelated, very obvious compared to the surroundings, and also way too many of them. Now there is fewer of them and they've done much better blending them in with the rest of the coverage. The worst part about them on racing coverages is that they often move with the camera accidently. I do remember a couple of years at Bathurst, there was an ad in the grass a little bit off the track, and one car spun into the space where the ads was, the ads got confused and all of a sudden the car disappeared behind the ad lol.

Edit: I do remember watching this on YouTube a while back an noticed quite a fair few ads all throughout the video. From around the same time as the Collingwood and Brisbane match.
