Dyson went missing once the heat was on. Disappointing again.

Davey had some cameo moments but really did stuff all.

If you talk about young players who really look like they are improving and showed it against the Premier side on the first game of the year, I'd say..

Hooker

Dempsey

Zaka

The Peel Thunder Colt...Reimers

Howlett looks the goods.

3 - Stanton
2 - Hooker
1 - Reimers

Reimers was excellent, just didn't get it enough whenever he had the ball something happened and his tackling was also a standout.

Gumbleton had a bad game but being his first match since his debut season that's to be expected.

Though Neagle had those brain fades and dropped some easy marks but he tackled and was within the play for the entire game, so that was a slight positive on a bad night.

Pears was good but had rusty disposal.

Hooker was pretty good, had the better of mooney all night, Mooney got a couple of easy goals from the fast break and turnovers though.

Dyson was probably the worst essendon player bar neagle and gumby.

Youd have to be involved in the game to have a bad one id say Thrust

Nowhere near enough Pears love by your lot. This guys a monty for AA CHB sometime in his career. Deadset gun

3 - Stanton (solid ball winning performance, demands the 3 votes)
2 - Zaharakis (livewire up forward, took some precious marks inside 50, kicked some goals)
1 - Welsh (tagged Ablett out of the game for the first two quarters, then was released in a more attacking role in the second half. 6 clearances)

Good to see Stanton finally getting some deserved love.

Looks like Prismal, Williams, Neagle (again) and Gumby will be coping the most s**t from Bomber fans this year.

Considering the injuries and lack of games they have had to contend againt I think our fans need to show more patience.

3) Stanton
2) Monfries
1) Dempsey

While Dempsey was poor at times, his efforts to run back and help out other defenders has been severely underrated. He saved at least 3 goals by my count. He also gave us a lot of run out of defence.

Surprise to see so many votes for Hooker; I said to my brother to watch for him, as I'm expecting big things, however I felt he hurt us way too often. Throughout the game he started 10-15m in front of Mooney, which he got away with some of the time. However it often meant somebody else (Dyson or Slatts at times) had to cover his man and leave their man open, costing us dearly. Eventually our defenders couldn't cover him, and Mooney got his cheap goals in the final quarter. He's going to be a good player, but gee he needs to work on his positioning. Amateur stuff.

Also, had the most idiotic Geelong supporter in front of me. He was screaming all game that the umpires were handing us the game, yet when blatant poor decisions (SJ's holding the ball, Scarlett's deliberate kick to the boundary, after Fletcher was pinged for far less) he started clapping. Had indirect comments with him all game, until I said "that's a horrible decision" to which he replied "it's beautiful, actually"; I said "you've never seen a game before, have you buddy?" He said nothing.

After the game, my brother said to me "man I wanted to punch that guy"; clearly I wasn't the only one. Absolute clown.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought Dempsey was good.

Geelong supporters are bandwagoners who have FA knowledge about the game. There were a few sitting near me that I would have liked to have decked.

Completely agree kelvin. I do not rate him at all. He is too slow and his supposed great skills are crap.
NO!, NO!, NO!, u are so wrong, he is cool underpressure and is extremely smart, you obviosly didnt watch the game properly, stanton was fantastic, zaharakis was really good, liked williams job on scarlett, getting him away from the backline.

3-stanton

I tend to agree with these three. Welsh had a purple patch when Watson was resting up forward which was good to see. Had a real influence, if he could preduce that 4 qtrs every week would give jobe a major chop out. Mcveigh coming back in for next week which will give us a big boost. Happy with how the midfield performed for most of the match.

Stanton really looked the goods out there, looks like he is ready to take his game to the next level. Also feel the same about Zaharakis, had a great game and has to be a certain lock in our 22. Also looks like he is ready to step it up.

Have to mention Pears and Hooker thier efforts for most of the night were very impressive. Pears looked like a veteran player out there at times with his poise and attack on the footy.

Also Hilles 150th and first game back since the reco was excellent, he has a huge presence. Heres hoping for his 08 form all year:D

Pretty pleased with the effort last night. Cant wait for round 2.

Why the flack for Prismall? He was good last night. Disposal was pretty good, decision making was fine, only problem was that shot on the run he missed. Was cursing him after that.

Hard to make out Welsh sometimes. I tend to think he's a momentum player, who much like McPhee, is a great defender when we're doing well with scoreboard pressure but struggles when the opposition forwards are getting on top. He's a phenomenal talent, and getting better, but I wonder if his mental toughness needs to come up a couple of notches....

3. Hille — When Hille was taking centre bounces, we got better then even chances at clearance. When Hille was rested, the Cats took it away. Hille also gave some presence in the forward line. The most influential Essendon player, daylight second.

2. Monfries — as he was last year, our best lead-up forward.

1. Fletcher — Mr Fixit.

For me, there are two problems with Stanton which reduce his effectiveness: too many bombs forward offering our forwards NO advantage; cannot run out a game. Is it fitness, inability to pace his effort, or an injury? I don't know what it is, but he couldn't catch his shadow in a last quarter.
