The 2013 WAFL season is likely to extend to 27 weeks and include three separate competitions as part of a deal to avoid AFL reserves teams being introduced to the State league.
The nine WAFL presidents have endorsed a proposal for all clubs to give up their AFL-listed players and to play regular matches against West Coast and Fremantle teams. But the Eagles and Dockers would not enter the WAFL premiership competition and instead would take part in a separate cup competition that would compete for a significant cash prize

So, do the AFL listed players get to play each week?

Surely, this is just a confirmation that the WAFL clubs are concerned that the two AFL reserves teams will be too strong for the comp, so why set up a separate comp?

Will take time to understand.

if there's no premiership at the end of it, why would the WAFL teams treat the games as seriously? And if they don't treat them seriously, where's the challenge for our kids to step up?

If players want to get the chance at the bigtime they will make a go of these game, with AFL listed players. Will Dockers and Eagles have a bunch of extra players who don't play either AFL ro WAFL to fill out the team. Dockers couldn't feild a side at the moment.

Reading the article in today's Worst which I expect is the same as the link in the OP I think the concept is good.
it wont be up and running until at least 2013 which will give another 12 months to dot the I's and cross the T's.

One thing is definate. Our Club should have complete control of the regime our players function under.
If it means not pleasing everyone but pleases our Club an the WAFL then I have no problems with it.

If you haven't read the article and just say you're against then you get yourself informed about what it's saying.

Yes. Just like Collingwood and Geelong VFL sides you have the AFL Listed players + a squad of players who aren't on the list.

What size that unlisted squad is I don't know. But I'd say a good 20-30 atleast.

I think we have 20 on our VFL list and they play for their nominated GFL clubs when they aren't needed by us.

In addition to which here we've got the system whereby every club can have a TAC Cup player who can play handful of games as a nominated 23rd player.

We rarely go close to running short on players, although admittedly it's a while since I can remember us having an injury crisis so that might change if we did.

I don't like the sound of this.

I can see WC & Freo reserves beating up on the WAFL sides and quality non-AFL listed players wanting to jump ship from their WAFL clubs to become WC & Freo 'squad players' to further their chances of being noticed by those in AFL ranks.

In theory yes, but if Freo had a reserves team this year, I don't think they would have been beating anyone up.

Grrrrrrrr, I still think both the WAFL and AFL teams are being pigheaded over this matter. The AFL clubs are still being "school yard bullies".

Freo's dealings with the Perth footy Club has not changed my view that the AFL clubs think their players are "above" WAFL performance standards. eg. must play League every week !!!!.

I still can't work out how this is going to work. Presumably there will be 1 WAFL team having a bye each week. They will play either the Freo reserves or the Eagles reserves on their bye. By my reckoning, that means our reserves get to play once per fortnight. That will be great for injury management, but surely that can't be good for player development.

I must be missing something. There's no chance Freo or the Eagles agreeing to that.

Yep this is what I was wondering also, having our reserves only playing fortnightly is shite.

Spot on.

The WAFL must remain a competitive and relevant comp, playing scratch matches (effectively what they are) - real risk.

I'd rather give AFL clubs a greater say where their players land, with additional points for those clubs that miss out.

I can only assume that there will be 3 sides having a bye from the WAFL each week ... with 2 sides playing Freo/WC and the other one having a proper bye. Every now and then they might have 1 side with a bye and get Freo/WC to play each other.

Interesting concept.

In the VFL there are two stand alone teams (without AFL listed players). Port Melbourne is one of these teams and finished the home and away season on top undefeated. On the other hand the two teams without an affiliate (Geelong and Collingwood) performed quite poorly winning 6 and 4 games respectively. So looking at this I don't think there is any reason to assume that the Fremantle or West Coast reserves teams would be too strong for the competition. These teams are going to be made up mostly of young kids who aren't yet ready for AFL football.

I think the main issue with the WAFL not wanting to have the Fremantle and West Coast teams enter the competition is due to the fact they won't have reserve or U/19 teams. This has been a major issue in the VFL with 3 of the sides not having reserves teams means that the reserves competition is often scheduled on different days and different locations to their senior teams. This has had an impact on crowd numbers as most people like to have a day at footy watching their clubs seniors, reserves (and 19's in the case of the WAFL).

We need a change ASAP.

Absolutely none of our players seem to develop at all in WAFL.
An none seem to play well enough to earn call ups to AFL.
Given that hardly any of the players playing WAFL most weeks from Freo dominate or look so much better than non AFL listed players there is no way the teams would dominate the competition.

Zac Clarke pretty much showed nothing in WAFL all year
Didnt seem to be developing at all.
Yet we finally got some AFL games he started to look much better an started to look like he was developing nicely.
Why doesnt that development happen in WAFL an then he plays so well earning a call up to AFL instead of just getting handed the opportunity due to injuries.

Same for Sibo some saw great signs in Sibo that he could really become a player.
Yet in WAFL he has pretty much done nothing all year an didnt look to be developing at all.
Finally gets handed an AFL game an looks to be a interesting prospect.
Yet judged on WAFL abilities many would send him to the scrap heap.

Why doesnt anyone develop in WAFL?
Why dont players go back their an kick ass demanding to be picked for Freo games.
