Intriguing weekend of matches coming up, starting with Sowfs v Perth tomorrow night and we'll see if my Swans can finally open their account at Joondalup, after some epic battles the past couple of years. Then we have East Perth in the Foxtel Cup. :thumbsu:

Bulldogs v Perth Fri night, 6:40pm, Freo Oval

It's only taken 2 weeks, but already Perth have baffled, confused and surprised me. D White has been omitted and named an emergency for the match. Are they trying to send him a message, or is it not Damon White, but Dene? Someone help me! :p:confused:

The Bulldogs, to my surprise, got off to a flyer in the season proper against the Royals. J Graham plays his 100th match, first as skipper, congrats to him. C Wilson and surprisingly (to many Eagles supporters) A Hams are named. Murphy named at CHB? Looks a good running side.

Perth, as usual, look a good, balanced side, but can they take the chocolates this time? At Freo Oval it's 99 53 in favour of the dogs. The demons side seems to have been turned upside down from last week, let's see if they spark up.

The teams:

Bulldogs
McGrath Head Hams
White Murphy Cooper
Cook Miller Dell-Olio
Wilson McCarrey North
Mugumbwa Bairstow McIntosh
F Graham Guglielmana Delmenico
Int Adams Bairstow Collica Winter
Emg Amato Borovac Wilkie

K-T O'Sullivan Bollenhagen
Armstrong Busher Rogers
Denton Kane Moody
F McDougall Young Elari
Int Young Florio Hodge Vidot
Emg White Billings Lang

Sharks v Lions, Sat 1:30 pm, East Freo Oval

This game starts at 1:30, so don't miss the bouncedown. The Sharks have a chance to keep their good start to the season going whilst the Lions can open their account and measure themselves against some good opposition.

The Sharks lose Kerr, but that's about it. Dodd plays his 50th game for the Sharks, well done. :thumbsu: This is a team full of runners, but lacking a little in taller timber. The forward line remains the issue for the Sharks, for mine, but they have some exciting talent in the running department. McGough, the captain, is back, with Houlihan, Dalziell, Monteath, Hadley, Stevens, O'Brien x 2, McNamara, Fasolo et al.

The Lions have Jack Anthony at CHF, who will want to prove his worth to Freo. Broadhurst leads the way, as usual, for Subi but hopefully he has more support. Cockie started the season well, Bristow back makes a big difference, but they will have their work cut out to keep pace with the Sharks midfield, either that or play keepings off by keeping the ball in the air.
Should be a very good match this one, Sharks at home, just.

Tigers v Thunder, Sat, Claremont Oval

No-one's seen much of Peel so far this year and they've suffered a couple of setbacks with Howlett aimed for their team but ending up at the Sharks, plus the O'Brien brothers and Chartres leaving. Claremont, well we all know where they're at. :)

Claremont lose Swift and deBoer to the AFL, rather mercifully for Peel some might think, but they have quality depth to step in behind. Richardson and Broome have started on fire up forward. With Weedon, Browne, Foster, Houlihan and co setting up a lot of chances, who wouldn't want to be a Tigers forward? In defence they have 4 of the 6 having been on AFL lists and look pretty strong back there.

Peel, well they're a group of youngsters and no names (not being rude people). Will the young players be better off after having been at the senior level for an extra year, doing that 1 more pre-season? We'll see I guess. Peel's hope probably rest rather heavily on the AFL listed players, Crichton, Jones, Lycett, Michie and Wilson. However, looking through their team, McFarlane and Butcher were highly rated juniors, the Thornton brothers back at Peel should bolster their stocks, Battye fit will be a huge bonus and, on a personal note, I hope young Mason is over his injury issues, he could be quite a good player.:thumbsu:

Don't think Peel will get close, but I may be surprised.

Falcons v Swans, Sat, Arena Joondalup

Falcons have looked good so far, pre-season and last week. Swans have been closeish, but need to lift their intensity and work rate, across the board, something the Falcons are generally renowned for.

The Falcons have quite a bit of exciting young talent, like Zanetti, Bewick, Black, Elisseou, Hutchings, Harvey and I've just realised Strijk is there as well. Damn you Worsfold, he often tears us apart. :( They're a good running side and probably lack a little in the height department.

Swans have gone tall again, is Worsfold coaching at Bassendean? 4 of the 6 forwards are talls, we've been lacking applying pressure in the critical parts of matches and we lose Coniglio. Lammie out must be a bonus though, as I see it, sorry. Davis is lucky to keep his spot, has been poor over the pre-season and in the first 2 matches. We'll see James against his old team so should add a bit of spice.

Critical game for the Swans and next week is the bye so they must win. I think they'll just get over the line. Or is that hope? :p

Cheers for the write up, no Claremont one though?

I didn't want to make a new thread for this question, so i'll ask it here.

Is there a WAFL merchandise store? My mate thinks there is but I think most stuff is just on-line or you buy it at the games.

Yeah as far as I know Claremont takes on Poil Funder toomorrow at Claremont oval.
I'm looking forward to walking down the road with my son to watch the game.
Hopefully it won't be another blowout like last year.

How are Peel looking this year?

It's still coming, little snowed under and stressed, must be Swans not winning, or something.:p

As far as I know, you buy the merchandise at the clubs. Claremont had a tent up near the claremont town goals end last week. Burley Sekem may sell some WAFL stuff and I've seen some WAFL shorts in one of the sports stores, but for about 10 years? there wasn't any place to buy but at the clubs. That's still the safest bet.

Looks like Dayle Garlett might make his league debut for Swan Districts this week.

Not knowing much about him i've done a little research.

He was born on the 9th of January, 1994 making him 17 years old.

He was an All Australian Under 15s player and state Under 16s representative.

He is the cousin of Carlton's Jeff Garlett.

In the Colts round 1 he had a game high disposal count of 27 plus 1 goal.
In the Colts round 2 he had the 2nd most disposals in his side (3rd in the game) with 25.

Damn straight! I like it a lot more than going to AFL games.
We have a great time chatting while the game is on and having a kick in the breaks.
Can't beat it.

Terrible terrible performance by Swans.

I could cop the first two rounds but this performance was weak.

Primarily the lack of respect to the opposition, mainly in the midfield allowed West Perth to run rampant.

Surely this is more a coaching issue then personnel. Losing Kraks doesn't cause this much havoc.

On the bright side, Dayle Garlett was a spark in his debut with 3 very good goals, 2 opportunistic.

Also, you could see the structures in place to allow Hansen, Geappen and Notte to operate without running into each other. The advantage of having Ash full time now.

Actually Underdog, I think it's a mental attitude issue. We seem lazy and not prepared to do the hard work that we did last year. Where I think the coach needs to step in is to drop certain players and make them work harder, kick them in the pants, not tell them they've been monsters like I witnessed at 3/4 time last week. No, I'm not dirty on them at the moment. :p

We actually look unfit atm & our last qtr fadeouts in all 3 games would confirm this. A few players need a rocket including Riggio (5 possesions in the midfield not good enough), Davis (tho admittedly better this week), Williams (was terrible on Mellington) & probably need more out of Hunter. Our ball movement out of the back half has been a shambles & Ames should never be allowed to kick in from a behind! Just poor decision making really. :( Dale Garlett was good in his 1st game, where is Clint Garlett atm & Simpson yesterday???

Well Claremont accounted for Peel yesterday pretty easily.
I kind of felt lke the Tiges weren't taking it very seriously, not as seriously as if they were playing Swans for example.
I sure hope we go in with all guns firing against East Perth next week. Can't afford to go into that one half cocked.
Peel were looking a lot better than I thought they would (from what I've been hearing). They moved the ball well across the field and put some very good play together, just didn't get the score on the ball.

As to Swans, well you guys were actually there, or watching the game, but I think West Perth are also a tougher proposition this year, they managed to get up against the Tiges pre-season, for what it's worth.
Perhaps it's just poor early season form cause I still rate them from what I've seen this year. Still a danger side.

Souths doing their best again to dominate for large patches of matches then blow it away by trying to do to much with the football. It's a very good squad that's going to cause John Dimmer to pull more of his hair out if they continue to blow 5 goal leads against bottom rung sides.

The pleasure of following South Freo!

What are you on about??? the biggest lead you had was 3 goals at about the 20 min mark of the last quarter, Perth had periods where they dominated the game as well, the facts are Sowfs are too old and too slow and i reckon Peel will give you are big scare this week if not win.

And by the way finishing 7th last year would put you in the bracket as a bottom rung side.

Well, you could both probably notch up wins against Swans, atm. :o Sorry dasler, was pleasantly surprised for Perth's sake, but I understand what you're saying about Souths. I also think Dees fans may well fall into that category. Although not having won a premiership, have had decent squads and win the games they aren't expected to but then lose the ones they are expected to win.
