Been hard to get myself motivated for this week, so I'll be brief.
One interesting change for the week was to have all 4 Colts games at Subi Oval on Saturday. That has now changed because Swans wanted to have all teams play at the same venue, on the same day, in support of Luke Adams' family. Thanks to the Royals and WAFL for accomodating this request from Swans. :thumbsu:

The Falcons and Bulldogs at the windy city is the pick of the games and Perth and Claremont shapes as another interesting match.

Royals v Swans

Both teams were widely tipped to be in the top 4 this year, and I know it's a long way to go, but to date neither has produced much to whet the supporters' appetite. The main question for me is how will Swans respond to the emotion that Luke Adams' hospitalisation has engendered.

The Royals still looked unbalanced to me last week and I tipped the Sharks to outrun them. They need to share the load between players and add more support to Sweet, Lee, Wulff. The other runners need to join in help break the shackles. Shepheard actually looks a likely customer in the ruck, Polak is a very good target forward and Pettifer has to be watched all the time or he can tear you apart. Wulff got blanketed last week, from the first quarter and the Royals lost their drive.

Swans have brought in one of my favourite colts from last year, Faulks, Adam Faulkner. His first job looks to be on anouther bright young prospect, Delborello, should be a good battle. Coniglio is also welcomed back, a BIG welcome, I suspect. :p Still a couple of Swans lucky to be in the league side, hopefully they are on last warnings and must perform.
Heart says Swans, just, head is all over the place so don't know. :)

Sharks v Thunder

Another couple of teams that have been struggling, although the Sharks, on paper, don't look like they should have. Peel's coach said before last week's game they needed to draw a line in the sand and they did, they now need to back it up each week. Plus it's the O'Briens up against their old side and there may be some emotional venting required. Definitely a danger game for the Sharks.

The Sharks were 5 goals down at quarter time against the Royals, but Malxos told them not too panic, there was plenty of time to get back into it, as long as they started now. They did and they have a very good running side. Their defence held up very well against a potentially potent Royals attack.

The Thunder match up well against the Sharks, in terms of running ability. The Jones', Thorntons', Butcher, Crichton, Michie, Healey will need to delve into their running wells though, to keep up with the Sharks. Lycett and Williams against Griffin will be an interesting battle and pivotal to the match.
Sharks by a few goals.

Demons v Tigers

Well, I thought ho hum about this game until I saw the outs for the Tigers. Foster and Derrickx, plus one of Weedon or Swift, I expect, will make this a bit tougher assignment. Lee to ruck against McDougall should see the centre square advantage go to the Dees.

The Dees were in red hot form, beating a couple of big improvers in the Dogs and Lions, before crashing back to earth against Swans. Then the bye, so now they have to get themselves ready for the ladder leading Tigers. I think McDougall should give them an advantage in the middle, whilst Foster and Swift/Weedon out will further even up the midfield stakes. Seamus Young still out might hurt and I'm looking forward to Sibosado going to CHF to see if he can stretch the defence of his old side.

The Tigers came up against a very good opponent, who matched them in the running department and were probably a bit tougher over the ball. Defensive run has been the key against the Tigers the past couple of years, it still is. Whilst the outs are a damaging list of outs, the ins aren't bad either. Browne, Orzel, Rowe, Anderson (I rated very highly towards the end of last year) and Andrews - the ruck.
Should be an entertaining match, the problem for the dees is the tigers were beaten last week, so sneaking up on them won't happen. Tigers by 4-5 goals.

Falcons v Bulldogs

The Falcons remain the only undefeated side and they come up against the Bulldogs, who are snapping at their heels. The Falcons are tough to beat up at the Arena, fine, warm day should be great viewing with a large crowd.

The Falcons run, run, run and hard. LeCras had a ripping game last week with 35 touches and Zanetti and Mellingotn have been bright up forward, so they've got a good mixture. Strijk and Tsalikis are tough to match up on and I reckon it might be Slick's turn to turn it on, as I haven't heard much about him this year. Hutchings has been the pick up of the year, for mine, and I must say I expected him to be as well. Rated him as a 16 yo debuting for the Royals, still rate him.

The Bulldogs lose Jaymie Graham to that horrific leg injury, hopefully he get's well soon. They gain Gaff, who is an impressive runner and will be interesting to see what he does in a full WAFL match, will be a big test, IMO. Collica was a livewire last week, hopefully he can continue his form. Murphy leading the ruck, is that how thin the rucking stocks are down at Freo Oval?
Falcons comfortably now I've seen that.

Wulff got blanketed last week, from the first quarter and the Royals lost their drive.

Wouldn't expect too much from him for a while, really shouldn't be playing at all. Has three cracked ribs and bruised lungs from very early in the season.

I hope the Swans do it for Luke. Best of luck there guys.

I also hope Claremont are a bit more switched on than last week.

Went to the game at Lathlain today.

Claremont came away easy winners in the end which must have been dissapointing for the Redlegs faithful as it was the 500th game played there today.
The first quarter was pretty even, a standard 1st between any two league teams really, seemed Perth were determined to stay close all day.
Then about midway through the 2nd qtr Perth just went to sleep and at the same time Claremont picked up a notch and piled on a stack of goals.

Claremont opened the third qtr with a quick one or two from memory and then Perth put the clamps on and prevented Claremont from scoring any more goals for the rest of the quarter. They didn't score either but I still found it an impressive effort.
(actually just looking at the scores we kicked four in the third)

The last quarter was more of the same but Claremont managed to put on a few more goals to get out to quite a substantial lead.

Perth were really good in patches today. They carried the ball well and took advantage of Claremonts main weakness, defence on the counter attack. But I guess they just didn't do enough of the good things or sustain their efforts for long enough. They have some good players there though and if they get their four quarters together they will be dangerous.

The cardies were pretty clinical today. Deserved to win the game by perhaps a bit more. The thing ive noticed this year about the falcons is the tackiling intensity.

The only way I can see a side knocking them over is by superior hand and foot skills, too often SF played the handball happy game today with no effect. WP were always on the heals and the first sign of a poor disposal had strijk lecras or hutchings delivering to the forwardline.

I think after last week there is a bit of belief in the squad that they are a good side that are a big chance this year, I expect they will now set about putting away the bottom 5 sides a lot earlier in the match rather than allowing for the 3rd and 4th quarter superior run to get them through the match.

Ps. If anyone gets the chance, go listen to Kevin Caton speak to the WP forwards at 1/4 and 3/4 time. Brilliant

Went to the Claremont game today (finally!)

Good to get a strong win. Agree that we have some weakness on the counter attack. Loved seeing Jones do well, thought that Sibosado was quite poor on him though. Jones is an amazingly accurate kick. Broome didn't really tear it up like I hoped he would. Nice to see Handley get a few goals, missed a pretty easy one from just outside the square but took some nice marks, same with Richo.

Still had a bundle of players out but did well.
