Round 17 produced a few good contests with a couple of games going right down to the wire. In the end, most of the favourites won with scores of three and four scattered across the group. However, hansie bucked the trend and boldly tipped Swan Districts in their game against West Coast Eagles which paid off to give hansie a perfect round this week. The bonus point for Round 17 was shared with Kram securing his second straight bonus point this week alongside Westozbb with both tipsters selecting a margin of 51 points handing them both five points for the round.

With 17 rounds complete, Miguel Sanchez remains in the lead (despite forgetting to tip) on 55 points but his lead has been cut to two with Monocle and now Kram tied for second place on 53 points. Tied for fourth place are Freofalcon and gaskin on 52 points.

Round 18 Fixtures

Claremont vs West Perth at Claremont Oval (2:15pm, margin)
Perth vs West Coast Eagles at Mineral Resources Park (2:15pm)
South Fremantle vs Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval (2:15pm)
Subiaco vs Swan Districts at Leederville Oval (2:15pm)
East Fremantle vs East Perth at New Choice Homes Park (2:15pm)

Round 18 is approaching as we head towards the business end of the home and way rounds. There's a full allotment of games this week with all five set to take place on Saturday afternoon at 2:15pm.

Perth host West Coast Eagles at Mineral Resources Park in a battle of the Lathlain co-tenants. The Demons didn't fare too well on Thursday Night, losing to Subiaco quite comprehensively while the Eagles had a shock loss to Swan Districts which has hurt their finals hopes. Perth could potentially secure a finals berth with a win and if other results fall their way while the Eagles must win to stay in contention for the top five. This is a clash with big ramifications for either club and neither side will want to lose this one. South Fremantle take on Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in another game which will have a big impact on the top five. Souths remain in the hunt for a top two spot and need to keep winning to maintain pressure on Claremont who currently occupy second place. The Bulldogs have found their groove in the last couple of weeks with back-to-back wins and they'll be looking to make it three in a row this week. Peel Thunder fell just short against Claremont in Round 17 after leading for most of the day and will be bitterly disappointed after a strong effort all afternoon. This match is really a must win for the Thunder as a loss will make a top five berth much harder to reach with less than a handful of games left in the season.

Subiaco and Swan Districts will do battle at Leederville Oval with both clubs entering the match having had wins last week. Subiaco got the job done over Perth in prime time last Thursday Night while Swan Districts produced an upset to defeat West Coast Eagles in a thriller last Saturday. Subiaco can secure top spot this week with victory and being back at Leederville Oval will be keen to produce a strong effort in front of their home crowd. Swans enter the match with some confidence and a win for them could possibly get them off the bottom of the ladder, something they'll be keen to avoid. The final game this week has East Fremantle playing against East Perth at New Choice Homes Park with both teams playing for pride for the rest of the season. East Fremantle pushed West Perth for a half last week but a goalless third quarter proved costly and they'll want to atone for that this week at Shark Park. East Perth lead at half time against South Fremantle last week but a scoreless third quarter cost them dearly as the Bulldogs kicked eight goals to completely turn the game around. The Royals have played well at times this season and the future looks bright with this game representing another chance to grab a win and finish the season on a high note.

Unfortunately there is no TV game week so I've selected the Claremont vs West Perth fixture as the margin match with this game being the Match of the Round. Claremont did things the hard way on Saturday, trailing Peel Thunder for the majority of the game down in Mandurah before eventually prevailing in a nailbiter by two points, the second successive game they've had to come from behind to claim victory. The Tigers will be weary of West Perth with the Falcons much improved from their clash in Round Two earlier this season and also coming into the game with a two game winning streak. West Perth also had to come from behind to win last week, defeating East Fremantle and pushing themselves into fourth position on the ladder. Victory this week and some results falling their way would see the Falcons secure a finals berth, something which didn't look too likely having lost their opening four games of the season.

In the other grades this week there isn't isn't too much change with all matches for the Colts and Reserves to begin at 9am and 11:30am respectively. The only exception to this is the Colts' game between Subiaco and Swan Districts which will be played at 6:30pm in Kalgoorlie.

The weather this week is looking good with a mostly sunny day and a maximum of 20 degrees expected on Saturday at this stage If you're around for the early games, the morning is going to be a little cool with a minimum of seven degrees so you'll need some warmer gear for early part of the day.

Three games to go and we're now into the final part of the home and away rounds. There's a lot to play for this week with some big games set to shape the top five with various teams jostling for positions. With some good weather forecast for the weekend, hopefully we'll see some great contests and five really good games on Saturday. Happy tipping!! :thumbsu:

I can understand the wafl trying new things but a Thursday night game in winter? Late night shopping.

It ended up being the highest attended game of the round. I can see your point though, certainly a bit unorthodox and would perhaps be a bit more suited later in the month or earlier in the season.

With the AFL having another bye round before finals this year, it would make sense to have one game in the first week of the finals in prime time but I can't say I'm confident of it happening.
