Hi all, the match between Subiaco and West Coast Eagles has been moved to East Fremantle Oval (New Choices Homes Park) after Leederville Oval was again declared unfit for use this week due to the state of the ground. I've amended my post on the previous page to reflect this.

Round 16 proved to be a fairly straightforward round to pick with most tipsters getting two correct with just the two games played on Saturday. The bonus point was claimed by Kram this week whose margin of 28 points was closest to West Perth's winning margin of 36 points and that handed Kram a score of three for the round.

With 16 rounds completed, there's a five way tie for first place with andana, AsterixTheGaul, getgaff, Kram and Monocle all on 51 points.

Round 17 Fixtures

Subiaco vs East Perth at Leederville Oval (2:10pm)
Perth vs Claremont at Mineral Resources Park (2:10pm)
Peel Thunder vs South Fremantle at Lane Group Stadium (2:10pm, margin)
Swan Districts vs West Coast Eagles at Steel Blue Oval (2:10pm)
Bye: East Fremantle, West Perth

Round 17 is approaching and is also the last of the bye rounds for the season. There's four games this week, all on Saturday afternoon at 2:10pm.

The battle of the Leederville Oval co-tenants is the first game of Round 17 with Subiaco playing host to East Perth on Saturday. Subiaco are only one of two sides playing this week who played in Round 16 and they had a match up against West Coast Eagles which was moved to New Choices Homes Park after Leederville Oval was again deemed unfit for play on the weekend. The Lions had the better of the two sides early with 3.3 to 2.0 in the first quarter before six second term goals while holding the Eagles goalless gave Subiaco a 44 point lead at half time which became 50 points early in the third term after Harry Marsh kicked the first goal of the quarter. The Eagles rallied however, kicking the next three goals in the third quarter before booting another four in the last quarter to match Subiaco's four in the last quarter also as the Lions eventually came away with a 23 point victory. East Perth had the bye last week but faced Peel Thunder in Round 15, a match that was also supposed to be at Leederville Oval but was moved to New Choice Homes Park due to the state of the surface at Leederville. The Royals had little answers for Peel Thunder throughout the day as the Thunder took control of the contest in the first quarter, kicking four goals to two while kicking three goals in each of the next three terms while holding the Royals to just six goals overall to claim a strong 53 point win. Both clubs will be fighting to keep their seasons going in this one and will stay in the race mathematically with victory in this game on Saturday.

Next up has Perth taking on Claremont at Mineral Resources Park. Perth last played in Round 15 after having the bye last week and were thoroughly outplayed by the Sharks who coasted to a 96 point win at the WACA. The Demons managed nine goals for the day in reasonable conditions but Old Easts booted 23, including 10 goals in the first half and then a further seven in the third term to put the contest to bed before cruising home in the last term with another six for a significant percentage boost. Perth will be hoping to turn things around this week as they tackle Claremont who also had the bye in Round 16 but hosted Swan Districts in Round 15 at Revo Fitness Stadium. The Tigers had the better of Swans early but were wasteful in front of goal with 3.5 with a further three goals in the second term handing the Tigers a comfortable 24 point lead at the main break. Both Claremont and Swan Districts booted 2.2 in the third term to again leave the margin at four goals going into the last term. Swans turned it on in the final stanza though with two goals chopping the margin back to nine points at the 13 minute mark to bring themselves right into contention for the win. Claremont then steadied with a goal to Lawrence Evans several minutes later to gain back control which proved to be enough despite a late Swans goal to win the game by nine points. The Tigers currently sit third and could sit in second spot with victory on Saturday so there is plenty to play for in terms of their ladder position this week.

The final game of Round 17 has Swan Districts facing West Coast Eagles at Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean. Swan Districts had a bye last week but took on Claremont in the previous round and gave them a run for their money after a slow start saw them down by four goals both at half time and three quarter time. The Black Ducks rallied in the last with two majors giving them a sniff of victory but a goal at the 21 minute mark to Claremont snuffed out their run in what was an eventual nine point defeat, a loss which saw them slip outside of the top five into sixth place. Swans' opponent in Round 17 is the West Coast Eagles' WAFL side who locked horns with Subiaco in Round 16. The Eagles had a poor start, trailing by 50 points early in the third term before turning things around in the second half with some good performances in general play which yielded three goals in the third stanza before four goals in the last added some respectability to the scoreboard as they eventually went down by 23 points. Swans go into this game trailing Peel Thunder on percentage so will be aiming to win to hopefully break back into the top five while the Eagles will be buoyed by their second half against the Lions and will be trying to score a second victory to help them get off the bottom of the ladder.

The TV game this week sees Peel Thunder host South Fremantle down at Lane Group Stadium in Mandurah. Peel Thunder had the bye in Round 16 but battled East Perth at New Choices Homes Park in the previous round. The Thunder controlled the match from the outset with four goals to two in the opening quarter before nine goals to four in the remainder of the match saw the Mandurah based side take out a comfortable 53 point victory and push themselves back back into the top five with four games to play. Souths meanwhile played host to West Perth in Round 15 after also having a bye last week. The match, while relatively low scoring was one of the best games of the season and the best for some time with both sides having momentum at times during the game. Souths had a one point lead at half time before West Perth kicked two goals to one to take a 10 point lead at half time. The Bulldogs swung the match again with three goals of their own to West Perth's two to cut the lead to just two points at the final break. The last term was a classic, the Falcons kicked truly early to take an important seven point lead early in the term but the Dogs kicked the next two to take back the lead only for West Perth to hold a one point lead at the 23 minute mark courtesy of an Aidan Lynch goal. South Fremantle's captain Dylan Main kicked a brilliant running banana goal at the 25 and a half minute mark to hand the Dogs a six point lead but Tyler Keitel marked 30 metres out from goal before kicking truly to ensure the match finished in a draw a short while later which was the WAFL's first drawn game in 10 years. Both sides sit fourth and fifth presently with plenty at stake in this game which should no doubt be an entertaining contest. The telecast of this match starts at 2pm on Channel Seven with bouncedown at 2:10pm.

There's no movement in the Reserves and Colts this week with all Reserves matches to begin at 11:40am while all Colts' games have bouncedown at 9:10am.

The weather for Saturday isn't looking great which has been a bit of a theme in the past few weeks. Showers are forecast for Saturday with 6-10mm predicted and a maximum of 19 degrees. The showers will generally be earlier in the day so hopefully should have mostly passed for the four League games in the afternoon.

This week is the last of the bye rounds so we'll get a pretty good read of the ladder once the round is done. There's certainly some interesting games to take place on Saturday with respect to the make-up of the top five so it should be another entertaining round of matches on Saturday. Happy tipping!!
