Just read in the HUN that Dean Wallis is returning to Windy Hill in an assistant role as defence coach after leaving the Saints.

Should be good from a developmental point of view. Great bloke, tons of experience, and it'd be great to have him back at the club.

I'm happy for Wallis to come back to the club in some capacity, but not as a freakin' coach. He was a fringe player for 80% of his career FFS! So now he's telling Fletcher, Wellman, Lucas, etc how to play the game? Give me a break. I'm sick of this 'jobs for the boys' sh*t that is going on at the club. Time for Sheedy to stop surrounding himself with his disciples and recruit some outside influences that are capable of providing some new perspective.

I can name some of the best coaches in the world from all sports who have NEVER even played their particular game. Knowing how to play something and being able to do it yourself has nothing to do with it.

And who are you to tell Sheeds who to have at the club and in what capacity? He has been a very successful coach and having ex-Bombers has always been his way. All of these ex-ppl have been in successful teams and know what needs to be done to keep moving forward.

Wallis can add a lot to a backline. He has a good mind for this sort of thing when he isn't out there himself. So what if he was a "fringe" footballer he still knows how to play the game. I mean after all you are not even a fringe player Pornstar but you seem to have plenty of opinions on how to do it.

It took Wallis 8-9 years to become a regular senior player. He always had the physical attributes to make it, but it took him that long to work out what to do. Why not get Guy McKenna who was a gun defender since day one? Someone who had a natural instinct for the game. Why not get an insight from him on how West Coast won 2 grand finals? Or someone from Adelaide? Or North? Or Brisbane? Is the Essendon way the ONLY way? Of course not. Other teams do things differently and it has won them multiple premierships. If we can learn a little bit from some of these teams we will be better off for it.

Yeah you gotta hate coaches who are loyal to ex-team members...
Hope some of wallis's mentality rubs off on a few players, as much of a fringe player as he was suprisingly he was one of the most respected players at the club.

Many players who have a natural instinct for the game do not make very good coaches. You can't teach players how to discover a natural instinct for the game. Therefore, whether the coach possessed it or not is irrelevant.

Did Sheedy have a natural instinct for the game?

No.

Would James Hird be able to teach his players to play the way he did if he was coach?

No.

I do get your main point though (about more outside influences), although I don't neccesarily agree. (nor do I disagree)

Coaches and their staff aren't stupid. They know what's going on at other clubs without having to get somebody from outside their own club to inform them.

Even we - the supporters - know what other clubs are doing just by watching a game!

Why do you think our coaching staff don't know?

So now he's telling Fletcher, Wellman, Lucas, etc how to play the game?

No offence, but you seem to have a very simplistic view of what coaching is in todays game.

It's no longer about the coach standing there yelling "kick the ball long!" or "handball at every opportunity!"

Coaches don't tell players how to play the game.

They devise ways to win the game.

Welcome home Deano. I have got into one or two players over the years but never D.Wallis , it amused me no end how , toward the end of his career, he became a cult hero, talk about hopping on the bandwagon !!
Porny, he`s been at St.Kilda for two years and learnt the ropes at another club. I for one like it when sheedy gets back Essendon people.

"Wally" comes home......heh heh....the return of the messiah......bummers slackline can only get better....:D :D :D

With the likes of Thornton, Livingston and co. in your defence ... I'd really, really shut up

Get set for another long, long year of 10 goal + thumpings **** head, the recruitment of a bunch of C-grade rejects won't help you!

Why are all these Carlton supporters suddenly so arrogant again? It's pathetic that they think they are going to be mildly competetive again next year.
