What did you guys think about Walters as the sub? From my limited view from the lounge room he probably didn't quite have the impact that you would want from a sub, but 2 shots on goal is still a decent return from a quarter and a bit. Thoughts?

I think both him & palmer need to do more, otherwise when Barlow, Ibbo, Mzungu & Roger come back they will be playing WAFL.

I think we are going to need to be really hard in our future selections assuming no more injuries, and returning players. Barlow is certainly best 22. Ibbotson is also. Mzungu may be, but needs to establish that he has not lost something from being injured. Silvagni is borderline. Hayden is unknown at this stage of his career, partly because what his role will be is unknown.

In addition Crichton and Pearce are looking worthy options.

Squeezing a couple of players from the current side to get certain improvement is not that easy. But I think Pitt, Walters and maybe Roberton could make way for Barlow, Ibbo and Mzungu. Crowley would be shakey too. Give it a few seasons and I think none of those three would spend much time out of the side.

A lot of water is going to pass under the bridge before Barlow/Mzungu/Hayden are available.

I would imagine Silvagni/Ibbo will be available after the bye for serious consideration, they really need at least one game in the WAFL. Then it would depend on how other players perform in the next 2 games.

Barlow/Mzungu/Hayden will probably be looking at mid-season before they seriously will be knocking on the door. A lot can happen between now and then!

Not sure how much to take out of it TBH. When he was picked as the sub I suspect they hardly planned for him to come on in place of 211. That said, I thought he did OK, and generated a fair bit of forward pressure for us. I think he was helped a lot by the excellent games from both McPhee and Kep, and it would not [edit - left the not out before] surprise me to see Son-son make way for Ibbo when Ibbo is fit, with someone like Roberton or MJ becoming the designated sub.

Not one of those four players coming in will see Palmer out.

Did he get more ink done during the week? He needs to settle down with that.

At least he isn't going the Dane Swan/Beams multi coloured route. I'm not a fan of tatts, but if you have to have them then go for the more traditional black, white and core colours versions, not the mega flouro ones that use the new inks and dyes...

So stay away from the purples and greens?

Haha!! :D:D:D Boom tish, very good...

I've seen a fair few Freo fans with a tinge of purple over the years, usually anchor shaped, which is great given the club we go for.

And, FWIW (and hopefully without derailing the thread too much), pure dark green is actually a very ancient tatt colour, dating back to the early Chinese and Mongolian skin decorations. On the other hand, until 1970s, no one had a viable orange colour for skin dyes, and the flouro yellows, pinks and bright limes that are all the rage with some younguns at the moment are products of the 90s and 2000s chemical industry. Similarly, no-one developed and marketed a brown dye for tatts until the 90s. Seriously, brown tatts, I mean WTF???

Plus I think Roger will find it hard to break back into this team.
roger is a walk up start in my best 21 if fit
people tend to put guys like roger and grover in the too old basket, when there week by week form is rarely substandard more often than not outstanding

The thing with Roger is that he demonstrated last year that age was catching up with him, getting caught more often, bad disposal etc. On top of that he suffered a major injury and so he is way behind the 8 ball to break back into this team in 2011. I hope that I am proven wrong and does a Grover on us because we all know that a fit and firing roger is in our top 10.

Walters did well as the sub in my opinion, got what.. 3 shots on goal with 1 scored? He came on and had an immediate impact, only thing is he should have come on sooner rather than have our bench reduced to 2 for pretty much the whole 3rd qtr.

Need to name his position, and take a look at who is "out". I find it quite difficult to select him and know for certain that he improves the side, and if a younger player matches him... that is a very tough call. In the backline he won't displace Broughton or Duff, and probably not Suban. Mzungu could also potentially be preferred given he will recover sooner than Roger.

And while people on here think we can shuffle Broughton midfield, it means he ends up needing to displace the likes of Mundy, Barlow, Palmer, Hill, Morabitto. Last year it looked like Roger may shift to the forward line, but again I just don't think that is now an option.

i think walters should have started on the bench not as sub.

i think the sub needs to be a more versatile player.

you cant have sandi replaced by walters.

your sub needs to be someone who can play anywhere on the ground depending on who he is replacing

I was amazed that Walters didn't spend even just a little bit of time in the midfield...it was clear that our blokes were becoming fatigued....if there was 1 negative from the game, that was probably it. I hope SonSon is not getting pinned down as a small forward....

I agree, I was itching for him to go in the midfield where he plays for swans. I think the sub needs the ability to run through there + pushing forward to really get the benefit of the fresh legs.
