Seems like a bit of a beat up, in the same article they say they might just put a strip on the statue like the Roar did in 2011. Didn't see rabble rabble rabble protests about that. IF it's done by the team it's unnecessary.

Ridiculous.

If anyone behind this decision wants to scream and cry about the mainstream attitude towards the sport in Australian society, they can eat s**t.

I have no regard for Rugby but this is enormously disrespectful. I mean, whose stadium is it?

It will always be known as soccer in australia
Yet this section of this forum, on an Aussie Rules site is called FOOTBALL Australia, not Soccer Australia. Not to mention that;
The FoxSports.com.AU site has the round ball game as football.
http://www.foxsports.com.au/
theroar.com.AU has the round ball game as football.
http://www.theroar.com.au/
Alpha when they were publishing has the round ball game as football
The AUSTRALIAN has the round ball game as football
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport
The majority of 'Football in Australia' links on Google.com.AU are football
https://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&gs_nf=1&cp=13&gs_id=1f&xhr=t&q=football in australia&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=football in a&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=c33d18147f5082cc&biw=1366&bih=643
Sportal has the round ball game as football

The AUSTRALIAN Broadcasting Corporation sports site has the round ball game as football

You can call it soccer if you want but people who don't live under a gigantic rock (yes that includes Australians) will call it football. Even Australia officially recognises it as football now, hence why its run by the FOOTBALL Federation Australia, and no, I do not care about what it was called 10 years ago (it's 2012, not 2002) or if the national team nickname is called the Socceroos (would be like arguing that rugby union is called Walla because the national team is known as the "Wallabies"). FOOTBALL Federation Australia, Adelaide United FOOTBALL Club, need I go on...

Oh and the INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE has the round ball game listed as FOOTBALL, not soccer http://www.olympic.org/football
Therefore it is football, end of discussion, even in the non-narrow-minded parts of Australia.

In all honesty I know a lot of people who refer the round ball game as football, but again I know many who don't.

Mate even Soccer diehards admit that the failed name change attempt has not worked. It will always be known as Soccer in Australia

Any evidence to back that up?

I'm a Lions member, go to every home game and I call the round ball game 'football', just like anyone who isn't narrow minded. Heck I know a guy who is also a Lions member, probably way more fanatical than I am, goes to every home game, has been a member way longer than I have and even he calls the round ball game 'football'. If you ask me of him for a favourite sport, my answer and his answer would be 'Aussie Rules' or Australian Football' Why? Because it is the ACTUAL name of the sport.

You still haven't addressed why all the sports websites I provided, which ARE AUSTRALIAN, call it FOOTBALL, not soccer. You also have not addressed why the INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE calls it FOOTBALL. If you argue with the IOC about the name of the sport, then you clearly are a muppet. Also you have not addressed why this section of an Aussie Rules website is called FOOTBALL Australia, not Soccer Australia.

Also if 99% of Australians call it soccer, why do you have to put 'Adel.Utd.SOCCER club' in your other teams section, when you clearly know the actual name is the Adelaide United FOOTBALL Club? If 99% of Australians live under a rock and still call it soccer, you wouldn't have to do that, would you?

I look forward to you backing up your argument with actual evidence, instead of spouting out rubbish because you know you are wrong.

The soccer v football argument comes up everywhere these days.

Who gives a s**t. I call it soccer so people know what I'm talking about. The game's real name is Association Football, and if the governing body of the sport in this country wants to call itself Football Australia let it, but if you say football in this country and expect most people to think of the round ball game, that wont happen.
