Blight tried that for 1 game with Geelong back in 1993 and then everyone (media, rival coaches & fans) were up in arms questioning the validity of a coach if the players themselves could simply pick the team they thought was best.

The resulting spectacle was this.

Was an exceptional game of footy from a scoring perspective, but like religion or politics, everyone, no matter how insignificant, wants their paycheck bro.

Didn’t he try it in 89, 92 and 94?

Wow, perhaps it’s a field any of us can get a gig to earn $100,000 per annum then.
Have you considered contacting the Cats? They're lacking a Head of Opposition Analyst Analyzer, along with a Senior Transition Performance Data Administrative Coordination Supervisor. I'm surprised the coaching box functions at all without these vital roles filled.

Key qualifications you'll need:
  • Etching a look of concern on your face for 180 straight minutes, brow furrowing mandatory.
  • 75 WPM touch typing, as typing anything that fast makes others assume its important.
  • Elite cardio vascular capacity for blowing smoke up the head coach's arse.
  • Exceptional IT skills for faking systems crashes when you're handballed blame.
  • Ownership of a broad smile and a sharp dagger to employ against your fellow analysts.
OR
  • A 200 game AFL career, the ability to dress yourself and be mostly sober.

Probably why we lost. :(

I take it back, senior coaches are still very much needed to make the big decisions.

Not sure, they once again failed to keep records

Fifteen people in Collingwood's coaching box. Fifteen.

How could footy not be an excessively-structured, convoluted mess with fifteen people performing the same role that for decades only required four, each desperately struggling to justify their paycheck by exerting as much control over player behavior as possible? Clubs have tried to circumvent the fixed salary cap by outspending their rivals in the coaching box, and the result is a hideous s**tshow.
You could replace those coaches with Mark Neeld and get the same result.

How many you got down there at Gumby Park, Friend?
Dunno but the way we’re tearing the league a new one this year we could always teach some more how it’s done.
