Gentlemen and Ladies, In case we dont alrady know the local ABC here in Bris Vegas is having a poll on

"Do you approve of the Brisbane Lions AFL team using the tune of the French National Anthem for their team song? "

and there is a poll thingy. So i urge you all to vote "YES" and end whatever agitation might start if , God forbid, they get a "NO" result. Also Spencer Howson, the pollster, might need to get a flood of emails pointing out the error of his ways in even suggesting the question in the first place. Now go to it!!!

here is the URL for the poll

I doubt the club, or the supporters would care no matter what the results of the poll were. It just goes to show that some people really have no idea what they are talking about (the person creating the poll, I mean!).

We had a panic phone call from a Club member in Qld about this.
Whatever the poll result, it won't effect the FFC Club Song which Bill stephen wrote 50 Years ago.
I remember a young French National at a Fitzroy game at the Western Oval in 1996 and he was absolutely thrilled to hear OUR CLUB SONG SUNG TO THE TUNE of his homeland's national anthem.

The results of the poll are:

160 votes counted

61% yes
38% no

which only adds up to 99% but nevertheless a victory for us. Thank you all for the votes!!:)

The Fitzroy Theme Song was played at the Davis Cup Final in Melbourne last year, but I seemed to be the only person, who knew the correct words.

The Frog mugs pinched it from us anyway. What revolution?

About twenty years ago, Bert Newton was on radio, after returning from Paris. He was asked what he thought of France. He said, "I felt right at home. They kept playing the Fitzroy theme song at the drop of a hat."

Ahhh ok now it all makes sense. I wasn't sure what all the 'radio part' was in this story - now I know - a poll and discussion.

I posted this on the main board earlier this week, but incase you didn't see it.

Because of that poll, and the discussion that went with it the Brisbane Lions actually received a phone call from the French Consulate in Canberra asking something about the tune. I believe it was along the lines of 'do you have permission to use it' or something. Was all very strange.

As for the Lions answer? I have no idea, it was referred to their media department from recollection.

as i mentioned on the main board... i know a thing or two about copyright...

i believe the French National Anthem is probably a work in the public domain here in Australia, as I would think the composers carked it well over 50 years ago. (french history isn't a strength, but I'm sure La Marsallaise was composed well into the 1800s) therefore the lyrics can be changed to create a new arrangement of a musical work.

hence bill stephen and the boys in the 50s created a new musical work when they re-write the lyrics, and after the merger, the combined bris bears/fitzroy lyrics created another nre musical work.

i be thinking that the french consulate ringing up is a crock - and if they did then they should have consulted their lawyers first.

La Marseillaise was written by a guy named Lisle, who wrote it one night, when he was drunk. When he woke up, he saw what he had written, but couldn't remember writing it.

It always seemed a very appropriate tune for Fitzroy.
