Tim probably never had a year as good as Jobe just had though.

The Brownlow win changes nothing. Tim should've won the 89 brownlow. Would that muddy people's perceptions further.

Jobe still has a job(e) to finish before he can stand alongside his old man. Tim was the most damaging midfielder in the comp between 1980 and 1990.

You cannot compare the two... Why do we continue these debates.

Tim Watson was a gun in his day. 3 time VFL/AFL Premiership winner and played over 300 games. In an Era of a slower paced game, he dominated. He booted 355 goals also.

Jobe plays in a quicker style game. He floats forward which is handy. He won a Brownlow which puts him up there, but put that against 3 premierships and that's where the argument is nullified..


3 Premierships v 1 Brownlow?

Tim Won essendon's B&F 4 times v Jobe's 3 times

Again different eras..

You have to look at who they were up against in those years..

I can't see how premierships make a difference when comparing the two as players.

Jobe is amazing but (on what I've seen) Tim had that incredible explosiveness that allowed him to work from the inside that sets him apart from all but the absolute freaks of history.

If I had to pick one based on his best I'd take Tim although I can't say whether Tim played with the sort of consistency Jobe has displayed in the last few years (I assume that he did).

Now have a look at Jobe's. Erm. Both of them.

Such fundamentally different players that a comparison can't be made.

What I will say is put them both in the same team at their prime and they would've complimented each other perfectly.

I dunno, 3 years captain - comprising a prelim, a GF, and a first-week finals exit. Plus a league MVP (arguably robbed of Brownlow) for himself. Pretty darned good record if you ask me.

Yes, but Tim was in a much better side.

That takes us back to the part where it's almost impossible to compare them.

Yeah, how a side performs under a captain isn't as cut and dry as "they made x amount of finals".

I don't think we've seen a better year from a captain of Essendon in 5-10 years; us bending over on a weekly basis after Round 14 shouldn't reflect on Jobe.

Hopefully next year he can still deliver those "You come with me" performances like those against Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, except his teammates are actually good enough to do so.
