ok not necessarily for carey, and not necessarily this early, but if adelaide are out of contention early (and i'm not writing them off now) would you bring him in prematurely to prepare for careys retirement when he will have to a forward spot.Originally posted by Stiffy_18
It would help if Watts was fit.
I might be the only one here but Carey was not our worst player yesterday. He competed really well but its not his fault the delivery was crap and crumbers had no brains.

I would have Michael over Scarlett any day. Maybe its just me but personally I think Mal Michael is the best fullback in the comp. He is also one of the fairest players around. Something that can't be said for Scarlett.Originally posted by acg_204*
Agreed. And if he'd kicked straight he could've had 4 goals and no-one would be complaigning. Not to mention the fact that Michael would be only second behind Scarlett in terms of the best full backs in the league.
If we fall deeper into dung as we appear to be heading that way, then Watts will be given a run if he is not injured. If the wheels fall off then I think all of the youngsters will get a fair run.Originally posted by essnickess

So it is OP. Its good to hear he is getting over it. He was listed at the beginning of the week as 1 week away from resuming. I think next week he will line up for the Eagles. Maybe he will line up in the seniors despite lack of match fitness.Originally posted by ant
Well, I bumped into Fergus last night and had a bit of a chat, he reckons he's pretty much over his bout of OP and will be back in a week, next week....take from that what you will.
Nice bloke btw, loves Jet too....he's got some good moves.

I would still like him to put on a more muscle before he gets to play AFL footy. Maybe play him in the later 3rd of the season on a flank or in a pocket. The kid has exceptional pair of hands. If he gets his hand on the ball he very rarely drops a mark. If he can stay injury free and continues on with his development and right attitude, he will be one hell of a player for us.

No harm but let him settle down with the Eagles first. Give him a run in the 2nd half of the year when we have a bit easier draw. And don't bring him in for 1 week and then drop him. If we bring him in be prepared to give him at least couple of games in a row.Originally posted by ant
And yeah, don't see any harm in giving him a bit of a taste for it sometime this year, injuries notwithstanding.
Fair point.Originally posted by McLeod23
The scary thing to me is that we just don't have talented young guys waiting to replace the retirees at the end of the year.
The blame for this lies sqarely at the coaching group and the recruiting team. Over the past few years we have trading away nearly all of our second and third round picks, where many good players have been picked up. We've also traded a golden first round pick (in the Carey deal), another in the same deal, and stuffed one up with Angwin.
St. Kilda for example not only have the high picks like Riewoldt, Goddard, Ball etc, they also have kids that were taken in the second and third round such as Maguire. We just dont' have these and it will set back out rebuilding phase by another 1-2 years.
I've thought the same thing re Reilly/NDS.Originally posted by Stiffy_18
Fair point.
I think all of us have to realise that it will take 3 years for us to rebuild. In these 3 years we must keep our picks and recruit some talented youngsters. We all agree that Reilly is going to be a very good player for us in time but lets not forget that a pick after Reilly, Saints selected Nick Dal Santo. I don't know about you guys but I know who I would rather have in my team.
If Ayres is to go, then I would want us to look elsewhere BUT I am almost certain that Craig will get the top job with us for 2005.Originally posted by crows98
If Aryes is to go........is Neil Craig going to be his successor or someone else from interstate.
The coaching staff should all go and start again. Shawn Rhen and Darren Jarman (only current coach who should stay) to rebulid the squad. Rhenny did it with west and he can do it with us Malcome bight style.
Both are talented but the main difference is that NDS gets his accolades for the runs he has on the board where as Reilly gets his for the glimpses he as shown here and there. This year Reilly has to REALLY step up to show us what he can do otherwise he will get th eoverrated tag very quickly.Originally posted by DaveW

Is it just me or is Reilly a bit overrated on what he's shown so far?

The thing is that we never had a true FB. Never did we have a player that played FB and who ever was playing FF for the opposition he would stand them. Ever since our 1st game we always had a makeshift FB.Originally posted by Jerome
True. Especially in key positions, which are the problem areas.
I think with Watts, Krueger and Rutten we have at least had a go at developing options for a long term CHF/FF combination. Jericho on a flank could also be a handy pick up. So that's not too bad.
Its full back and the ruck that worries me! We havent been smart enough in getting long term options for these spots.

Agree, let's not burn him early as he is an important part of our future. Play him in the SANFL for a while & if his form warrants it, he will get a game sooner than later. Playing Watts in the last 2 games would not have changed the results.Originally posted by Wayne's-World
AFL games should never be given lightly.
The kid has to develop his game and gain confidence, so that if he gets an opportunity, he's prepared.
That means this season oin the SANFL - regardless of our situation.
