guys, I think you are all putting WAY too much pressure on Reils.
And saying that he has REALLY step up this year is a bit too much to ask! He only played a handful of games last year, and you can't expect him to come in and play like the Goodwins and the McLeods with a click of the fingers! Players take time to develop.

And Dave W: Sorry but I beg to differ. I don't think he's overrated at the moment at all. I watched him closely yesterday and he not only plays the attacking style, but hes defensive game is really improving. And for gods sake, he played on Akerman

I've always thought so... even when everyone on this board thought he was the best thing since sliced Johncock ;)

OK lets have a look at this one OBJECTIVELY.

Both were taken in the same draft one at pick #12 the other one at pick #13.

Both have same time in the AFL system. Both had injury problems. Both have played a handful of games. Both are midfielders. Only one has put the runs ont he board.

If Reilly was a KPP I would give him more time because they take longer to develop. A midfield draftee has to play good consistent football in the seniors in his 3rd year at the club. If not the chances are he is not as good as everyone predicted.

This is Reilly's 3rd year and this is the year he has to REALLY step up. I don't expect him to play at the same level as the likes of Ricciuto, Goodwin or Edwards. What I do want him to do is be a consistent performed that averages 15-17 possesions a game and kicks a goal per game. I also want him to show some match winning ability.

This doesn't go only for Reilly, this goes for Schuback as well but to the lesser extent because he is less experienced and has been drafted much later.

Taking all this biased opinion aside, if I was asked to pick a player for my team between Reilly and Dal Santo, I would go for Dal Santo as would a vast majority of Footy followers.

No way, Dal Santo thanks.

Lets see how Brent Reilly(played 9 games as 4/4) is traveling after 28 AFL games. Thats is the same amount of games Nick Dal Santo has played.Plus with all due respects to the St Kilda Football club they havent got nearly the on ball team we have had in the last 2 years so Nick Dal Santo has had the opportunity to make some mistakes.

Skill and football development is about opportunity and a little bit of luck. Anyone remember Kane johnson and Peter vardy's first 10 or so games not much to write home about and they turned into pritty good players for the crows.

Brent reilly will do ok if he is given a go to play on the ball/ wing or across a half back flank

JUdge him this time next season after he has played about 25- 30 games

The kid can play " go crows"

Worth remebering Reiily missed the end of last year because of the shoulder. He was starting to threaten for a regular spot prior to that. Also worth keeping in mind the type of player Reilly is, put him in a team that's dominating (rather than getting flogged) and he would look better.

In my view it's too early to pass judgement on Reilly, if he plays 20+ matches this year then he's taken a step forward. That'll put him in front of the others vying for his position on the wing.

I just hope we're not pushing Reilly at the moment. I don't think he is 100% after the knock to his shoulder. I'd rather someone else play who is fully fit than risk Reilly.

Speaking of young Saints, one guy I wouldn't mind at West Lakes is Matt Maguire. I've kept a close eye on him since the start of last year and he has really developed. Strong and bloody aggresive, he'd slot perfectly in at FB for us. He and McGregor at FB and CHB with Hentschell as a third tall sounds pretty good to me. ATM we just don't have anyone to take "Maguire's spot".

Can someone tell me how Parker is going? Don't hear much about SANFL in Queensland. We need him to come good.

Reilly will be a great player - any analysis is purely subjective - its like trying to compare Judd v Ball v Hodge. We will have to judge them over a longer period.
Having said that - the kid is in his second full season, and IMO is doing a great job.
I can tell you there's at least another 8 players we should turn our gun on b4 Reilly.

Reilly is fine and is 100%.

I know what you mean about Maguire. The kid is dynamite. The thing is that he was a bargain pick up. What was he pick 17?????

The bloke I would want at FB is Brian Harris from Western Bulldogs. He is a bit older but I love the way that bloke plays. He is the perfect FB. Will be like Mal Michael in years to come.

Talk about putting it out there!
I though my comparison of Reilly to Voss (sremember playing style only) was out there, but your right there with me on this one.;)

I wouldnt consider Rodney Eade dont think he has what it takes at AFL level.

I don't quite understand why you would think that?

it wasn't long ago he was thought to be the brightest new coach in the game.

If we were to appoint a rookie coach in the future (eg. Jonas, O'Donnell), then an experienced coach such as Wallace or Eade as an assistant should be considered.

Kane, that will never happen.
Those two make far more from their media commitments than they ever would out of being an assistant. Add to that I can't see that their egoes would allow them to be 2ic.

I still think that the head coach must pick his own assistants.

Far too negative on his players. He spent too much time emphasising what they did wrong and weren't allowed to do. Very similar to Robert Shaw in that sense.

But tactically, very very good.
In the end he suffered because of his "man management" skills with the players.

Would take a massive re-invention to get another gig. I think he has resigned himself to the fact that he won't coach in the AFL again.

Maguire was pick 21.

Harris will be a good player, but there is no way the Dogs will let him go. He is their fullback for the next decade.

Ditto Maguire and the Saints.

Ain't gonna happen. As NM said they are earning a hell of a lot more in the media and their egos wouldn't see them accepting a role as assistants.
