Jack Watts

PORT Adelaide skipper Travis Boak played a vital role in the Power luring Tom Rockliff, Steven Motlop and Jack Watts to Alberton.

Boak was in constant dialogue with the trio as they weighed up their futures amid interest from rival clubs.

He also hosted Watts at his home and caught up with Rockliff in Brisbane while he was in Queensland on a surfing holiday.

The Power made strong pitches to all three, focusing on what they could each bring to the team.

Watts was extremely impressed with the Power, with not only how he could fit into their system, but with the club as a whole.

This is why I’m certain Boak will remain captain in 2018.

Nice article on Jack in today's Sunday Age. And the picture is interesting, Logan Austin at full stretch pushing him in side as he is about get rid of the ball.

It was time for Jack Watts to leave Melbourne. That it took the 26-year-old a while to get his head around a decision that many supporters are still struggling to come to terms with doesn't make the call to trade him wrong. For too long, and through no fault of his own, the name Watts has dominated any conversation around Melbourne. Multiple coaches knew before going into any media conference that a question about Watts would inevitably arrive, regardless of how relevant his name was to what had happened or was about to happen at the Demons. At one point former coach, Mark Neeld, joked (we presumed) that journalists would need to put money into a jar every time they mentioned Watts but it stopped no one, with the focus continuing under Paul Roos and Simon Goodwin.
....
His willingness to hang around for nine years (and even more if he had his way) says more about who he is than what the Demons initially wanted him to represent. He is mentally tough, loyal and popular but he was never going to be the saviour in a team sport that depends on so much more than one man. That was Melbourne's fault for raising expectations beyond reality but not something that should affect decisions made now at Melbourne. The recognition that his road at Melbourne had been full of potholes meant Simon Goodwin is not the first coach to suggest trading him. Paul Roos even wondered aloud to Watts whether it would be the best thing for the No.1 pick to start his career afresh somewhere else, not because he didn't rate him but because he thought his football might benefit from a change. For as long as he wore the red and blue Roos knew Watts' actions would be magnified and judged...........

Only played 14 games in 8 seasons at the Demons. No wonder they dumped him.

Reading that full article, the Melbourne president goes on to talk about how they want "ferocious" players and don't want to be perceived as being soft, etc.

Well, if their idea of tough is guys like Lewis, Hogan and Bugg who whack opponents off the ball or that campaigner Oliver who threatens to kill an opposition fan in the front row then it's no wonder they haven't played finals in 11 years and counting.

Jack will reach his potential at Port because we actually know how to football unlike his previous club.

Robbo makes the argument that it is most likely that the problem is Watts as he has played under 5 coaches in his 8 seasons at Malbun;

"Watts played under five Melbourne coaching regimes and none was able to extract from Watts what almost everyone believes is in him. Maybe all five groups couldn’t coach – and there would be an argument for some of them – but just maybe Watts also has to take responsibility for his own footy."

If all those coaches were so good, including "Show Me The Money" Roos, why have Melbun had 5 coaches in 8 years?

Where does 5 coaches come from that's been repeated ad nauseam ? He had Bailey, Neeld, Roos and Goodwin as permanent coaches and fill in coaches of Viney 5 games after Bailey was sacked and Neil Craig 11 games after Neeld was sacked. Its either 4 or 6.

Are you questioning the accuracy of Robbo's reporting?

Having a 9 year player who was a beloved #1 draft pick then moving him on cheaply and him going on to play in three premierships with his new club does seem like a quintessentially “Melbourne” sort of thing. Just saying.

Martin Pike is a good example - gets cut after 2 years, spends 2 years at Fitzroy, plays in their last game, goes to North plays in 2 GF's and a flag (1997-2000 plays in 2 PFs and 2 GFs in 4 seasons at North) and then gets cut as is a bit of a wild child, Brisbane draft him in 2000 draft for a pick in the 30's or 40's first 3 years, 3 flags, 4th year a GF and final year misses finals. Nice 13 year 250 game career.

Lol there'd be a few blown head gaskets in the MCC on GF day.
