I see there has being differing opions on our past captain thus far. Ill throw in my 2 cents.

In dire times for the last 10+ years Campbell has been a champion for the club. We have had alot of shtye players and years but Wayne was a standout and always gave his best. Top 3 seven times, 4 times b&f winner.

At the current he is still easily in our best 22 and adds alot to a young side.

- 2 time All-Australian
- Played for the Big V
- Represented Australia in the International Series against the Irish
- Lead Richmond to the finals as Captain in 2001
- Favourite for the Brownlow in 1995
- Averages just under 24 touches a game over a 13 year period
- 4 times Best and Fairest (under 4 different coaches)
- 3 times runner up Best and Fairest
- 1 time 3rd Best and Fairest
- 2004: Wayne was top 20 in disposals in the league.

Body is clearly slowing down, but his smarts are obvious and he's featured prominantly in the last two games as they have gone down to the wire. Having him playing well is a good sign, gives the kids a little more time to develop at Coburg, especially given we are starting to struggle with injuries.

Id take him on in 2006 if wanted another year.

With our list currently maturing as it is,so would I

He never mentioned retirement. It's a pity he had injuries in 03 and 04 because some of our fans forgot that he was and still is a very good player. Same with Gaspar.

This is a great post bentleigh, Wayne Campbell is truely a Richmond legend and defiently features in our top 22. THE LEGEND OF CAMPBELL CONTINUES............. and hopefully will continue at least till the end of next year.

Yes he did. It was in an article in The Age earlier on this year. He want's to go travelling with his girlfriend next year. If his form and fitness are still good at season's en, he may go around again and have a chance to knock up 300 games (and play in a premiership! ;) )

One thing I have always admired about Campbell is that he is not a sheep. He is his own man and does things his way regardless of what others may or may not think. It would be un-campbell like to announce that it is his last year and then do an about face. I can see him giving his all and then simply walking away content with his imput to RFC,as he should be.Thats why its amusing that some here label him as selfish.Mick Martyn hung on for dear life to get 300.That was selfish.Thats not Wayne Campbells style. The prospect of hanging on to the coat tails of a young team on the up would be tempting too,but as I say Wayne is a do what I say type man. He's a champ in my eyes.Top shelf.

You forgot the most important one.Just like the Richo,s,Daffy,s,Gale,s Cambo went missing when the heat was on.How many times during the 90,s we get to the last rnd and the same suspects let us down.
As a good player he is he is no champion.

I fell in love with him when I fell in love Richmond, so he's always been a special player to me. On ya Cambo.

I grew up supporting the Crows but the round three game in '95 (where we belted the Kangaroos) changed things for me for ever, and one 'Wayne Campbell' quickly became my favourite player and a reason why i loved watching the tiges. He has truly given his all over the years, and even though he's nowhere near as exciting as he once was, he is invaluable to our team, especially at the moment in this developmental time. Would love to see him reach 300 games but as someone said before it's just not his style. He'll always be a special player for me as he is one of the main reasons I will always now follow the Yellow and Black. God Bless you Wayne!

Campbell would always take the heaviest tag in big games and struggled most of the time. Once him and Knights were taken out of the game we were pretty much cooked. Never had enough good players to pick things up when certain others were down.

It's a luxury the best teams have.

So you're saying he only performed in small games when he wasnt tagged?

All good players get tagged. The ones that can be labeled as champions are the ones that still perform for their team.

TOO is spot on to put this in the best context. He was one of many that went missing when we needed them most.

It's a total misconception that champions always perform in big games.

I've seen plenty of big games where the likes of Ablett, Carey, Voss, Hird have gone missing. It's just that they don't come under as much scrutiny becuase they have enough good players around them to pick up the slack and still win.

I'm sure if any of those champions just mentioned played for Richmond they wouldn't be as highly regarded as they are now.

I'm not putting Campbell in their category, but i'm just saying that Campbell gets unfairly treated because when he goes missing we nearly always lose matches. That's not always the case for players that are regarded as champions.

This is definitely his last year: said so the other day

He's still easily in our top 22 but it's embarassing to see him running up and down on the spot and getting outrun by players that aren't half as good as he was.

He is leaving at the right time.

Exactly! Was the same with Knights as well. Was a little sad to see.

with campo laving it will be the end of an era but we must move forth, he ha ssaid he wants to leave and will do so as one of our most distinguished players despite the fact that he wanted to be traded to carlton and nearly was he has come back and put in 100% for this club....he ha sbeen worth the big bucks and we should send him of the best way possible, by playing finals this year
