General Bombers Talk "We created a mini-football club"

Woah, long article. Seems to be cobbled together from Jobe's retirement presser and a few snippets of interviews with the other players, but there's some new stuff in there too.

I like this bit, which is where they got the headline from evidently:
A support crew was assembled, too, sporting types without official roles who could help co-ordinate training for players who wanted to participate.

In that group were Watson's uncle, Dave Holt, a tough Port Melbourne champion who called spades shovels, and his mate Wayne Rodgers, enlisted to run water and lift spirits. Former Carlton physio Simon Nelson was also on board to deal with aches and pains and provide rehabilitation when needed.

All were disconnected, in a professional sense, from the game, which made them eligible to help guide the players.

Adam Iacobucci's gym, a black building surrounded by a wire fence in an industrial area in Airport West, was available for weights sessions, with the relative anonymity it provided a bonus.

Iaccobucci, who played four games for Collingwood in the mid-2000s, was discreet and respected their space, the perfect man to help.

Little had played a part in the logistics and by rallying support, while Allan Dunn, the Bombers' chaplain, was cleared to drop by too if an ear was needed.

What was being established would only become clear later.

"We created a mini-football club," Myers said.

I love how it's all someone's uncle and someone's mate. Sounds like a community effort. Juxtapose that with what Malthouse, Buttifant and Wellman were offering, it's obviously a bit more low-key and informal.

If the AFL can cobble together a few more in depth pieces like that on various topics instead of Barrett's pathetic 'scoops' the newspapers might need to watch their backs because that is the sort of journalism people want to read.

Peter Ryan is a good writer and he tends to focus on footy, or more established "news" rather than muck-raking.

This was a good read yday evening.
a different perspective on the saga. less about who was at fault or not, but on what the banned players did when they weren't allowed near the game.
Gave a good insight into how easily they could have fallen into an abyss and the way effective support structures help.
Read this and watched the Yarran video around the same time
too little limelight is given to the positives in life.

I've always thought of him as a neutral sort of writer, he sort of fills the gaps, writes game reports or reports on those blurb per team type articles for the teams that aren't already covered by other journalists. This article seems like something he's been working on for a long time, rather than the bread and butter articles. I appreciate him more now than I used to :p

the game reports stuff is why i like him
no muck raking nonsense. no getting himself in the limelight for the story.
I don't need endless articles on who is getting sacked/suspended/blah this week.

Give me the game reports, the injury reports, some insight stuff on club inner workings and the analysis on form and upcoming games.

I care little for the rumour and innuendo in footy.
If i wanted that, i'd abandon sports and pick up a woman's day or follow Richard Wilkins' blog or something.

Footy isn't a soap opera.

Amen to that. If you can't find an interesting fact to talk about you're not a very good journalist tbh.
