Come on.

We continuously get owned by the opposition's most damaging midfielders.
Judd, Ablett, Hill, now Rich/Black/Power.

The annoying thing for me is that players like Hill and Rich are still young and can be shut down easily, but if you let them lose they are extremely damaging.

Why does MM allow these type of mids to run straight through the middle?

I would've thought the run with roles have worked quite effectively the last couple of years especially. Just a bit of defensive pressure at the stoppages is needed (which was lacking tonight) and it stops the effectiveness of any midfielder.

Nup, disagree. I don't think good teams need a specific tagger, defensive midfielder maybe but you lose to much if you have someone who only goes out to tag. We need midfielders that are willing to show their opponents a modicum of respect. Didak struts around in the midfield and every single stoppage ignores his opponent (Power for a large part tonight), backs himself in to win it every time and gets shown up. Fair enough when it's in our 50 and he is dangerous, he backs himself. But multiple times in our D50, he thinks it should be opponents going to him, he doesn't bother to even get feel on an opponent and he gets shown up.

Luke Power isn't worthy of a tag these days, he is deserving of a certain amount of ****ing respect though.

Too many blokes looking to be the finisher or get on the end of the play, not enough willing to gut run the other way and quell their opponents influence.

Yeah, we don't need a tagger necessarily, at least we don't need one against Luke Power. We just need our players to lay a tackle occasionally.

... okay that's a stupid comment by me, normally our tackling is exemplary, but tonight it was non-existent.

sorry to intrude but i kinda agree with the op.

Rich has been quiet for the first few weeks as he was being given plenty of attention. He has been playing himself into form and learning to shake a tag... but still not as damaging as he was last year.

Tonight he showed his skills as he wasn't being given due attention.

We wouldn't send a tag to Rich even if we had a tagger, so I don't really see your point. Why would we sacrifice a player to stop someone like Rich? He is a decent young kid, but worthy of the sole attention of one of our midfielders? Hardly...
Our midfield doesn't function like that anyway, we thrive off consistency across the board, we don't have an absolute stand out midfielder that draws a tag and hence we can't afford to be giving up that right to our opposition..

Anyway, it just happens to have worked out that Brisbane came out a goal ahead tonight, if Anthony's mark was rightfully paid, it'd be a completely different thing we'd be discussing right now. We'd be asking why Brisbane didn't bother to tag Swan, Thomas, Pendlebury or Didak.
It's a fine line.

We need midfielders that show respect to opponents as well as their own games, instead of the two being mutual exclusive as they currently seem to be.
