Truth is we need lots of things nevertheless Ben Griffiths being injured leaves us way short up forward with only Jack Riewoldt there to do the business, whilst alot of our supporters want a midfielder, Id suggest that what we should do with our first pick is get the best key forward we can with our first pick, that being the case, If Sam Day goes to GC as everyone expects we should probably draft Daniel Gorringe from SA - 198cm tall, really good speed, good movement, can take a decent grab. iT Will also give us cover for Ben Griffiths with his shoulders.

I wanted a midfielder in the past months, but a big forward will help us more IMHO.

sheesh lets learn from our past. pick 4 should at the least gain us a very good player if not elite. under no circumstance should we be mucking around with top 10 picks at all times take best available even if we have an abundance of the type.
we really do have to learn from our past. besides go have a look at previous drafts a large number of very good talls have beeen taken in the 2nd and 3rd rnds.

We don't necessarily need a key forward. Plenty of teams have gotten the job done with only one key forward. What we do need is more forwards full stop. With Morton now apparently a wingman, we've only got Riewoldt to do genuine damage down forward, and Collins is the only other player that even looks like contributing regularly. We desperately need some damaging small/medium targets to give our forward line any sort of structure.

Sheesh, 15 weeks ago people were screaming for just ONE key forward. Now, completely unexpectedly, we have that and people immediately demand another.

PATIENCE people...!!!

Nup, not every team needs a Roughead/Franklin, Brown/Fev combo. Griffiths will be a very good player, Astbury is suited to CHF too. What we need is a crumber/medium forward to kick 30 odd a year. Nason is a good player but that's not his role. Nahas isn't it. Collins isn't quite it. Troy Taylor may well be just the ticket. Really wouldn't mind Carl Petersen right now. Long story short, it must be a midfielder with our first pick unless someone ridiculous like Day is available.

nice sheesh there mate. i do think you agree with me.

people forget it has taken 4 yrs for jack to get to where he is now. griffiths post and astbury are very immature first and second yr players.

we actually rookied and promoted polak to fill the void in the other key position.
its been an unmitigated failure.

ya know atm we have some cover down back and have a kid in gourdis who was a very good junor key forward.
in fact he has all the attributes that our other forwards lack.
if they are so reluctant to give him a go down back and for the life of me i cant fathom why, why not give him a job as a fast leading tall ff with size out of the square.

Astbury and Griffiths have not made an impact in there first year so lets use pick 4 on another tall forward. Give them time. Plus we have Post who could also maybe play KPF.

I'm starting the think Post is exactly that. A post.

Astbury was terrific today down back, but would really love to see him at CHF next week and Posty CHB.

i'm hearing ya tugg, don't like what i see...at least with Vickery, Ive seen a dash here and there, some good handball through heavy traffic, enough to keep the fires stoked, with Posty Im still scarred badly from that nightmare where he had marks slip thru his hands, bouncing ball go through his legs, enough to send me batty

back to the OP though, I reckon between Grigg, astro and hoff we have enough invested that one should come off, meaning that early selection should be on a mid...Look how rank we were without cotch in the pivot...we need to supersize it with Cotch, Martin, Axel, Jacko and Gaff:thumbsu:

We should keep Post in the team, But i would like us to give Gourdis a shot there first. Or atleast try Gourdis in the forward line since we only have Riewoldt down there.

For a premiership you do. Geelong haven't had a star FF/CHF combo but they have the star FB/CHB combo and stars in every other part of the ground.

Don't agree here. Geelong is the clear exception, you said it yourself. Star FB/CHB is not what we're talking about, and anyway Taylor was the weak link of their side until halfway through last season. You need one strong key forward to win a flag, but you don't necessarily need two. Hopefully this becomes irrelevant anyway, because I believe Griffiths is a gun and Astbury may even be better.

I'll try saying it in a different way then, didn't write it well last time.
I think you need one of these two:
1. Star FF/CHF combo
2. Star FB/CHB combo
Realistically, we're probably not going to have the star FB/CHB combo. So...

BASICALLY
We need:
A big CHF in the mould of Nick Riewoldt - huge engine, runs all day
and/or (preferably and)
A big FB in the mould of Brian Lake - solid body, shuts down #1 forwards

If you need a star FF/CHF or FB/CHB combo, how do you explain West Coast, Sydney, Port Adelaide?

I reckon Gourdis will be as good as Lake. And Astbury will be very good. Hoping anyway. Predicting. I honestly think another key forward is not a priority at the moment; they would just get the way of Griff, Ast, Post development.

Another A-grade midfielder is the priority. They win you premierships and make your KPP's look good, see West Coast/Geelong, etc.

Our midfield is not as good as some make it out to be. You're now seeing how poor our depth is in this area with a couple injuries/suspensions that we have been lucky with all year until this point while other sides haven't. You need at least 7-8 capable midfielders in the rotation maybe more. We don't have that.

After our top few midfielders the quality drops off considerably.
