These two boys need to really think about where there footy is at. Neither seem to have any passion and are very uncommitted when it comes to putting in the hard yards.

I think for our team to go forward some serious thinking needs to be done by the coach.

Should these two be apart of our future? I think not.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

I also felt Mal played pretty well - considering his size and the speed of the game. I agree with Laycock being almost useless - except for giving Hille a rest and I hope for his sake - he can show the club why they should retain him. Stanton had a well below par game by his standards.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Mal was fine, solid and had a cool head. Was good in traffic too.

Laycock wasn't too good in the second but improved and broke even in the second half I think. He was always chasing but can't help being slower.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

mal was great today, what drugs are you on? laydick though...he was terrible

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Mal was not great, so let's not go overboard. He was a solid contributor and held his own.

Laycock..........well I don't need to say anything do I?

Far out...........Hille is the most important player in our side by a long long way.

No Hille = No Essendon.

Sad, but in general, we'd struggle to win without him.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Laycock played nicely in the last qtr. See his handpass to Atkinson?
Jetta wearing the long sleeves made him play like Laycock ;)

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Well before we send laycock off to the wolves we have to get another mature ruckman. We can not go into next season with Hille , Bellchambers age 19 and some 18 year old ruckman who we may have to draft.
Yes we will have Ryder but i think Paddy will fill the role that Fletcher has done for us over the last 15 years. I really think his best position will be as a defender and as our FB/CHB.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Mal was really good I thought. I thought Knights had just about written him off but if he finishes the season strongly I'd like to see him get another year.

Laycock was alright. People need to get off his back. Had quite a few hitouts.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

I thought Laycock was alright today. yes he may be a little slow and have the fumbles sometimes but he tried as hard as he could and he did some good things in the last quarter.

Mal also tried hard today but I don't see him having a future in this Essendon team. He deserves to play these last couple of games and go out on a high note.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

I thought Mal was an even contributor today, and wasn't too bad last week either. Mal made some hits, laid some decent tackles and his disposal was spot on. He wanted to do all he could to get the team over the line no doubt.

As for Laycock, well I mean, the guy just needs to get his head around what is going on. I agree with the OP in that Laycock lacks *Passion*. It is one thing that no one can argue that he lacks. He is a BFG. Needs to fire up and have some desire to win, and maybe then everything will click for him.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

He only had a handful of touches, but Laycock did have 15 hit outs.

BTW, everyone saying get rid of him, which teams have better #2 ruckmen going around? Its not like ruckmen exactly grow on trees. When Laycock was dropped for the one game, by memory I think he dominated the VFL match. Given his age, I think people are really jumping the gun to want to get rid of him.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Michael did his job today and was one of the reasons we contained the Pies to below 15 goals, a solid all round defensive effort.

Re Laycock, if we get rid of him now it will cost us, and he is being kept in the side because a) Hille can't ruck for four quarters b) they believe he can improve. We have not seen the best this kid can produce, but we have in the past seen him play better than he has this year, and we cannot afford to write him off, not until they decide he is no longer capable of improving. And that sort of decision isn't one you make when a player is playing his worst footy, shot on confidence and under siege by a ravenous media and personal attacks from 'supporters'.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Mal played a very good team game yesterday, Laycock seems to be in nowhere land ATM not sure if he is unhappy at the club or what, he is one of those players that should be playing much better than he does, I would stick with him for another year, he has the talent to do good things which we have seen from him, it just could be time?

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Challenge to all the Laycock haters - watch a replay of the second half then get back to me.

He was super important - there was a stint in the 3rd quarter where he had several hit outs to advantage and we kicked a couple of goals - and he was good in the last as well.

If he can continue to provide a contest in the middle he is paying his way, giving Hille the chance to rest, etc. He is still young and we need to remember where Hille was at the same age.

We should focus on the positives of which there are plenty!

Is it illegal to stick a buzzer under this guy's pants so that when the coach needs to activate him, he can give him an electric shock?

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Michael had a solid game

Laycock was O.K in the 1st half (a few errors highlighted by the commentary team on channel 10) Was solid in the 2nd half.

Laycock shows glimpses of what he can/ will achieve in a few years time when he develops into a fully fledged ruckman. It can understand the dislike for him at times as he can be frustrating to watch at times, however we need to stick it out with him as I believe he will become more and more important to our team.

You seriously need to get a clue. Mal's been more than serviceable the past 2 weeks and has more than justified his spot.

Laycock was ok yesterday and has been slowly improving.

They can't all be world beaters.

I don't think anyone is questioning his ruckwork efforts, it is simply his constant fumbling. Surely by AFL level you can catch a bouncing ball. Send him to the VFL for a few weeks to get his confidence back.

Re: Laycock and Michael = No Passion!

Did anyone notice that when Laycock was put into the ruck we kicked no goals and Collingwood cought up but when Hille was put back in the ruck we kicked goals and increased our lead.

New theory on Laycock

Why dont we try something new with Laycock? And i say "we" meaning the fans. How about we actually start supporting this guy and cheering for him rather than bagging him at every opportunity or given him a bronx cheer when he does something right.

People dont realise he has only played 55 games. That would mean he is only into his 3rd season of AFL Footy. For what its worth i believe he has shown more in his first 55 games than what david hille did with his.

Laycock has proven that he can play forward. He has also proven than he can step up when required to be the number 1 ruck when the main man is not available. Both something david hille failed to do in his first 50 games.

So how about we cut this guy some slack and support and encourage this guy to play well. All he needs imo is a little confidence in himself and his ability to show exactly what he can do on the field. Matty Knights has shown it to him in recent weeks with selection and i think we should all follow our leader and do the same. :thumbsu:

Re: New theory on Laycock

Its not just his confidence its his work rate and how hard he tries so many times when a team is kicking in against us they always seem to kick to laycocks man who is about 50m loose from him.

Re: New theory on Laycock

Ok, I agree with you. How about this, when we play Melbourne, everyone get the word around the ground to Essendon supporters to cheer Laycock when he steps up for his first ruck contest. And then whenever Laycock does something team orientated, or something good, get behind him and give a loud cheer. How's this sound?
