Something on another thread got me thinking (unusual ) about weird names for a footy team, even nicknames.

Ganmain Grong-grong matong is a good one
Mangoplah-Corkardinia united is a winner as well
A club i used to play against Tuggeranong is up there

As far as nicknames i believe there is a team in SA amatuer footy that has a nickname of the Raggies ( cant remember the club name. Thats a bit unusual.

Anyone else got any.
 
Someone has to start up a club in Intercourse, Pennsylvania (yes it exists, my girlfriend has pens she swiped from a hotel there to prove it (and yes, it's called the Intercourse Motel)).

Dubbo Iguanas is the best nickname I reckon. Also up that way the Mudgee Black Swans, somehow seems a little more intimidating than just the swans, hey?

Bena Beanmen isn't bad either (though they're gone since a little while back).

East Brighton Vampires, the name won in a vote with East Brighton Scallops the other option.

Port Noarlunga...good to see another Port maintaining the old traditional names of the PAFC.

Irrewillipe-Pirron Yallock or Pirron Yallock-Irrewillipe would have been a brilliant name. But they fluffed it and called themselves the Western Eagles.

Yep, I've been to Irrewillipe, too.

I wrote about them in an article that I eventually ditched because it had too many personalisms (ie nobody would understand half of my terminology because I made a few words up). But, seeing as you've mentioned them, here is a long-lost kev tape :

SURELY MERGING IS ROUGH ENOUGH

Generic brand names, the saving grace of my soft drink addiction, and the scourge of fallow football. Whatever shall we do?

Ararat, a small city in the Victoria's Wimmera, has been the home to some of the grousest footy clubs nomenclatures ever devised. Such blinders as Caledonians, Prestige, Trinity and Methodists graced the local papers with tales of splendour on the paddock for much of the 1900s. Prompted by mines, churches and schools, these nom de plumes distinctly identified the teams as 'an Ararat team'. A myriad palette of top-notch creativity. Even when religion went out of fashion, there was still imagination involved, and Methodists became the Miners.

In light of this colourful history, why have these teams now merged into two bland outfits known as Ararat Eagles and Ararat United? How discouragement! Ararat is now bereft of excitement in the moniker arena. Where's the imagination gone?

The bee that's a-buzzin' in my bonnet concerns generic brad names of our beloved football clubs. Do you know how many Uniteds and Eagles there are out there, now? I'm not referring to decent, clean-livin', god-fearin' names such as Nyah-Nyah West United, which at least continues to clutch onto the original titles. I'm talking about the ones who have ditched all local reference in support of something that could be anywhere. The two Ararat clubs aren't even the worst examples, for they retain the name of the city that spawned them, at the very least.

Irrewillipe merged with Pirron Yallock, and called themselves Western Eagles. I'm looking, I'm still looking, yep I've got it. There's the two 'e's from Irrewillipe, I can see them now. Oh, there's the 'w', and one of the 'r's. What was wrong with Irrewillipe-Pirron Yallock, or even Irrewillipe Yallock, or Pirrowillipe. Give us something we can work with, here, will yers! Why kill the location off? This smacks of the same mentality which needed to change the name of VFL Park, simply because the league name had changed. Frankly, it ****s me. Can I say that here?

I have no idea what the point of generic brand names achieves, but I do know that I don't like it. So many team names are no longer represented, which, in struggling areas, must feel like a nail in the coffin for the community. Spare a thought for Bear's Lagoon. They actually have a football team, albeit as part of a joint venture with frigging Serpentine (I don't know why I said that, they just sound like a team that I'm meant to hate). Bear's Lagoon-Serpentine Football Club, reported almost all the time as Serpentine. If I came from Bear's Lagoon, I'd be somewhat shirty.

Redbank merged with Moonambel, and were called Redbank-Moonambel for a short time, but then reverted back to just Moonambel. Why didn't someone stand up to this bulldozing decision? No matter, Moonambel folded in the early eighties. Yeah, they got theirs.

There are still some decent names running around. Devon-Welshpool-Won Wron-Woodside would have to be the crowning achievement. Someone changed them to 'East Coast Allies' once, but popular opinion eventually won through, and things were soon back on par. If its too long to print a score in the paper, use a bloody acronym, for cryin' out loud.

There are too few surviving clubs as it is, yet there seems to be a current need to erase the names of those that were. The noggins responsible for this historicide ought to be brought to immediate justice.

And bring back the Calebloodydonians.
 
A couple of big ones include :

Tempy-Gorya-Patchewollock (they've since merged AGAIN).
Chinkapook-Manangatang (the Chinkapook name has since been dropped)
Devon-Welshpool-Won Wron-Woodside (say THAT five times real fast!)

Interesting article Mobb, i used to play against Prestige, Trinity, the Celedonians, St Mary's and the Miners as little as 10-12 years ago in the Ararat District League, which folded in 1999..
They soon later became Prestige-Trinity and Caleys-Miners (or United).
Then shortly after they all joined to become the eagles, not sure if StMary's joined Prestige-Trinity for a while before all five joined, think so??

It's sad that a town that as little as 10 years ago supported 6 or more sides, now only has 2.. And the eagles have still been struggling!! Not sure if the loss of identity has caused a decrease in the passion for the NEW club but surely, and hopefully, they can become a strong football club in their own right and that some of the history remains also!!
