Toast Welcome Judd McVee

Jeez the guy's a smooth mover! He has a bloody tidy kick on him as well -- I'm impressed!!

I also note that in his highlights package, he attended at least one centre bounce (which forever more is now the Centre toss -- and geez that sounds wrong. But then again every umpire on the ground is also now -- technically speaking -- an even bigger tosser than they were last year.... so I suppose that makes a certain sense. 🤷🏻

But I digress...).

Anyhoo, like I said, he attended a centre bounce in that highlights package nd won at least one clearance while playing as a mid!

Now isn't THAT a handy little second skillset to have running around the ground (at high speed!) and quietly lurking away in the background on the backline. 😎😎

Welcome aboard son... look forward to seeing you out there.

On this trade, he's given up pick 33 to WC for free. Its up there
You don't think 33 was needed with 12 to secure 19 and 23? 12 and 33 for 19 and 23 is good enough I think, depending on who we want of course. So there is a lot of angst about the 44 and 50 for 46 deal it seems. We probably needed a bit more to get the 19 and 23 deal over the line, and 44 and 50 added with 46 coming back got it done. Weak draft, unpredictable where players will be taken, plus we traded in the player we wanted at a price most think is fair (I don't really know McVee yet, but he looks and sounds great). The deal doesn't seem an issue to me.

Historically, no, 33 should not be needed to turn 12 into 19 and 23.

The simplest way to show why the trade is bad is that WC paid less than 23 for Starcevich and Brisbane got more than 23 for him. Freo footed the bill for the difference

I think we did the best business - young talented player in a position of need yet to hit his peak that we paid the value agreed to between the two clubs. Went out and got the deal done.
Starcevich trade is risk personified for both clubs. Great player, certainly worth more than McVee ordinarily - but, risky for WC due to concussion history and risky for Brisbane due to his importance to their side. Without him, Danger may have exerted himself on the GF as he did in the prelim, but Starcevich totally nullified him.

The trade for McVee is entirely separate to the pick swap. To say I disagree would be an understatement but I've complained and explained enough for the last 24 hours and need to give it a break for my own sanity.

Appreciate the civility though, I'm excited to hopefully watch McVee, Simpson and Clark move it out of our backline next year

True - been a marathon just trying to read it all! Excited to see him rip it up next year too. I wonder what the plans for Simpson are now? We still need that wing position firing...

We rated him highly and did the deal without selling the fam in a very underwhelming draft

We get the player Who fits our list profile really well and move on

Some posters need to chill
No one is arguing the McVee part of it all. It's the fact we had the highest pick in the trade and downgraded but walked away with less points than we started with. Was piss poor asset management.

It should have been us getting something extra, not us giving up 33 and the other 2 picks

I have a feeling Walls doesn't rate this draft. He's the expert not us.

It doesn’t matter if he rates it or not. You don’t give assets away for free.

On topic, starting to feel buoyed by this acquisition. Right in the age group for our squad, big chance to improve significantly.

Ticks all the boxes in terms of skill and dash.

Who cares though?
I just dont understand this position, its a competitive professional sporting competition. One where several other clubs get natural list building advantages.

Every asset should be maximised. Its mind boggling to me people think throwing away a top 40 pick is not important.

Even if Walls doesn't rate the draft it is irrelevant. We bent over to help rivals. 12 should have been enough to get 19 and 23. If West Coast did this trade we would all be laughing at them. Even 33 and a future second might have got us 23.

Very happy to have this kid though, looks very good

I tend to look at the overall picture with Wallsy and what we end up with at the end of trade and draft, irrespective of how we get there. But that was an awful trade

I don't think you can be content with the trade for McVee and dislike the trade required to get the pick for it. If Melbourne want #33 we don't make the trade. We moved #33 into #23 for all it cost to do so Melbourne would be happy to trade McVee.

Now what's the value for this for Freo? Loosely, maybe, player managers have a sense of a deal on offer from Freo is the real thing and they get the trade done to bring in the known player so comparing two close deals doesn't have the negativity associated with an expectation of the club being hard to deal with and maybe it won't happen - which by the time it falls through your second and third option has moved onto other targets.

The trade was crap. The reason for the trade was Melbourne wanting more for their uncontracted player than our second round pick and Freo went and helped them out to get them what they wanted.

I don't think other clubs are doing that for us.

McVee will make us look better, straight up our ball movement and make the rest of the transition game more dangerous.

Shouting friends is a little different to shouting the Eagles and reigning premiers mate...

Eagles seriously need some help. They remind me of the once rich businessman who went bankrupt and instead of picking himself up he ended up sleeping under the bridge with a cheap bottle of liquor and never recovering.

Look at us as the Smith Foundation for a fellow AFL club.
