An intriguing choice, this one. Age 21. Had to lose 16kg last pre-season. Has a good surname though!

Just realised I wanted us to take him with a late pick 3 years ago. I remember his highlights video, even as an overweight kid, he was able to kick goals from anywhere. Good to see he got himself into shape. The fact that he spent time in Perth is also a huge positive. He went to Clontarf College over here and also played for South Freo.

Article about him from 2013:

The Clontarf College student has terrific football bloodlines with the Rioli name being synonymous with Northern Territory football

In between his commitments with the Northern Territory side, Rioli played colts and reserves football for WAFL club South Fremantle.

In three reserves games for the Bulldogs he kicked 10.3 and was pushing for senior selection with five goals already to his name before injuring himself during the third quarter of his last reserves game.

After the U18 Championships he returned to Western Australia to play eight games in the colts for a return of 27.5.

“I enjoyed my time in Perth and enjoyed the footy season,” he said.

“The school treated me well and South Fremantle are a good club.”

This bloke is a jet. Easily as talented as the other Riolis that have played AFL before him, but obviously weight and body shape issues have prevented him from getting an opportunity earlier. I'd be surprised if he didn't make an impact at the Eagles.

I interviewed him last week for my radio show, take a listen if you're interested.

HARD WORK TO PAY OFF FOR TALENTED RIOLI:

BY - JACKSON CLARK (Twitter - @JClark182)

There has never been any question marks about William Rioli’s natural talent.

It takes a rare ability to kick 50-plus goals, including a five-goal Chaney Medal winning performance, as a 17-year-old for St Marys in the NTFL.

But Rioli’s biggest knock from recruiters was always concerning his body shape and fitness.

But now Rioli is 21 years old and is a much more matured footballer after spending the last two seasons with SANFL club Glenelg.

“When I was playing in the NTFL, my weight was a big issue, that’s why I wanted to go to Adelaide to get my body right at play at the second highest level.” Rioli said on Mix 104.9’s Balls ‘n’ All with Jacko.

“I wanted to challenge myself in another league to further my football, and I knew my stay in Adelaide wouldn’t be long if I didn’t get my body and fitness right.”

Over the past two seasons, Rioli has proven himself as one of the most exciting young prospects in the SANFL.

He turned heads with a four-goal performance in the SANFL state game against the VFL representative side.

Rioli said that watching family members, Cyril and Daniel, play good football in the AFL has made him even hungrier to join them at the top level.

“It definitely makes me more hungry (watching Cyril and Daniel).

“I’ve also seen a lot of good mates make it and it has made me push a lot harder in the SANFL.

“I got a program off the fitness coach in Adelaide and I have been doing a lot of running there and back home.

“I haven’t stopped running since the season has ended.”

Losing 16kg is both good and bad

Shows that he can put on weight if he doesn't look after himself but have to applaud the commitment to get himself right

Will probably have more work to do yet before he reaches AFL level fitness but I'm stoked we've finally rolled the dice with a player like this. A very uneagles like selection. Good to see the recruiters stepping out of their comfort zone

Really intriguing pick, definitely meets our needs for a crumbing forward and as a mature ager can put pressure on someone like Hill and or LeCras straight away.

Really hope we get more of a Cyril and not a Dean Rioli who talented as he was always looked and played like he was carrying excess weight.
