Im not a big fan of starting threads and bagging blokes

I will say this now unless he changes his attitude on the field he will not make it i have never seen him at training so i dont no what he is like (would love for someone to tell me) but his a alot like Egan in a match very very lazy

Does not chase does not run into space wont follow his man to the backline and just has no sence of urgency

I have picked up on this last couple games i have watched live at the game but he was our worst by a mile on Friday night

Would love to hear what other people think the kids got skill but he needs to pull his finger out

true, true to quote a famous Kazakhstani he was as loose as a sleeve of a wizard on friday night.
definitely not the answer to our "run with" player prayers!

So much like Egan it was scary he has the ability but just seems to me that he doesnt want it enough

Very tough on young Wellingham.

I see him very much in the Daniel Kerr mould.

He is NOT like Egan.

His attack on the ball and the man is ferocious. The boy will go when it is his turn and put his head over the footy too.

Very difficult for ANY player in the competition to come in and tag anyone as great as Gary Ablett.

Lets not forget, you just don't know what you are going to get from kids. Sometimes they'll be up, sometimes down. It is the beauty of youth.

Personally, I don't see him as a tagger or shut-down player. He is far better than this. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he should be given licence to be a ball player. Hunt the ball, not the man.

He just has the rare ability to play both inside and out.

Patience. He is definitely within our best 25.

I didnt like what I saw in the GF last week, but he was thrown into the deep end on the leagues best midfielder.

I see him as a more attacking option, although players like Dick, Sidebottom and Beams may find they are preferred as they will all be able to play midfield as well.

Wellingham has talent, but unless he proves himself this year, he may be one of the 3-4 mandatory players who are delisted at the end of the year.

Ok F.E but Daniel Kerr is one of the leagues hardest runners only time Wellingham wants to run is if where moving into our forward line he just wouldnt lay sheppards lead anything this is the worst game i have seen him in he has played some good ones but last few times i have seen him seems to me to be very lazy

I think at times fans can mistake a laconic playing style and nature for laziness and a lack of willingness.. Wellingham is a guy that shows very little emotion and seems to be a naturally cruisy type of player. I don't know the guy, and i'm not at the club to know for sure, but i suspect any issues related to work ethic will be overrated because of things his can't really change.

He needs to start pumping weights in the gym. Very skinny and weak in the upper body right now.

I think he was great last year! Maybe he's having a slow pre season.

Don't forget he played some absolute blinders last year in a ball-winning capacity. But let's be honest, not as talented as Egan but has shown much, much more.

Pluses: composed with ball, good user, can find the pill, good in traffic, goalkicker.

Minuses: gets knocked off packs (or not near 'em enough), in and out of games, one-dimensional.

Verdict: still 50/50. I don't think he'll get the chances some players are granted, so he'd want to take his quick and learn to adapt to the roles he's been given. Defenitely a keeper, even if he has a downer this year.

Has 12 career games to his credit. I think this thread is a tad premature, after a game in which the entire team was comprehensively obliterated.

I agree 100%.
We are getting to the stage now we are writing off
very young players with very little experience on the strength of one or two games.
Half our squad could fall into this category.

We have to try and keep at least a modicum of perspective.

Bucks made a good comment on him during the game, basically saying that at the stoppage when he left Ablett to hunt the ball he really didn't commit to getting the ball. So the ball spills and Ablett gets an easy receive out the side. Bad play.

I'm hoping that the NAB GF drummed a few hard lessons in his head. I'd like to think that chasing around mids like Ablett and Bartel that he would have picked a few tips on how to go about it.

Definitely nothing like Egan..
Has the potential to be a great midfielder, Lets not forget last week he played a tagging role on the best midfielder in the competition.

I will admit though he was been down the last few games, his young and maybe his attitude isnt the best.

Im pretty confident he will make it as an AFL footballer if given the opportunities.

Too often plays like a millionaire imo. Obvioulsy has talent so I hope he makes it, but from afar he looks lazy at times and a bit like a guy who thinks he's already accomplished far more than he actually has.

I would not take too much out of the NAB Cup Grand Final.
He was on Ablett, yet he played him as though Ablett had a serious case of BO.:D He was about 20 metres away from him when the ball was bounced in the centre.
The only reason I see this being so is if the players were instructed to play a certain style.
He hammered Ablett last year when we beat them.
Wellingham had 5 tackles in the first quarter and was one of the catalysts in the win.
If he played in a home and away game like he did on GF, then I would be worried, otherwise don't judge him yet.
Wait for the real deal to start and start making judgments.
NAB Cup games are just glorified practice games.

He reminds me more of Julian Rowe than Chris Egan.. ;)

Seriously though I still think he'll make it. Not currently in our best 22 but it's up to the coaching staff to push him to get there, he has the ability. Is a handy depth player currently but I want him to really want it and destroy the VFL to earn his spot.

unlike Egan we got Wellingham for next to nothing, so its not like the recruiters made a mistake by picking him up, infact any player who comes off the rookie list within a year or 2 should be seen as a success!
I think he might make it as run with player but if not its no huge loss...

i think Wellingham moves and is composed alot like Pendlebury actually. Looks like he isnt running hard, looks to be slowly cruising around the packs. only diffreence is, Pendles is more effective (which you would expect).

1 problem with judging Wellingham now is that he has been given a number of different roles. its a little harsh to cut into someone until they are established in their role and not doing it. eg. We dont cut into Stanley when he is rubbish cos he is played everywhere except his position.
