I'm not sure I've seen a toast on this one on our board, so here goes.

Well done Sharrod Wellingham, for not just tackles as stats, but ones that completely crunched the opponent, and set a clear intent.

It won't be long before he gets his silky game going again after his suspension, but until then, it's good to know that he's getting the basics of providing a very hard contest spot on.

Just as Beams and Sidebottom took steps to share the load, I saw Wellingham do the same yesterday, not so much in the offensive line, but in his tackling and pressure on the ball.

Great work Sheriff.

He is def a hard nut, despite his general appearance suggesting otherwise.

He has a lot going for him and is a great over head grab for a mid. Will be a key for our success this year imo.

Wellingham always strikes me as a kind of 'barometer' for our team.

When he's on, we're on and vice versa ( though to a lesser extent)

He absolutely led the way with pressure acts, 1%ers yesterday.

That early season club suspension looks to have had the desired effect, as he busted his gut in the twos on the way back and was fantastic again yesterday.

Interesting that in his two games back he's played more up forward then I would have expected, but his defensive work has been first class, and not just his tackling.

He overall pressure, even in marking contests has been great, and I'm sure internally the club would have rated him highly in both games he's played this year.

Hopefully the suspension will be the catalyst for his best year yet.:thumbsu:

I agree that he's often our barometer.

He is the x-factor for our midfield. He can play games where he sets the world on fire, he does some ridiculously good things around the stoppages at times, some freak goals out of nothing and some brilliant inside work. He'll be even more important now that Ball is gone. Hopefully that added responsibility will bring out his best. (like it did against Melbourne last year)

That intensity that he showed yesterday, if he can find that on a more consistent level throughout the season we will start to see the very best out of Sharrod.

Yeah I've erased from memory the Carlton game too... Wellingham might have got a rocket like the rest of the club from that match because it's been all systems go since.

So have I, I don't count that game as ever happening, and will never refer to it ever again.

Can go missing in some games but the good thing is that he'll never have a game where he's been a liability. A bad game for him is like 15 possessions, but those 15 possessions will still be class.

"I'm playing the majority forward now, which is a really good role and I'm liking it and enjoying being out on the paddock.

"It's the structure we've decided to go with. We've got a really strong midfield at the moment and I'll be playing a role as a bit more of a forward this year."

Interesting Wellers confirms that he'll be playing more forward this year. Whether it's out of necessity or not, I like the move. It appears he and Beams/Sidey have swapped roles.

On 3 or 4 occasion he pounced and brought to ground a player just about to break clear from a stoppage - it was outstanding and almost seemed that he was hanging off the stoppage specifically for this purpose.

As much as we will miss Luke Ball it's clear that we have been forced to look at achieving far more flexibility in our midfield including new and varied roles.
This will increase our overall versatility and make us far more unpredictable to our opponents.

..yeah didn't notice. Although he played well against Bombers, but then again, he's being in the side so many yr's that it is time he went full potential.

The old man LOVED his game on ANZAC Day. Didn't find much of the ball but his tackling and pressure was fantastic. Absolutely smashed a few tackles on and looks super fit to me (maybe the tan makes him look quicker).

Don't mind him playing on the HFF but I hope he does continue to spend brief periods in the centre. Can't help but think how much the midfielders like Swan and Pendles would benefit from the hard hitting.

To be honest he was ok but i think he could be so much better.

I still believe he could be one player we lose with our salary cap issues. Although i seriously hope we can somehow keep him
