Welshy out again

Is that definite ? The Advertiser says that he started training last night with Robbie Carruthers but joined the main group and should play.

If he is out it will hurt us as his forward line pressure has definitely resulted in goals for us.

Crows ready to line up against Voss
By Emma Quayle
Adelaide
September 11 2003

Adelaide will leave for Brisbane this morning anticipating a Lions side that includes Michael Voss.

While coach Leigh Matthews all but ruled the Brisbane captain out on Monday, saying that the short training week would not allow Voss's deteriorating knee time to recover for the semi-final, Adelaide defender Ben Hart said the Crows would not be fooled into plotting their approach to the game around his absence.

Hart said the Lions, more than any other team, could capably replace injured players, although a casualty list that also includes premiership players Chris Scott, Brad Scott, Clark Keating, Beau McDonald, Craig McRae, Aaron Shattock and the suspended Tim Notting had left them somewhat vulnerable.

"I suppose they are. But as far as we're concerned, at this stage Voss is still playing and (Chris) Scott's playing," he said.

"Even though there's been a bit of talk around about how they've got all these injuries, they've still got a fantastic side and I don't think it's as bad as what everyone's making out.

"We'll go up there expecting a pretty tough encounter and at this stage those two guys are probably going to be playing, as far as we're concerned.

"We're getting some confidence back, we're getting some players back in form and they may have a few injury problems but at the same time they're a very strong group up there and very hard to beat no matter who plays."

The Crows were expected to fly their 25-player squad to Brisbane this morning, with none of the emergencies required back in Adelaide for SANFL duties until Sunday.

Forward Graham Johncock and defender Ken McGregor, late withdrawals against West Coast on Saturday with a hamstring strain and the flu, respectively, both trained strongly yesterday.

Scott Welsh looked proppier on his injured ankle and spent time away from the main group, but still finished the session.

Hart expected McGregor would pitch himself back into an immediate dual with regular opponent Jonathan Brown, and predicted the Crows had several potential opponents for the equally dangerous Alastair Lynch.

Lynch kicked seven goals on full-back Nathan Bassett when the teams last met in round nine.

"Nathan Bassett, in my opinion, played very well on him, but he doesn't need many opportunities to kick goals," he said.

"He's just one of a number of players up there who's fantastic for them and can win matches for them, so one of the things we'll probably have to do is try to stop the supply to him as well.

"He's one of the strongest players in the AFL so that's always going to be pretty hard.

"Nigel Smart has done the job before and done well.

"Occasionally we've used Rhett Biglands in that role as well, so they're a couple of options and I think Nathan (was) unlucky to get seven kicked on him last time we played.

"There's a number of guys who could do it but the back line also has got to help each other out and put the pressure on, leave their man and help whoever is his direct opponent.

"But also the midfield can help out with their pressure."

Having completed a trying end to the season with three consecutive home games, Hart said the Crows were ready to take themselves on the road once more.

"We travelled to Perth twice in the last half of the season so to have the last couple at home is good. It just settles things down," he said.

"The intensity of the games obviously was pretty tough, but that aside we haven't had to travel.

"But travelling holds no fears for us, either. We have a good routine, we enjoy getting away and it's a fantastic time to be playing footy, so that's the way we're going about it."

If Welshy is not near 100%, then we should rest him. Better off playing a fit player IMO with Stiffy returning this week.

Agreed

Its going to be Welsh or Perrie to play anyway and I think Perrie is more versatile.

In any case we will have a very strong side and will have no excuses if we lose.

He hasn't travelled to Brisbane

AN ANKLE injury will keep Adelaide forward Scott Welsh out of tomorrow night's AFL semi-final with Brisbane at the 'Gabba.

Welsh, who sustained a bruised ankle in Adelaide's elimination final triumph over West Coast, was not among the 25 Crows players who flew to Brisbane today.

The Crows have replaced him with utility James Begley.

Meanwhile, Adelaide coach Gary Ayres said he is cautious about reports that Brisbane will be missing some key players, including captain Michael Voss, tomorrow night.

Ayres said he will not trust the side which Brisbane announces later today.

This means that last weeks team minus Welsh plus Begley McGregor Johncock and one other will have travelled.

No, but when the Lions shut down Carey and Stevens, he is the next go to man.

or Burton can be thrown up there

Last time

Smart Stevens Carey Burton Shirley Massie did not play.

Burns got injured in the first half also.

Crowell Doughty Ladhams Begley and Mattner did.

A much improved side.

Easily replaced. I don't think he's been a major contributor in recent weeks anyway.
Gee I wouldn't say he is easily replaced. He is one of our best forwards. If Welshy doesn't play then I would expect Perrie to come in for him and we will play 3 talls in our attacks. Who would Brisbane play in defence on the extra tall????

Would White have the strength to go with Perrie and is it worth playing Pike back there and taking away his run from the wing????

Massive loss...

I reckon Welshy would be arguably one of our most important players in determining the difference between victory and defeat.

I'd like to see our win/loss record with and without him.

Guys, I see Welsh as an important part of our forward line, but to me he just hasn't contributed enough this year. Where's the early 2002 like consistency gone? Perhaps he's still hampered by those injuries of the last 18 months. Whatever it is, he hasn't had enough impact this year. With Welsh's form being so indifferent this year, I just feel that with him taken out we're not losing a lot.

If we play a three pronged tall forward line, I would expect Bradshaw to play in defence.

Our forward line pressure seems much better with Welshy in the side. This was evident last week again. It is citical the other guys such as Stiffy, Ronnie & Edwards pick up the slack & try their damnest to keep the ball inside out forward 50m, or pressure the Lions backmen when bringing the ball out of defence. If the like of Johnson are given time to deliver the ball, they will cut us up.

A reliable source informs me that James Begley will be taking Welshy's spot Friday night. Unless you already knew that....

They're not named that way, although I guess they could pull a late replacement for Perrie, with Begley on a wing and Burton up forward.

Don't think so though.

Begley replaced Welsh in the 25.

So he was the last player picked. Which means the other two emergencies are higher in the pecking order and would sooner come in.

Would have thought Begley would be the last of our emergencies to get chosen if a player were injured. Reilly would come in if there were a last minute change, then I reckon Ladhams would be next in the queue.
