Points Matching- How to Calculate:

Picks 1-18: Points value of pick less 10% discount
Picks 19-36: Points value of pick less 84 points discount
Picks 37+ : Next available pick

From the points required deduct the value of the next available pick and repeat until the total of the picks used exceeds the value required. The value of the surplus is then used to add back the pick closest to that value

For example a bid at pick 2 for Uwland:
• Pick 2 = 2481 points less 10% means 2233 points are needed to match
• Gold Coast have picks 15 (973), 18 (836), 24 (621) totalling 2430 points
• There is a surplus of 197 points which is equivalent to pick 43 (184 points)
• So to match, Gold Coast lose picks 15,18,24 and gain pick 43

I'll take Isaac Waller my Academy kid as Mr Irrelevant.

SNAPSHOT: “A towering tall talent who attacks the aerial ball with vigour and possesses strong ruck craft.” – Michael Alvaro

Isaac Waller quite literally stands above the rest in this year’s draft crop. The 204cm man mountain is among the many Queensland prospects vying for higher honours, doing so via the Brisbane Lions Academy. Having been part of the program since he was 12-years-old, he could potentially join the fast-growing list of Academy graduates to make the step up to AFL level.

After a clean run throughout preseason, including time with the Allies squad, Waller got going in the Academy Series and played out his second full Coates Talent League stint. His form was enough to warrant selection in the first National Championships game among a raft of fellow talls, and Waller did more than enough to keep his spot throughout the carnival.

Post-champs, the developing big man was afforded a VFL debut in Lions colours. He also made his maiden senior appearances with Maroochydore and played out the season at QAFL level, ending in an elimination final loss. Waller has family ties in Victoria and claims not to support an AFL club, but rather takes aspects from different top level players like Tim English.

After the top ten, my strategy was dictated by two beliefs that turned out to be erroneous:
  • Richmond only had one more live pick/list spot (I blame Keys for that)
  • Richmond had committed to take Louis Kellaway as a father-son (that one’s on me)

Due to that, I elected to trade my pick in the 30s out to Brisbane (who wanted to get back into the draft after matching the Annable bid) for a future pick, and move my sole live pick back to the end of the draft in the belief no one would bid on Kellaway. (I also refrained from mentioning his name, just in case it gave anyone ideas).

When that pick rolled around I was kicking myself a bit, because three players I would have taken in a heartbeat were all still on the board - Holmes, BOB and Kickett. Two of the three went shortly afterwards but Kickett was still there at the end, so having done some research and found out Richmond hadn’t actually given Kellaway any guarantees, I pounced.

So I’m quite happy with how it panned out in the end, I got two players I think would be great fits for Richmond inside the top 10, Kickett late and managed to get them an extra second-rounder next year. And Kellaway can be picked up in the rookie draft.

The only downside is I didn’t pick any midfielders (must be the West Coast influence on me) but they do effectively have a new mid this year in Smillie, assuming he can get on the park, along with Hotton and Lalor (and Kellaway as a project) so in the immortal words of Mr Kruger … “I’m not too worried about it”
