Prior to this year he's been small and slow.

This year he's still small and slow but Yeo is fit and we've got harley too
Serious? Other mids+forwards are going in+out, getting a taste of AFL, not connected with Yeo+Harley. So they're all fast and tall? Don't think so.
Ledwards, Sheed, Brockman, Dewar, Johnston, Hall+Culley get a mention.
Sheed is not fast but experienced. Ledwards not fast.
Just genuinely want to know what the knock on him is?

He was excellent - he's ready for the firsts. Get him in there for midfield support instead of Sheed.

Would like to see Trew with a reasonable midfield around him instead of the ‘second stringers’ of the past. Be a better indicator of his potential future.

Trew unfortunately has had some rotten luck.
When there's been opportunity early in his career he didn't grab his opportunity.
Then when we had injuries all over the place and there was ample opportunity he was chronically injured, bad back, hamstrings, shin splints.
Now his playing well we have a solid set midfield in the position he'd want to play.

Who of Reid, Ginbey, Yeo, Kelly are you taking out to put Trew in?

Unfortunately Trew is likely to just end up as depth and probably delisted to make way for fresh talent.

Short answer, he's not good enough. He had 9 touches in a full game of AFL last year. Then subbed off in his 3 other games with 7, 11 and 9 touches.

It's a big step up going from WAFL to to AFL level and Trew hasn't seized his opportunity when given the chance.

I'm all about rewarding WAFL form though, he's been one of the most solid and consistent performers for the Beagles.

Get him in next week. Deserves another crack.

That short answer is a lazy answer.

Last year we were totally crap at AFL level as we all know. Injuries and players coming in were not fit nor ready. Multiple players every week would not have been playing under normal circumstances but we had no option.

Trew had been struggling with lower back issues and so he likely wasn't fit enough or had AFL level conditioning to play in normal years. But we were forced to play kids who werent ready.

Only way to find out if a kid is good enough is for them to get fit enough to play at the level and also have a half decent side to play alongside with. Trew and the other kids had none of that for 2022 and 2023. Thats why they didnt perform at their best.

For the second time this season the WAFL Eagles have tasted victory, recording a 21-point win over Claremont at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday.
The back-and-forth contest was met with some severe rainfall in the second and third term, but it didn’t dampen the Eagles’ spirits, who held off the Tigers for the 13.10 (88) v 9.13 (67) win.
Exciting new West Coast ruckman Matt Flynn made his league debut, his first game back from a tendon injury sustained in the pre-season, and he brought an important presence around the ground.
Acting captain Trey Ruscoe opened the scoring for the Eagles early in the first term, before Claremont showed some fight with back-to-back goals through Alec Waterman and Bailey Rogers.
The Tigers were circling the Eagles and winning at the contest, before West Coast found their spark and kicked five unanswered goals to take a 22-point lead into quarter time.

Harvey Johnston and Zane Trew
Ethan Sambo kept the ball rolling for the Eagles in the second term, kicking back-to-back majors, one following a pivotal tackle inside 50 in which he was awarded the free kick, and the second on the back of a huge flying pack mark taken 30 metres out from goal.
Ruscoe summoned some magic from the pocket with a crafty soccer goal, his second for the game, and the Eagles eighth-straight, while Claremont were kept goalless for the quarter.
Harry Edwards, Andrew Gaff and Zane Trew were equal-leading possession getters at the main break, with the Eagles holding a significant 36-point lead at the half.
The Tigers flipped the script in the third quarter, their first goal since the first term coming off the boot of Alexander Manuel.
West Coast had no response for Claremont’s onslaught of pressure, the Tigers kicking five unanswered majors and holding the home side goalless, reducing the margin to just eight points going into the final term.
The fourth quarter had shaped up to be a beauty, Loch Rawlinson broke the Eagles’ scoreboard drought with a handy early goal, giving the boys in blue and gold a little breathing room.
Both teams looked sharp, putting their bodies on the line and striving for the victory, Claremont managing to bring the margin back to within just four points.

Shannon Lucassen
Clutch back-to-back goals from star Eagles forward Shannon Lucassen gave the Eagles belief, before Tyler Brockman kicked his first goal in his first league game, and his first in the blue and gold, to lock in the win.
Trew starred for the Eagles with a game-high 36 disposals, seven marks and four tackles, while Gaff finished with 34 touches and six inside 50s.
Edwards was huge for West Coast down back, complimented by Jason Gillbee, and Luke Yeo (cousin of West Coast star Elliot Yeo) impressed in his first league game with a team-high eight tackles.

Happy that Trew is putting up decent numbers and playing well in the WAFL. Realistically the only spot he could take, unless there is an injury is Sheed's. But I would prefer if Dom's form warranted him going back to the twos, Culley to be the next in. Is putting up some nice numbers in the WAFL for 3 or 4 weeks in a row and has more upside than Trew.

Regardless, without watching a second of the game, it looks as though the boys went well and now remarkably after 8 rounds only sit a game outside the top 5 (and a lot of percentage)

Some nice numbers and good to read that Burgiel finished the games well when it was on the line and that Archer Reid continues to impress. Was nice to see him towering over Coen Livingston in the team song.

Does culley actually have more upside than trew?

Short answer is likely correct answer.
Trew has been good in WAFL.
Inside mid at AFL level, unsure. Have doubts.
Trew is fit now, I believe, so hopefully he busts up the WAFL properly and demands a place in seniors.
Wasn't that much of a standout today watching.
Great to have depth/pressure from 2nds, though
