you could leave him at coburg if he had kicked 6. but 8 goals. that is significant. if you want to send a message to the playing group that form at coburg will be rewarded you have to bring him up ESPECIALLY when we are crying out for a big goal square dominant forward. put him in, tell him to go for the ball, tell the team to kick it to him and leave him there for the whole game.

Keep him next year and bring him in this week.

This bloke will really show something if someone plays him in the right position for once!!!

With Lake needing to successfully appeal or miss the match, it looks more likely that he will go in, to exploit their defense. Morris will have to go to Schulz leaving players like Riewoldt open to cause havoc.

chronic underachiever has no trade value and should be delisted at yrs end.this wont happen though hes contracted for 2010. this is his 7th yr people how long do we persevere for. hes obviously got 34 games to show he belongs.

the trouble being atm we have no other options. to me plonk schulz at ff and make him stay at home. play both post and riewoldt. jack at chf and the mailman on a flank.

i dont like playing blokes for good structure but in this case it needs to happen. riewoldt and post will need the big body around to take some heat.

nahas as the small and morton as the medium. rotate cotchin cousins foley and deledio thru a pocket. this set up gives us height. size pace decent skills. i dont know how many have seen coburg but from what ive seen of post he is a nice mover with a lovely pair of hands. as said schulz is there to take the heat of jack and jayden and hopefully kick a few goals while hes at it.
structure people its all important along with footskills and smarts.

if you have good structure you are flexible you can go small if need be or go tall.
to me all of rance mcguane thursfield down back as the talls. kel moore as a running back who can play on a tall or a small his role should be running the lines as much as possible. hes close to the quickest player at the club. is good in the air has good foot skills except kicking at goal and can get his hands on the ball when the urge takes him. moore as a flanker gives you flexability you lose nothing in the run dept by playing him as a running defender.
newman and tambling should make up the backline. so in effect 4 talls 3 quickish running types and rance also who runs the lines well but kicking is a problem.
if angus graham is fit back into the ruck. his back up can be pattison atm even though i think him ordinary.

pretty good summation there santa. i think that setup would be as good as we can hope for.

maybe under the care taker coach he will get a run.
he doesn't play bad when he gets the call up yet he get dropped after a game then back up then drop he just needs to play the rest of the season in one postion

Wallace doesn't play him properly. I'm tempted just to leave him out this week, solely because one more shit return in the ones and it could be lights out. He probably won't play well this week under Wallace. Give him another week in the twos and if he plays well again, bring him in under caretaker.

A few of things about Jay Schulz:

- He is not a naturally 'smart' and natural footy player so using him in multiple roles does not work... he needs to settle into a defined role (best footy for Tigers was in 2008 as a defender... although I believe his 'best' position is at FF & from deep in the goal-square)

- He has NOT grasped the opportunity to establish himself... his fault for sure

- Mostly, when played forward he has been one of 2,3 or 4 leading forwards... all trying to present & decoy for each other. This will only work properly if your mid-field is on fire and has plenty of skill & time to make a decision & then deliver accurately.

- Schulz has either not been anointed or not been trusted to act as our prime forward target.

- His 4 "chances" this year included:
* a round 1 debacle where even the Tigers boot studder had a shocker
* a fairly good game against The Cats where he contributed significantly to our 3rd qtr revival
* round 3 & round 7 losses when in both cases the team was getting horribly overun by The Dogs & The Lions & our delivery into the forward line after the first qtr and a half was lousy (and he was still getting thrown around into different positions)

So... What do we do with Schulz?

Despite the above I believe he still has the ability to be a solid and valuable forward conveyance.

With our mid-field & runners looking better (Tambling of half back, Lids playing beautifuly, Cotchin in, Cousins fit, Coughlan will be back) we will be providing far better service to our forwards going ahead.

STRUCTURE.

Sarge deep out of the FF goal-square
Jack as a lead-up CHF
Brown & Morton as dangerous mid-sized forwards
Nahas & a resting mid make up the 6

Make sure there is space to lead into & deliver the ball quickly and accurately & have the mids recognise Schulz as the longer leading target & IMO he can deliver us an acceptable return.

Longer term we can look to perhaps Post or Gourdes or Vickery (or ????? from this years draft) but for now I can see no better option.

(It will also allow Hughes to play at FF for Coburg 1sts for a few weeks with instructions that he needs to peform & to push for senior selection or he will be 'steaming' back to Adelaide in September)

funny that people are saying he needs goalkicking practice. last time i checked the goals were the same distance apart in the vfl. 8 goals in a game is a fair return at any level. Im with roachy. bring him in, leave him at ff, make space for him, tell the team to look for him and kick it to his advantage. then leave him in the side for several weeks in this role win lose or draw.

Morton Riewoldt Cuz/Cotch/Collins
Rockin' Robbie Schulz Brown

is actually pretty alright. If everyone fires there's a bit of firepower there, plus a big body, tackling, class and work rate.

Apparently he wanted to go to Port Adelaide last year. He is frustrated by the game plan (or lack their of) that Wallace uses.

Given his size and lack of agility compared to a Nahas, Brown, Pettifer or Morton it would seem obvious to let him play deep and lead out to the ball being delivered quickly from the midfield. Every time the ball gets handballed sideways kicked backwards etc allows defenders time to fill the space. It's no great surprise Richo has reinvented himself since moving up the ground. He too was frustrated at the slow movment through the middle. Regardless of who it is in the key FF position the delivery is important.

Perfect examples of allowing a forward space and getting it in quick was the Blues to Fevola and Crows to Walker last weekend. Even Roughead and Buddy have struggled this year due to the slow movement into their zone.

Call it coincidence or whatever but the last three weeks at Coburg Riewoldt bagged six twice and Schulz eight and yes I understand the quality of the defenders in the VFL is different to AFL but if the ball is delivered then it gives the FF every chance.

I hope the caretaker and new coach introduce a game plan that gets the ball in quick and gives our forwards the best opportunity.

:thumbsu: Hope to see Schulz next week after the "tanned fellow" has cleaned out his desk.:p

Always disappoints when he plays in the firsts not up to it. Trade him at the end of the season.

We can't trade everyone. I guess you would rather keep some of the old chaps would you:o.

(As selfish and unlikely as it is :D) the worst case scenario should be to keep him on the list for a few more years as I don't want him going to another club and be given an opportunity and then have our noses rubbed in it.

I still hold a glimmer of hope for him under another coach

Totally agree with your post Roachy...He's never been left in that 1 position where he should've dominated by now....maybe coz all his years at tigerland they wanted him out of Richos way..so really was not given the time to develope there....I look at the Adelaide side now, with tippet and walker the coach plays them every week gives them a chance to take control of their positions even if they dont perform to a level, he plays them, they are showing improvement but most importantly even if they fail one or two weeks he will leave them there and give them the experience...

so you want to ruin his career? rather than trade him.
