Pretty much a spin off to the other 'what do you wear swimming thread', but there seems to be a lot of controversy on there about what people wear when they go cycling.

The MAMIL's out there (Middle Aged Med in Lycra) will advocate the advertising laden lycra to compliment their shaved legs, million dollar bikes and space age helmets. Fair enough to those who ride a lot and probably do greater distances and speeds. I do think however that a few take it a little too far.

Personally, I just wear sports shorts and a t-shirt. I cycle to and from work a few times a week, maybe the occasional charity bike hike or ride with mates. But wherever I go, just like for any other fitness activity I do, I make sure mother's milk is always close at hand:

Cyclists should wear Hi Vis vests with relective strips at all times.

I used to think drivers were arseholes who couldn't care less if they injure or kill a cyclist.

But after wearing a vest I realised most drivers are blind arseholes who lack the eyesight and driving ability to control a motor vehicle.

Road bike- Full lycra, gloves (type depends on the weather), carbon soled road shoes with cleats.

Mountain Bike - Mtb specific shorts, normal kind of just above the knee length shorts but a have padded liner short inside, mtb t-shirt that wicks sweat rather than a tee that weighs 3kg's once it gets soaked in sweat. mtb shoes with cleats. Mtb gloves, longfinger, padded and have kevlar palms. I fall off from time to time. Camelbak back pack.

There is a definite advantage to wearing lycra on a roadbike which I dont find necessary on a mountain bike.

When I ride I just try to stick to bike paths and footpaths, and I go out my way to avoid busy roads. I get so pissed off seeing cylclists blocking traffic on single lane roads when a perfectly good vacant footpath or bike path is right next to them. Particulary on busy single lane roads.

I ride a lot and have never had an incident.

Sure motorists are blind/aresholes/dumb/stupid/selfish blah blah blah...at the end of the day the mortality rate for cycliing on the road is very high. And roads are built for cars not cyclists. Cycling on the road is frikkin dangerous to both cyclists and motorists. So to the cylists going off at motorists for being stupid and using a road for its intended purposes - look at yourself first....

No amount of arguing and finger pointing can escape the fact the driving an exposed, fragile, relatively slow and often hard to see form of transportation on busy public roads is not a smart thing to do

shorts and a shitty tshirt, plus a cheap high-vis vest from bunnings when riding home at night. Might try and grab a hi-vis jacket for winter, though.

My biggest issue is footwear. Happy to ride in the rain, hate having wet shoes all day, can't really be bothered carting round 2 pairs of shoes
