What I Noticed About Post Today...

i thought post was good today. in the 3rd when they had a run on he took a few important marks and won some important ball at ground level saving a few goals. i think he just needs time to get suited to the speed and pressure of afl (playing in the vfl one week and the afl the next will not do this) and he will become more composed and less 'dumb'. look at rance and nahas for 'dumb' players that have now become smart and reliable after a good stretch of consistent games.

Disagree with your assessment on Rance. Petrie got away a few times because others were not working back. Had nothing to do with Rance whatsoever.
Spot on Tug. With all our injuries back there Rance is trying to defend 4 blokes. Doing an admiral job but **** he can't do it all. Post does need more time though. IMO Astbury will be better.

Because he has had to shoulder our entire defence all season, of course he feels the need to try and cover up other player's mistakes. if it means having to do the unselfish thing and give away a goal to his direct opponent in order to try and fix the mistakes made by others further upfield then.

This :thumbsu: Rance has come a long way this season, hence why this thread is a joke, Post needs time to develop just like Reiwoldt and Nahas and Vickery and Rance .... funny how all these guys were once heavily criticised on these boards only to see the "I'm sorry xxxx" thread. :o

Thankgod those on here arent responsible for our list management. It's players like Jackson, White, McGuane, Thursfield and Farmer that the microscope should be on. Let players like Post, Astbury & Griffiths develop first before making stupid judgement statements.

He was fine. Thought he went for his marks more than previous, chopped off a few kicks. Will go for more and more with more confidence. Still makes some errors and seems lost a bit but this can all come with experience and with experience comes confidence. He should've been playing most of the year in a development year. As mentioned already, playing McGuane over him was a waste of time. Post was in for 1 game as a forward out the next then back in as a forward/ruck then backman, etc. Was just silly. How can any youngster develop like that? He needed/needs a set role. Hopefully CHB is that.

He may not make but he needs time. People should learn from previous cases in Vickery and Rance. For Post my major concern is his lack of pace but maybe he compensate that with his contested marking, spoiling and reading of the play. We will see. Hopefully a big preseason and a big 2012.

Yes, and this.

lol he continues to make serious mistakes in the air and lacks judgement he still lacks physically in one on ones now i know that will get peoples backs up but it is what i see.
i also see the things he does well thru a game its obviously these things that win people over.

like a fair few other pundits i believe we should still be searching for that quality assured physical key defender.
we have had too many just plain scrappers over the yrs and it has got us nowhere.

in the air id take post anyday and he too has plenty to work on to get there.

Attack starts from defence....

Rance is now transitting from a "shut down, Kill the ball defender" to a "Win the ball, take the game on defender". If he succeds to becoming that player we are well on the way to having a top 4 defence, with grimes coming back as the "shut down, kill the ball defender".

I thought Post did ok.... was playing further up the ground then Rance wich makes his job more difficult.... To call him a Dumb footballer is Dumb.
Like I have said in the past Post lacks the confidence to take the game on.... he lacks very little in all other areas and supplies a strong contest when the ball is dispute.. Decision making will come with experience....

Good competition for spots over summer with Thursfield Astbury post and Mcguane all fighting it out....

I still think Astbury is a forward.....

Never been a huge fan of Post, and couldn't understand why people were so excited over him when he debuted. ("He's the next Richoooo!") He's always looked unsure and out of his depth in AFL, for mine. But he has the physical frame for it, and I think he's improved this year, so I hope he can step up next year.

I've never warmed to Post like some of you, and these threads give me a bit of a chuckle just to see MT rush to his defence, but I thought he was pretty bloody handy a couple of times in the last quarter. He clunked a pretty decent mark off a North rebound from defence and I breathed a sigh of relief that there wouldn't be another easy post to post goal. Shame it didn't happen more often.

He doesn't deserve this scrutiny. If we're going to dump tall defenders we get rid of McGuane and Thursty before Post, just because of age if nothing else. He deserves at least another year, he's winning me over...

This thread is a joke, just like the Vickery and Rance threads of the past 12-24 months. It makes me embarrassed to be associated with some of you when you are teeing off on our tall kids with next to know AFL experience. Wake up to yourselves and learn from past mistakes. Tall kids take time and deserve better from so called supporters.

Rance can't do it all, but the first thing he should be doing is checking his direct opponent. Rance cost us 3 goals yesterday by playing too loose. It was his worst game since round 8.

Playing loose or learning how to play like Scarlett?..... Rance has proven himself as a one on one defender that can shut down a player.... His next step is to become a more complete defender that can rebound hard and take the game on..... the days of being a one dimensional defender have long past.
For Rance to take the next step and become an elite player he needs to learn to read the play and play off his man... when the timing is right.

Maybe, I think he started as a run off defender and is only just learning now how to play lock down. He needs a few more solid seasons to perfect that first before he can go back to playing like Matty Scarlett. I agree that he does need to learn to read the play better to know when to run off. Yesterday he sucked at it however, and Petrie was loving it.

the fact is post has to get the best pre season fitness into him he can. cant run out a game to save himself. then we can judge whether he can play or not.

Rance just like Post need time to develop, but your bias against Rance is staggering, you actually want him to fail so you can big note to all that "I told you so".

If you actually stepped back for a moment and look at where Rance was 18 months ago to now you would actually realise he deserves some credit. All our young KPP need time to develop thats a no brainer and thats my point.

We have too many others on our list that should be given the boot, but players like Rance and Post should be given a fair crack before the negative posts start about them especially when its clear they have actually improved.

Geez how the tiger turn on their cubs! You cant be serious having a dig at Jayden today. He was solid as. You go on about his safe option kicking... hes a 6'6 kpp hes not expected to take the game on from the backline his job is to spoil and to get it into the hands of the running players (hence the short kicks in the backline). The other times you are abusing him for kicking it to the opposite rucks cant be scrutanised either they were both long down the line boundary kicks because the lack of run from the half forwards and wingman. You also cant blame him for those turnover goals when you say he leaves his opponent... its dimmas forward press that is making that happen and its catching every single defender out not just him!! You also mention second efforts.. i believe in the 3rd quarter the ball came in and bounced infront of him in a pack of 4 or 5 odd players he attacked in the hardest and 3 or 4 taps of it before disposing of it and having another crack. You call him a dumb footballer.... that is clearly the worst call ever as he has generally played loose man in defence for majority of his career, he can read it better than anyone in the air. Give the bloke a f***ing go seriously!

Spot on. Could not agree more.

Slept on it, grog has warn off, calling him a 'dumb footballer' is wrong, for that I'm sorry. I just got frustrated by those mistakes.

I still stand by my assessment of him, he can definitely improve on that though, and just like i stated in the OP, he needs more time and it's worth persevering with him.

:thumbsu:Happy to give him another year or two to consolidate a position ... too early a call to offload just as most were premature re Vickery and Rance.
Saying that, there hasn't been any particular piece of play or game that has made me sit up and think that he's anything other than ok.
Happy to be proven wrong but just limited appeal at this stage!

He's good in the air, and not little, and neat by foot. That's why he's worth hanging onto. He just needs to get that competitive streak up him like Tyrone has. As everyone has been saying, the C word is the key.

Rance was left to do way to much work yet again, close to the hardest working defender in the league.
Just wait and see how much better he will be in years to come then all the other young defenders in the league who the experts rate higher who are spoon fed with experienced players like Fletcher coming up as third man up to help them out and organising everyone where to go, unlike Rance who takes the oppositions best forward, more often then not has beaten them and has to get back to help the other defenders as well spending a lot of time telling people where they should be. Really noticed that a couple of weeks ago at the Sydney game when I was on level 3 behind the goals at the city end could hear his voice barking orders in the second and last quarter.

Posts last few games have reminded me of how Vickery and Rance played last year. Occassionally you would get a glimpse of what they were capable of and then they would do something that would have you second guessing yourself.

The big thing with Post heading into the preseason is he needs to get himself as fit as possible and show over summer that he wants the CHB position. With him playing there, Rance at FB and Grimes as the floating 3rd tall I reckon we've got 3 talls to build a backline around.
