If it is shorter and thinner I call it a jacket and if it is longer and thicker I call it a coat but is there an official difference between a jacket and a coat?

Ive always thought a coat is something you put on like to protect from the rain- and a jacket is like more dressy item, like you wear with jeans or to work.

Normally I distinguish them by length. Short = Jacket, Long = Coat.
The main difference is length. A jacket is only waist/hip length, coats are longer. Coats are also exclusively outerwear, jackets are often not (although they can be).

If you look into the history of Western clothing and English language, there really isn't a definitive answer to this question, although Caesar's answer is about as good as it gets.

By all means, continue to wear the look. It's a nice style and I do mean style as opposed to fashion. Depending on the occasion and location, odd jackets and jeans are very smart and even classy.
It's not dressy though.
