I’m always curious about what people do for work when not stuffing around on BF?

If you feel like sort of outlining what you do, feel free; what are the good parts what are the bad? is there money in it? Do you like it or dread it? I mean it’s not really my business but if you feel like posting something about your work that would be cool.

I took a few years out doing something different but I’m back for now as an investigator - I still occasionally do your TV type stuff where you caution a suspect for interview, chat up witnesses etc but mostly I’m used as an expert witness for requirements around this specific legislative framework and the data network that sits behind it. I taught myself this using google.

What do you do?

Yes I’m a miner. Currently a supervisor on a mine site delivering explosive services. I do 7 on 7 off and I love it. It was a career change after 25yrs in a corporate supply chain role as a senior manager where I was always “on”. I consider this my semi retirement

Me too.

When I was a student a mate asked me to house sit and water his pot plants. I should have realised earlier that the wording of the request was very deliberate.

Anyways, I don’t judge and I’d made a commitment, but after three days of being woken by weirdos pounding on the door and going “where’s Damo” I arranged a substitute

I’m glad.

I mostly love my job, but it’s unpredictable and can get very stressful. Might be my ego talking - it’s nice to do something you know you do really well, and my area is so specialised that there is literally nobody but me. The downside is that I get swamped with expectations and I’m a very slow learner on pushing back

One thing my corporate role taught me was diplomacy. I use it religiously now in an environment that traditionally hasn’t been accustomed to it (used to supervisors bellowing at workers)

My team appreciates me treating them as adults and I hold them accountable as adults. It’s been quite successful. I had some sceptics when I asked the business to move from the office to the literal coal face with some people saying I would get eaten alive. Quite the opposite so far

You’re lucky. Not everyone is a natural supervisor.

One of the things I have enjoyed about my job over the last decade is that I’m an “unattached” executive. Which means I’m a the level of someone who would otherwise be expected to lead a team, but for now at least they see enough value in paying for me to do the work I do without the usual burden of management. I’m grateful. I’m not great in the role and respect many of my colleagues who can coordinate, delegate etc.
