In 2003 i put No.12 on my guernsey. Ive now decided not to put a number on my new guernsey for obvious reasons
i think people worrying about after the player retires/leaves is dumb. that makes the number you have on your jersey even cooler, it's heritage. fancy having no.44 on an '07 jumper when he dominated, i'd kill to have that. or no.11 on an older jersey, that'd be sweet. at this point in time if i was going to get a number i'd get 23, 7, 10, 20 or 16.
im thinking of getting a number on the back of my 07 fitzroy guernsey but dont really no who to choose
what number do you wear and who was/is the player?
if you buy a jumper without a number, and then want to get a number, where do you go to get it done properly? so that the number looks official?
I got my son's number done at Struddies' on the northside near Harvey Norman on Old Northern Rd (turn left at the end of Stafford Rd). It was very professionally done. They have similar coloured numbers and they use a super hot machine to melt it on. You cannot iron these numbers on, it won't work, I think the machine melts it on at 180 degrees or something like that. Can't remember the cost either but it does look great.
The downside of getting your son to run around with his favourite player's number on his back are the questions people ask like "are you related to..(the player)". A bit embarrassing for me and I soon realised it must be even more embarrassing for the player. I asked the player and he was really good about it, said it was all right but kids usually wear their father's number on their jumper.
I haven't let my son wear this jumper in public again which is hard because he loves it so much. I'll never forget after he got the numbers signed, he woke up that night in his sleep calling for it. In the morning it was still clutched in his little hands. He would wear it all the time, barely letting me put it in the dirty clothes basket to get it washed. Will buy him another guernsey, this time with no number.
I wouldn't worry about what other people think. Wearing a players' number has never been exclusive to those related to a player. In Melbourne, you find that more kids have numbers on their jumper than those who don't.
When I was young for years I never had a number on my Fitzroy jumper, but in 93 I decided Alastair Lynch was the best so I got 11 on the back. When he left at the end of the season I ripped the second 1 off and honoured the great Paul Roos with my left of centre 1. When Roos left at the end of 94 my brother (Richmond fan) got a 0 added to the jumper as a surprise telling me that Jeff Hogg was going to have a great year and would be a legend of the club. With Hogg only having a couple of games in the first half of the season I ripped the 0 back off and followed Brad Boyd with number 1 for the next season and a half. When the merge happened I retired the jumper. In hindsight, I could have put the second 1 back on and honoured Alastair Lynch yet again.
The moral of this story is if you do chose a number stick with it!

First up, always buy your merch from the Lions official club store(s) - it's the only place where the profits go back to club.
Secondly, all club stores have their official AFL numbers that can be put on when you purchase - if you're not going instore to buy and the numbers option isn't available online (as it doesn't seem to be for you lot, or mine for that matter), ring up and place a phone order.
One of my bugbears is people who buy expensive merch from places like Rebel or the AFL Store (profits go into the competitive balance fund split amongst all clubs) and then get shitty numbers stuck on at a local sports store. It looks atrocious and your club doesn't benefit at all.
