what number do you have on the back of your guernsey?

I tend not to put numbers on any of my jerseys because I'd want to change it when a player retires/leaves but I'd find it too painful to do so at the same time!

My Lions jerseys have no numbers on them, my soccer jersey has no number because players tend to come and go too quickly, my NFL jersey has my surname and #87 for my birthyear and my NHL jersey has #87 Crosby, who's our skipper but I didn't have too much choice in that because my cousin got it for me in New York!

In 2003 i put No.12 on my guernsey. Ive now decided not to put a number on my new guernsey for obvious reasons

i think people worrying about after the player retires/leaves is dumb. that makes the number you have on your jersey even cooler, it's heritage. fancy having no.44 on an '07 jumper when he dominated, i'd kill to have that. or no.11 on an older jersey, that'd be sweet. at this point in time if i was going to get a number i'd get 23, 7, 10, 20 or 16.

I went with the theory that I stopped wearing numbers on my lions guernsey when I became older than the youngest player on the list. For the record I had #1 on my Fitzroy top since birth (Including my last Fitzroy guernsey which i had signed by Brad Boyd everytime i met him:D), #9 on my first BL (Go Boydy) and #8 on my 2nd (My name came from somewhere...).

At the moment I proudly wear any of my 5 BL guernseys with pride without a number.

I don't know if you follow other sports outside of the AFL (or Australia, for that matter) but I find it very frustrating having so many players come and go so regularly and it puts you off having a numbered guernsey.

I remember a few years back a guy by the name of Michael Ballack played for my soccer team, FC Bayern Munich, and I was seriously considering getting his number on my shirt amongst other things and, as soon as that thought popped into my head, he was packing his bags for Chelsea for more $$$.

I know this doesn't happen as often in the AFL but I still don't like the idea of getting burnt with Akermanis being a prime example.

im thinking of getting a number on the back of my 07 fitzroy guernsey but dont really no who to choose
what number do you wear and who was/is the player?

Just get 47 on thr back of your jumper now...........;)

Don't wear my jumpers too much, have bought plenty through the club via jumper auctions etc. I am too scared to wear them, imagine dropping the hot contents of a jam donut at the GABBA on the front of one of these rippers:eek:

Best buy ever was Matty Kennedy's jumper worn in the 1996 Preliminary final, the last game the Bears ever played. Paid a massive $30 for that one through the club. (Bet they wish they didn't sell them off at those prices now) My good wife wore it to the Grand Finals, while I wore an old Fitzroy one. It was good luck until 2004:D

Also have Mitch Clark's dirty home jumper from his rookie year. Scott Harding's alternate # 45, Jason Roe's jumper from the great West Coast win in 2007 (was gunning for Luey's jumper for that game and got outbid in the last minutes when others suddenly realised it was his debut game as well:mad:), Bradd Dalziell's alternate Fitzroy style jumper from last year (inspired decision that one:thumbsu:) and of course I was the person who bought Joel Tippett's jumper from last year (no one had bid on it:eek:)

I love my jumpers:thumbsu:

i have 31 on the back of my jersey - from back in the 'ooga' days.
i had it signed on the back by him, and the 01 premiership side, and then signed by the 02 premiership side on the front.
it now sits proudly all framed up in my lounge - to me its priceless :)

I always put numbers on my guernseys. Get behind your favourite I say. If you get Akerized, it's time for a trip to the Lions store.

My favourite guernsey has a 3. Massive Sheldon fan :D

It's a 2001 guernsey I had signed by the whole team at training the week before the grand final. Gave it to my father for a birthday and it's mounted in his "pool room". Signatures on the front so you don't see Vossy's number, but it's there.

if you buy a jumper without a number, and then want to get a number, where do you go to get it done properly? so that the number looks official?

Go for the number Voss was given, if he becomes a successful coach, that gives you one more reason why your proud of wearing the jumper.

If that dosen't work, change it to 69 BABY.

I got my son's number done at Struddies' on the northside near Harvey Norman on Old Northern Rd (turn left at the end of Stafford Rd). It was very professionally done. They have similar coloured numbers and they use a super hot machine to melt it on. You cannot iron these numbers on, it won't work, I think the machine melts it on at 180 degrees or something like that. Can't remember the cost either but it does look great.

The downside of getting your son to run around with his favourite player's number on his back are the questions people ask like "are you related to..(the player)". A bit embarrassing for me and I soon realised it must be even more embarrassing for the player. I asked the player and he was really good about it, said it was all right but kids usually wear their father's number on their jumper.

I haven't let my son wear this jumper in public again which is hard because he loves it so much. I'll never forget after he got the numbers signed, he woke up that night in his sleep calling for it. In the morning it was still clutched in his little hands. He would wear it all the time, barely letting me put it in the dirty clothes basket to get it washed. Will buy him another guernsey, this time with no number.

I wouldn't worry about what other people think. Wearing a players' number has never been exclusive to those related to a player. In Melbourne, you find that more kids have numbers on their jumper than those who don't.

When I was young for years I never had a number on my Fitzroy jumper, but in 93 I decided Alastair Lynch was the best so I got 11 on the back. When he left at the end of the season I ripped the second 1 off and honoured the great Paul Roos with my left of centre 1. When Roos left at the end of 94 my brother (Richmond fan) got a 0 added to the jumper as a surprise telling me that Jeff Hogg was going to have a great year and would be a legend of the club. With Hogg only having a couple of games in the first half of the season I ripped the 0 back off and followed Brad Boyd with number 1 for the next season and a half. When the merge happened I retired the jumper. In hindsight, I could have put the second 1 back on and honoured Alastair Lynch yet again.

The moral of this story is if you do chose a number stick with it!

If you ask me, this should qualify as one of the posts of 2008.:thumbsu:

First up, always buy your merch from the Lions official club store(s) - it's the only place where the profits go back to club.

Secondly, all club stores have their official AFL numbers that can be put on when you purchase - if you're not going instore to buy and the numbers option isn't available online (as it doesn't seem to be for you lot, or mine for that matter), ring up and place a phone order.

One of my bugbears is people who buy expensive merch from places like Rebel or the AFL Store (profits go into the competitive balance fund split amongst all clubs) and then get shitty numbers stuck on at a local sports store. It looks atrocious and your club doesn't benefit at all.

I do buy my Lions gear from the official shop in order to support the Club but I didn't know that they can organise to put the numbers on the back of the guerneys. Good tip, there.
