Like everyone here, I hope we recruit the best possible talent from the draft (or from other clubs), but I'm not sure about what we are doing to develop, support and keep the talent we have at the club. I'm sure we are going to great lengths to find and recruit new talent but I think we should be working just as hard to assist and maintain the players we already have, too.
There are differing opinions on our handling of past players such as Jacobs, Betts and Laidler and whether they could/should have remained at the club, and what we should do with current players like Watson, Garlett and Lucas. The last two in particular seem like they have hit a brick wall and are going nowhere. Both have shown they can (or could) play AFL and both have (deservedly) been relegated to the VFL, but is the club doing enough in trying to help them resurrect their careers?
It may be that both players have attitude problems, and if so, I hope we are doing more than just 'plonking' them in the Northern Blues and telling them to get their acts together. I think both Buckley and Yarran had at one stage struggled with consistency and their defensive games until they were given defensive roles, so I'm wondering whether that is one thing that could be tried with these two as that seems to be one aspect of their games that is lacking?
Maybe their AFL days are over, but I just hope they are being offered plenty of support and that we are exploring every avenue before they leave the club. Talent is not so easily come by so it shouldn't be dispensed with without us knowing that we tried everything we could.
