In today’s article in the Sunday Mail there are a few things that are of concern.

The Crows wee this year exposed as having failed to evolve with the AFL’s high scoring trends but van Berlo said there was no need for a tactical overhaul next season.

“We certainly have got some new strategies that will differ from last year. Hopefully it’s going to mean we score some more goals and be a bit more potent in that regard. But the way we have been playing the past couple of seasons has been working for us and we’re not going to change that too much”.

“People might wonder where we’re going to move forward but Luke Jericho has been begging for a chance up forward and this will be his year to have a red hot crack at that. We’ve still got Nathan Bock and Brett Burton up there and as midfielders we can help out with a few goals as well”.
1. So despite Craig’s gameplan being exposed we’re still going to play a virtually identical style of play. That’s certainly something to look forward to! All I can say is that it’ll be a positive one way or another; the gameplan will finally work or Craig will be found lacking and more questions will be asked.

2. Why hasn’t Luke Jericho had the chance to have a “red hot crack” at a spot any other year? You’re trying to tell me with our mediocre forward line there was never any room for him? I find it quite comical that everyone’s saying this is his year when he’s been here for 4 years and it’s been the same old story every year. 2007 was meant to be his make or break year, obviously not, because he ‘didn’t have the opportunity’.

3. Nathan Bock up forward? Give me a break. I think it’s clear for everyone to see that his best position is CHB and yet the only one who can’t seem to realise this is Neil Craig.

4. We’re going to rely on Brett Burton to kick our goals? Please have mercy.

It’s been nothing but smiles around here lately and with all the new acquisitions perhaps rightfully so, but when we start talking about gameplans and players to fill holes all of a sudden the fun goes out the window…

1. Lets wait till Feb 20 before asking questions on game style

2. Correct the Jericho comment seems odd

3. Nathan Bocks best position is CHB, doesnt mean he is crap up forward.

4. Brett Burton offers comic relief

5. Same old same old

Jericho will replace Welsh position wise. Give Jericho a solid 5 or so games and it will show whether he is ready or not

Burton isn't that bad, he just needs to stay consistant.

Burton, Jericho and Gill.....oh my god what a combination

Bock can play up forward, he is a big boy which means if our midfield is firing he will hold his ground and they will hit him on the ***. I like the idea of him rotating between the forward line and Backline.

Over all 2008 is in my mind the transition stage for the NEW team of 2009. Saying that I think we won't be that bad next year. We will have a new leadership group and a much bigger role played by the younger players.

Bock is a mediocre forward. CHB please. He dominated when play there. Seems like Moran might get a chance at CHB or Stevens is going to play there with Bassett back into the 3rd tall role.

I really don't care. We will be an average team next year we will win and lose games so lets enjoy the wins we can get!

I sure hope so, and it defeats the purpose of a rebuild if you don’t play the youngsters, but I’m not entirely sure we’ll see a lot of youngsters next year. The likes of VB, Knights, Porplyzia and one of Maric/Griffin are a given, but I can’t see too many others playing, at least not on a regular basis. I hope I'm wrong but when it comes to crunch time Craig will always pick the veteran. We should’ve been trying to play as many youngsters as possible in the second half of this season and yet we didn’t.

I wouldn't take too much footy talk seriously at this time of the year. I doubt any club would willingly give away their tactical intentions for the following season, that'd be bad practice.

What WILL change...

The love of Nick Gill will CHANGE

I think he will become a very frustrating player to watch as time goes bad

I hope I am wrong though, watching him against the Centrals in the QF was inspirational....watching him in the GF was painful.

1. Im not sure about the 'game plan being exposed' arguement. Only person who continually banged on about that was Rucci, and i cant say i give him much credibility. I dont think we lost games because of the game plan being exposed, so much as lost to better teams (taking into account the fact we could rarely put anything remotely close to ours on the field because of injury).

2. Well, to be fair to Jericho, for once he took his opportunity last year, and was still dropped because we had other players playing the role we see him in. With some of those guys moving out, perhaps hes got less competition for a spot, and may get an extended run in the team. I know hes not popular on these boards, but id like to see him given a run in the team where he can settle in, and play his natural game. Maybe he'll make something of it. Meanwhile, im not sure what else you expect vB to do, bag him perhaps?

3. Team needs outweigh best position. If Moran can play CHB, then Bock will play up forward, simply because we need him up there.

4. Well, he'll certainly be one of our biggest targets. As a former goal kicking winner, and one of only four players in Adelaides history to kick 50 goals in a season, im not sure why we wouldnt be using him as one of our spearheads now.

I think you're taking an overly negative spin on what was a fluff piece article.

I'll just wait for the walls to start tumbling down..... ;)

I think people are forgetting one of our younger players that Craig is a HUGE wrap for that I suspect will get quite a few games next year in our forward line - Tippett.

My understanding was that before he got injured last season he was close to making his debut.

Bock to CHB please. He is good a CHF but he is better at CHB. Playing him forward makes it harder for tippet and the like to get a gig. Im more excited by there introduction and development.

Stevens played well enough last year to command a spot in the side but is his inclusion hampering our 'ideal' structure? Is he good enough to command a HBF to himself or is he the 'utility' we keep on the bench? That extra tall???

Jericho...like i said in another post, im pretty much over him but would still like to see him do well. I see walker as a similar but more exciting prospect.

Time shall tell!

Interesting you say this, Weaver on the draft board said something similar

75. Adelaide – Taylor Walker

The Crows have done nicely out of the NSW scholarship scheme. Walker is a mobile, roaming, tall half-forward. Not really a contested marker or a true CHF, plays more a Steve Johnson role doing a lot of his damage after he has brought the ball to ground and switched into rover mode. Tends to play the game from side-to-side … from boundary line to CHF, or from CHF out the boundary. Really looks to use space more than make the play

A mate of mine who says he has inside information has told me that

Rutten is going to Play Full Forward

Griffin or Tippet in a Pocket

Gill or Tippet at CHF

and

Gallman will be our new Full Back

So much phailage in this topic. Once again it is left up to FD88 to liberate your souls.

1. What they mean is we'll still have an ultra-choking defense, it was just worded poorly. Doesn't mean we ain't gonna attack.

2. Jericho hasn't had a red-hot crack because Welsh has been holding down his precise position. With him gone, Jezza gets his (final) shot at making it.

3. Doesn't mean Nathan Bock is going to be a permanent forward. We're talking about flexibility here, and if matchups arise that allow for him to play up forward we take advantage of that. The shitty paper loves to mess around and twist things up. And yeah, we're going to reveal our exact tactics for the upcoming year to a paper full of writers with a seething hatred for the club.

4. Again the paper phails at life. Burton will be one of many avenues to goal, you know that, the club knows that, just watch and see as many other options come into play in 2008. It's just common sense, look at the list, it ain't happening like that.

It's a matter of flimsy comments coming out of a flimsy paper that has flimsy writers flimsily writing for it. Drummond loves to over-simplify certain things, word them to make something seem ludicrous when it's the angle he views it from and how he portrays it that is ludicrous. Trust FD88 (as you undoubtedly will) when he says that Drummond is off the mark here, as is the Sunday Phail.

1. Craig up until this year has a good record with his game plan. Injuries & an unsettled side didn't help. Sure he needs to revise it / have plan B, but let's judge that in 2008.

2. Jericho got dropped after being our leading goal-kicker against Carlton. I'm not convinced by him, but deserves to get a decent go in the side to prove 1 way or the other as he is a confidence player.

3. Agreed - Bock should be CHB, unless there is no matchup with only 1 tall forward for Rutten.

4. We need an even spread of goal-kickers.

Your mate has been pulling your leg - Rutten will play FB for most of 2008.

However, I do expect Gill, Tippett & Griffin to feature prominantly up forward.

As a ruckman or forward? He played about 10% of the season as a forward and I think he kicked one goal. So unless he was coming into the side as a ruckman, which I highly doubt, there wasn't really anything to suggest he could do a job up forward. I remember all the talk during the pre-season about his impressive ruckwork, and he showed some great signs in the ruck for West.

I like Tippett but he's probably done the least of anyone on our list and yet he's one of the most loved!

Good.

Then liberate our souls on why you carried on like a pork chop when Moss was selected in the rookie draft - and then deleted the post.

Our souls are still waiting to be liberated.

I heard NC on several times say he doesnt care what position a player is used in the SANFL he cares more about how they play in their given role and their attack on the ball. The thing with Tippett though is he played so little, so unless you see him train every session it is hard to gauge as an outsider exactly where he is at. Obviously NC has seen him closely at training and been monitoring his few SANFL games enough to suggest he will play AFL footy very shortly. It would seem to unprofessional of him to say he is going to play if it was unfounded.
