Hewitt lovers are about as adept at stating convincing arguments in favour of Hewitt's abilities as the man himself is at playing an attacking, attractive (and successful) brand of tennis.
Define successful -

2 grand slam wins
world no. 1 ( How old was he ?? )
No major weapon like a big serve or a huge wingspan , just a big engine and a ********load of GUTS !!!!!

Jeez , has every body gotten sick of bagging out that **************** PHILLIPOUSSIS ??

Goodness NSWCROW take off your Green and Gold goggles for a second and think about how silly you sound.
Nah
I sound silly cos i didn't follow the herd ??
Sad day when more people hate HEWITT than hate JOHN HOWARD

It's always a win/win situation watching young Leyton.
He wins - you beauty, go Aussie!
He loses - he deserves it, the obnoxious nob!

Since he beat Sampras in the 2001 US Open final, it's been downhill from there. He just hasn't bothered to improve his game to challenge the new wave of players. He beat Nalbandian of all people to win Wimbledon (I mean really, does that even count?), to fulfill every tennis player's fantasy. And good luck to him. I mean, he's made over 15 million dollars playing tennis and he never has to work again. But that people still barrack for him after his insipid boring defensive style of play over the past few years (not to mention his instances of racial abuse and frequent general unsportsman-like behaviour) is just mind-boggling. It has nothing to do with tall-poppy syndrome. It has everything to do with a very talented guy just going through the motions and not doing enough to earn the support and respect that he (and his dopey fans) seems to think he's entitled to.

3 Grand slam finals, losing to federer twice (who can beat him?) and safin once. Its not his fault that he ran into unbeatable players.

That's pretty much it right there. Because yeah, Safin is real unbeatable . And if Hewitt was worthy of the praise that he and his lemming followers seem to think he deserves, he'd have found way to beat Federer by now.

Your "It's not his fault that he ran into unbeatable players" line just exemplifies the rabid idiocy of Hewitt fans. You've basically admitted that the guy just isn't that good.

So according to you ... there are many players who ''just arent that good''

When do they start or stop being good? Using Open wins as some sort of guide doesnt leave you many players to like... plus one day Federer will stop being good.

You sound more like a bandwagoner than a follower of tennis.

The reasons I like Lleyton were on show the first game.. 2 sets down and he crawls back and wins...because he has shown at times this intense desire to win.

I would rather a Hewitt who despite his limited abilities and the wrong physical requirements to play top shelf tennis , still goes out and gives his all and still makes the last 32, than a Scud who has all the talent and physical attributes in the world to be a top line player and he still wastes his talent

Yeah, Scud had all the opportunities in the world, what with getting a knee reconstruction every 2 or 3 years . I don't like the Scud much either for similar reasons, but at least he has some legitimate reason for not fulfilling his potential.

Hewitt has no excuses. Federer isn't a particularly big guy. Or fast. Or, well, anything. He just understands the game and hits the ball bloody well. Which, obviously, are the main necessities of playing tennis, rather than just aimlessly rallying for a while and then yelling "Come on!" after your opponent hits the ball into the net

Being able to come back from two sets down in the first round of your home grand slam against some absolute hack who you should have put away in straight sets and set up a convincing charge towards winning the tournament is not an argument in favour of supporting Lleyton Hewitt. It's the total opposite.

Not having read the previous 4 pages, Hewitt loses simply because the world has caught up and passed him.

He's still good, but the Euros, Blake, Roddick et al have gotten better.

A lot of people follow him still because of some jingoistic duty-bound obligation (John Alexander, are you there?), but his tennis isn't really that exciting. *Cough**cliche* Little Aussie Battler *cough**cliche** loves a scrap but ultimately gets beaten by more powerful/smarter/aggressive opponent.

I guess it all depends on what gets your goat - some guy hitting cross-court half-volley winners a foot inside the baseline or a grinder who needs to yell at himself to get his popgun game up against the big guys.

Each to their own.;)

The same rubbish being dished out from the Hewitt bashes Unfortunatly the once a year tennis fans don't have much idea about what goes on week in and week out on the tennis tour.

Still after weeks of discussion all the Hewitt bashes are still yet to come up with a valid argument why not to like him and what makes him any different from 90% of the players on the tour. Instead they just go back to insulting him

I have posted this before but I will do it again. I believe that I have valid arguments. If I had never seen a tennis match before and then watched Hewitt in action I would still form the same opinions.

I dislike Hewitt more than any other athlete or celebrity on this planet. I don't know him personally so I can only form an opinion on the image that he projects. My reasons are shown below:

Hewitt is a bogan and I am not a fan of bogans. The feelings of supporting against a **************** overide the feelings of supporting an Australian athlete. i.e. I would prefer to support a good Chinese player over an Australian who is a ****************. The reasons for my dislike are listed below:

* "Cmon!!!!" I really hate it when the bogan yells this after winning a point. It is great to be emotional after an important point is won. Hearing this ten times a match is annoying.

* His annual complaints about the surface in Melbourne. This tournament is contended by 128 players. Not just you Lleyton.

* His regular outbursts at umpires and linesmen. The arrogance he displays is unbelievable.

* He has had many confrontations with other players. Why is he always involved in this garbage?

* Why does he always seem to develop an injury when he is losing a match?

* His ridiculous Swedish hand gestures and backwards cap.

* He is the poster boy for the lame Fanatics.

* His supporters claiming that he is disliked due to "tall poppy syndrome". There are lots of other "tall poppies" who are not disliked by such a large number of people (Warne, Thorpe, Hackett, Ponting etc.). If he didn't carry on like an idiot he would not be this unpopular.

My opinions are based on watching his games on TV and live at the Australian Open. They are not based on the opinions of others or biased media reporting. I respect his tennis game and his will to win but his antics are a disgrace.

Fair points but I want to highlight this one

I havent seen one thread on the weather and those who complained...yet I wonder if Hewitt said it was too hot to play how many threads there would be calling him a spoilt brat

Thats the inconsistency of the hate.

Exactly Russell complained about the court after his first round loss to Hewitt sayign that had it been like last year he would have won. Nobody reports that because no one cares.

People are more critical of Hewitt because they already dislike him. I know that I am biased against him. I already have a dislike of him so I now find minor things that he does annoying. This bias hasn't been formed over night and his actions (listed in my post above) have created it for me.

Hewitt has no cause to complain about the heat because he is always looked after in that he is mostly scheduled to play at night

There was an article in the West that indicated a few players were moaning about the heat. Lleytons response ( along with Federer ) was that thats tennis , you play in heat etc...

I was expecting threads about the players who did complain... none

Safin is unbeatable when he is on.First of all i am not a hewitt fan.Making 3 grand slam finals and losing to federer twice is not exactly going "downhill" by any definition.Safin has beaten federer in the semi final and was red hot in the finals.Tell me, who can beat federer in a grand slam final?? .If it was some other player he ran into other than Federer, we might not be having this conversation. There is no shame in losing to Federer, hewitt came up second best TWICE.There is no shame in that. While i am not a fan of hewitt, people in this forum think that they have a clue about tennis. You people just love to hate blindly, any objective discussion of tennis is subject to personal insults :thumbsd:

Hewitt is hated because he has a history of acting like a buffoon, not because he can't play tennis. Most people recognise that he is the best Australian player in about 20 years (Maybe Rafter has a claim although Hewitt has achieved as much as him with at least five years to go in his career).

The whole Wayne Arthurs thing at the Australian Open just showed up the tall poppy syndrome. Poeple coming on here sayng that he is a legend and calling him 'King Arthurs' just showed Australia's obsession with battlers who are good but not great.

People say Arthurs was a top bloke, no doubt he was but perhaps thats why he never really did much in tennis besides a few solid performances and Hewitt is a two time grand slam open winner.
