Re: What is Cousins trade value?

MG played some good games this year and i believe definitely has another year in him!
Also this business about Collingwood hiring a Private Investigator to follow Cuz around! Surely he would be pissed off with that!
He will fill the void and more at Morrabbin, and i would welcome him with open arms!
He was my fav player even when he was West Coast and am hoping we can land him at the Saints!

I think Collingwood are still favourites to sign Cousins but I am more confident about our chances than I was a week or two ago. From recent reports it sounds like we are now going to make a serious bid for him.

Providing he is given the all clear by the AFL and is over his drug issues I think Cousins would be a great recruit for us. Living in Perth I have seen a fair bit of him playing for the Eagles and there is no doubt he is a brilliant player and one of the hardest trainers you will ever see. With us losing another fanatical trainer in Harvey, having someone like Cousins around would be a great replacement for him both on and off the field.

totally agree plugger, although i cant help feeling we have a bit more of an edge over collingwood now.
he said in the herald sun today that cousins was seen at MSAC (Aquatic centre) with Roo, Dal and bally... VERY GOOD SIGNS I SAY! imagine those 4 together! :) :)

It certainly won't hurt our chances with Cousins being mates with Gardiner and knowing a few of the other Saints players when it comes to him making a decision. With Collingwood the only person he would probably know there is Malthouse and I'm not sure if that is exactly a positive for them.

Re: What is Cousins trade value?

Agree that he would struggle for best 22. We have the young guy, Ben McEvoy, as well who is supposed to be pretty decent. Have yet to see MG produce anything of worth, so quite skeptical about his ability to stay fit. See what happens with a full preseason for him that hopefully can be injury free.

Wish March would hurry up - I am missing the footy already!

Re: What is Cousins trade value?

McEvoy was used as a lead up forward through and really didn't break even with his ruckwork yet (plus that now infamous headbutt), MG might struggle with the pace of the throw ins and such set to increase since he is more of a tap ruckman than a roaming ruckman, but at the same time you could almost stick him at FF and use Rooey and Kosi (Kosi not so much) as genuine lead up forwards.

McEvoy is really our only prospect though, since van Rheenan has a foot issue.

Re: What is Cousins trade value?

i am starting to believe we will get cousins now. i don't really like him as a player and can not care less what he does in his own time as long as it does not affect the club. I am not sure gardiner and him together is actually a good thing at all. However I do think that Gardiner is good insurance at what is most likely a minimum incentive based wage.

So perhaps it will be StKildas bid with mates and a bit of salary cap space (half Robert Harvey due to veteran status) vs Malthouse and Collingwood providing him with off the feild financial incentives (marketing etc).

God I hope we get him.

And I've said before regardless of whether he's at the Sains he and MG are gonna hang out anyway. May as well be with both working towards the same thing.

BTW, I love him as a player... His confidence /(arrogance knowing how good he is) is just unreal. Ball, Hayes, Dal Santo, Goddard, Cousins and Cameo's from Montagna (hoping either improves his running or plays HFF), Schneider, Gram and Ray... Get on board. That is a hard and skillfull midfield. I could sit in the pig pen and kick bags with that delivery!

how can u not like him as a player!
he is a champ... and he will be awesome for us (providing we get him) next year, and he will add alot of leadership qualities.
NUMBER 9- BEN COUSINS- And get on him for the brownlow :)

This from the Hun:

Ben Cousins and Michael Gardiner could be reunited at St Kilda

Damian Barrett | October 11, 2008 12:00am

BEN Cousins and Michael Gardiner could again be at the same club next year, with St Kilda preparing to reunite them.

The Saints will meet Cousins again next week, with the club's football department finalising its thoughts on the possibility of recruiting the 2005 Brownlow medallist.

Footy department representatives, probably coach Ross Lyon and Matthew Drain, will then be asked to address the St Kilda board.

Lyon has already met Cousins to discuss the prospects of a comeback to football after an AFL-imposed 12-month suspension for behavioural problems relating to substance abuse.

"We're all interested in Ben Cousins, but what I'd like to say is that's clearly in the hands of the AFL Commission (to allow him to play)," Lyon said.

"Ben's health is a priority, but everyone deserves a second chance."

Cousins was seen recently at MSAC at Albert Park with senior Saints players Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball and Nick Dal Santo.

Gardiner, 29, was yesterday given at least one more year on an AFL list when the Saints agreed to extend his two-year stay through to the end of 2009.

Stephen Milne, who kicked 60 goals from 24 matches this year, also had his contract extended, along with Robert Eddy, who made his debut this year.

The AFL Commission will discuss Cousins when it meets on Monday.

Re: What is Cousins trade value?

Ben would look good in Red, Black and White.
He is as arrogant as they come, but with the skills to back it up.
Im getting tingley thinking about it.
Lets hope he has shampooed and conditioned and that hair folicle is clean as a whistle.

We all know that Ben Cousins would be a risk to pick up, and who knows, we may not get the opportunity anyway.

But I believe that we are in a position next year, injuries permitting, to give it a crack at saluting, and Ben Cousins would be a very welcomed player to assist achieve that!! He is a proven star!! And let's be honest, there are plenty of other players out there that play up often and manage to get away with it, often !!!

If Cousins gets the AFL's go ahead & then nominates for the National Draft then we've got a better chance of nabbing him.

If he only nominates for the PSD then he's heading for the Filth.

I'm predicting him being picked up in the ND with the pick the Dogs gave us (#48).

Some of them even kick 100 goals in a season.

Shhhhhh... who said that?

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said on Monday that a team could have a win taken away from it if there was evidence that one player who had played a significant role in that game had tested positive to drugs on match day.

Nixon said while one club who was previously interested in recruiting Cousins was put off by Demetriou's statement, that has not been the case elsewhere.

"Quite the opposite," he said. "I met with a club today and we discussed it and we all thought that it's actually quite an incentive to make sure that Ben complies."

Nixon said there are still two AFL clubs — believed to be St Kilda and Collingwood — in serious talks about taking on the 2005 Brownlow medallist next year.

Read on Saintsational that on SEN Ricky Nixon mentioned that the club that had gone cold on Ben had it's own player problems and that he didn't think they were the best club to accommodate Ben. The club he just recently met with had a plan in place to not only help him as a player, but as a person as well. He was very impressed with the presentation. Can't help to think that the club is us. With how many times we've been asked about Ben all our officials have said his health is a priority. Read last week in an article that we'd be meeting with Ben and his management this week. You do the math.

i hope we get him i believe he is a big chance to help us out...
i also believe having gardiner in the club and his turn around could help ben out with his personal demons

i also think as a part of his contract he should have to do school runs and things of the like to open peoples eyes up to the effect of drugs and that it draws you in..

no matter what club he plays for

As of last week, Collingwood was his preferred destination after meeting with the players and coaching staff recently, and I've heard they have put forward a proposal to help with his rehabilitation. Collingwood have been a bit quiet regarding Cousins lately, but that's understandable because he hasn't been re-registered by the AFL yet, but if he is permitted to enter the December draft, then I expect Collingwood to announce their interest then, and not before then.

It could come down to who has the earlier draft pick between Collingwood and St.Kilda, and because St.Kilda beat Collingwood in the Semi Final, it means that Collingwood will most likely pick him first. If so, then reuniting Cousins with Michael Gardiner would not have been a wise choice anyway. If for some reason he is in the national draft, then I expect Collingwood to use their number 46 pick for him which they got from Sydney.

It was worth it, even if we won't get Cousins as a result !
