Anyone seen World War Z?

Watching how it all goes down initially makes me think just how hard it would be to put any best laid plans into place. Say you work in the city, and during the day, there's a sudden exponentially fast spread of a zombie virus. If you commute by train to the city, you're farked - you'd be hard pressed to find any car that would be willing to take you unless you were with someone you knew, and getting out would be a nightmare. Unless you got a train really quickly, you'd miss out and I'm sure the trains would stop running pretty quickly. If you drive into work and park in an undercover car park, just getting to your car would be tough, and then trying to get out among the chaos would see you virtually at a stand still.

If you work outside the city it wouldn't be as bad but the roads would still be absolutely chaotic. If you got stuck, again you're susceptible to attack as the infection spreads to all areas of the suburbs. Having a weapon like a golf club or something would be virtually useless against the fast, psycho zombies when there's hundreds of them around going nuts.

I think what would happen, rather than so many people fleeing and dieing, would be a lot of people would try to bunker down in whatever building they could find, once they realised there's no escape. There'd be a lot of people boarding up shops, offices, homes, whatever and waiting it out. If the zombies were strong and aggressive, they might eventually find you, but I think a lot of people would initially survive by hiding everywhere in buildings. Certainly not the 99% zombie toll that we typically see in zombie apocalypses.

Farms and secluded homes would be absolute safe havens and prime real estate. It wouldn't be so easy as "hey let's go find a farm or a cruise ship or a crane". Everyone would have the same idea and unless you own something or are right there at the time of the outbreak, you'd be out of luck and likely to be told to **** off. IMO there's absolutely no way you'd be able to claim the cruise ship if you weren't already there. Do people think there's ever a time when there's nobody on a cruise ship? There's always security staff and maintenance personnel etc.

Most people who managed to get out of the city would most likely head for country homes of relatives. If you really wanted to find somewhere where people would let you in and you didn't have a country home, the best bet would be trying to drive much further than everyone else. Say you're in Melbourne and everyone is taking the major highways out of the city, then you'd want to head as far away as your petrol would take you and get there before everyone else. Every man and his dog would be stopping at Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and nearby towns but I reckon heading somewhere random and remote would actually be a better idea - somewhere with a small population, where even if there were zombies, they'd be in much smaller and more manageable numbers.

So if you managed to survive, I really don't think you'd have time to plan much if the whole population was going nuts. You'd literally grab what you can and bolt the heck out of the zombie zones. Then if you found somewhere safe, the first week or two would be spent sitting around trying to work out what the hell to do. It would be then and only then that the need to sustain oneself would become an imperative and the sheer terror of making trips and raiding nearby properties would be a reality.

We were chatting about this over the weekend. I think the toughest part would be surviving the initial panic and looting. We'd have to get our group together and hope numbers would help us out. A few of our friends are critical. We have a paramedic, carpenter and an experienced outdoorsman. First step would be getting supplies and some weapons. There is a marina very close to us. We'd want to try and take a boat and head out to one of the small gulf islands. I'm hoping zombies can't swim. Then we'd have to fortify the place a little and build a camp. Lots of fish and fertile ground to grow stuff. We'd wait out the zombies until they start to rot.

Somewhere like Tocumwal......but they have people worse than zombies.

Seeing as how I live in the "inner" suburbs, attend a university and frequent shopping centres, I'd say there is literally no point thinking about survival since I'd end up part of the Zombie horde for sure. If by some chance I was at home, get in the car, get off main roads as fast as possible and high tail it for the NT.

Australia is in the enviable position that we can just close our borders in the event of zambies, just hope it doesn't originate here :p

Yep. If it takes time to infect someone there's time to escape the city before it becomes critical. Or if its really fast acting then the originating country will be zombified before any infected people can reach here. If its a slow spreading plague it should be able to be contained to a city / country or at worst continent. And if its fast acting the same.

The most realistic one in this respect was 28 Days Later where it was contained to the UK. A worldwide plague is less realistic (hmmm). Worst case then would be infection in mainland Europe, Asia or Middle-East as all joined by land. Add in if Seuz Canal is narrow enough (ships stranded or abandon maybe?) and takes out Africa as well.

O Rly? say that to the boat people! We can't even afford to cover even 20% of our top end in surveillance.

After watching a few zombie movies etc, the one place you do want to go to is the US. They always save the world...single handedly

wouldn't matter if we were able to remain zombie free, and protect our borders, some group of unwashed do gooder would demand that we let the zombies in as they have rights too.
