This is one of those little things that has bugged me for years, and I never could quite figure it out...

What is the difference between a Chairman and a President. For example...

Rick Hart - President of Fremantle Football Club
Dalton Gooding - Chairman of the West Coast Eagles Football Club

They do the same job, but have different titles. Does anyone know why?
I'd appriciate any answers...this has bugged me for years!!!

Because one is the President of a football club while the other is the Chairman of a corporation?

President has more to do with on field issues... where as the chairman (or CEO) is more taking care of the business of the football club and the money coming in and going out.

For example, the Bulldogs CEO comes from a Rugby background and knows next to nothing about AFL (or at least knew nothing when he started). When introduced to Scott West he asked "Are you on the board here?" But, that doesnt mean he hasn't done a hell of a job turning around the club.

then whats the difference between a chairman and a CEO??

i must agree, ive never understood why there are three different titles... i understand two of them now though.

These roles are all dependent on what sort of organization.
CEO is often the chairman.
The top spot which is elected by the board which is selected by the shareholders.
CEO generally has presidents working for him.
the CEO is the chief executive officer, the president the chief operations officer
executive is planning delegation large scale signs off on things and the COO/presidents gets the jobs done on daily operational basis and answers to the CEO.
organizations can and do have multiple presidents for various operations.
These things however in certain organizations are not the case as these can all be made different roles.
But the chairman will be the guy elected by the board elected by shareholders, so the majority shareholder will often be chairman and CEO as it is his company and he holds the shares and elects him self chairman as he has established his own board which will have to elect him and then has his presidents handle operations.
You can see where a lot of room for fat cats at the top of companies come in if they are regulated.

One of them sits in the 'chair' as the head of the boardroom
The other's arse is too sore to sit:D

btw none of the above posts so far are even close:o

No difference at all. President is a more American term for the same thing. Both mean you get to sit at the pointy end of the table.
yeh...that's what I thought.
That said, why would they not all be just Club Presidents or just Club Chairmans. Not 7 Clubs with presidents and 9 with Chairmen.

Only thing I can think of is that Presidents are voted in by the Members to run the club, where as Chairmen are employed/elected by the club executive.
Am i getting warmer?

Freo's president isn't voted in by the members so I don't think that's it.

incorrect
A president is the head figure of a board of directors, a chairman is elected to chair board meetings as in direct the meetings.
the board of directors looks at the strategic view as in the long term view of the club and employs the key figures in the club. The board employs the CEO and operations manager etc. the board are kinda like supervisors and planners whilst the CEO and operations managers etc run the club.
The board of directors choose their own president.

Orrite...now this is just plain pissing me off...

Benny you know how to Google? do some research for yourself... here is a head start...

The office bearers are defined by what is known as "Articles of Association" ( there is aa alternate newer fancy name). This defines the admin and running rules of the organisation Like a "Constitution"

The Chairman is the leader of the board of directors (as someone already said ) to officiate & sort of control board meetings and be the"leader" of the board ( sometimes has veto or overiding powers) this is typically a Corporate (Company...PTY Limited or Public Coy "Ltd") term.

President may be exactly the same role but often is a term given to a non corporate structure eg Non limited liability entity like a non profit club. The President term is nore of the figure head that places a human as a tangible representative of the entity to sign as highest authority. Often will infact be chairman of a board of a corporate trustee who controls or influences aspects of the larger conglomerate of entites which form the "whole" organisation. Big headed folks like Eddie Everywhere prefer the President title... but in his case he may not necessarily be the actual Chairman of Colliwobble Pty Ltd??? clear as Mud???

dumbed down .......
Clubs have generally have Presidents
Companys have Chairman of the Board of Directors:)

PS
Wet Toast is actually "Indian Pacific Pty Ltd" = Chairman
Shockers are a non profit gathering of drunken sailors and rascals = President

Depends on the individual club's constituton and legal stucture. Usually the Members elect the Committee, and the Committee among themselves elect which one of them is boss/chair/President.

We love our corporation/franchise/soulless entity.

Hows the MOB doing these days? :D

Re Hart and Gooding

One ( gooding ) is in a successful club and the other ( hart ) isnt ,,bye bye hart at the end of the yr along with your coach

It was announced last year that this year is Goodings last year, so I doubt he will be sacked. The deputy chairman will be taking over next yea (his name escapes me)

Why is it Hart's fault we aren't winning games? Surely the presidents job is taking care of off-field stuff. And we are one of the biggest and best performing clubs off field.
