Contrary to popular belief I was born in Melbourne. East Melbourne to be exact, across from the MCG.

My mother was born in Suva, Fiji. My father was born in Pune, India.

On my mother's side: my grandmother was born in Mumbai (Bombay back then), and my grandfather was born under the stairs in a local village in the Indian state of Gujarat.

My grandfather moved from India to Fiji when he was young, and then came to Melbourne in 1964 in study at Pharmacy College Parkville. Whole family moved here in 1973 when mum was 2.

They came here by boat; so when I tell people that I was born here along with us being being boat people, everyone gets confused.

Dad is Serbian ****ing. Mum is Croatian ****ing.

Every morning when I look in the mirror, I want to kill myself ****ing.

100 percent German-Australian.

Mum's ancestors came from Brandenburg and settled in Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills in the 1840s. They started a winery in the 1860s which is still in operation.

Dad's family came from South-Central Prussia (present day Northern Germany) and settled in Mount Pleasant in the Adelaide Hills in the 1850s. They were pastoralists in the business of cattle and sheep. Grandad and Nan live still live on the original property in a house that was built for my great-great-Grandad in the 1920s.

I have been heavily influenced by German-Australian culture since birth. I'm technically a Lutheran (more agnostic these days) even though I was educated at Anglican and Uniting Church schools. I was raised on a mixture of German and Australian food, I'm quasi-proficient with the German language, and I enjoy the wide array of German-Australian culture available in Adelaide and the surrounding areas.

My dad's parents were both English. He was born in England, but raised in South Africa. My mum's parents were Greek and English and she was born and raised in Zimbabwe.

They moved to Melbourne in the late 80's and as a result, I'm a first generation Aussie.

Yeah the ones in my mums side settled in Hahndorf when they came out and have been there ever since. Had to change their surnames during the war then changed back again afterwards.

Scottish and English on my dad's side, German and English on my mum's. I'm at least 5th generation Australian on both sides, though, possibly even longer than that. Ancestors on my dad's side settled in Melbourne when the population was only 5 digits long.

I have a few friends who have family from pune/born in pune. Still have connections with India?

Born and raised in India/UK till I was about 8, more specifically Mumbai and Northern Ireland. Moved to Sydney and haven't left since! I found it pretty easy to adapt to Australian culture growing up probably due to the fact I lived in the UK so had some exposure to 'western' culture.

I visit India every couple of years due to family connections and have surprisingly grown to love the country.

Since there are a lot of different cultures etc within India, I would be classified as Maharashtrian.

My dad's side is from Pune, but I don't keep in touch with my dad for about 12 years now so I haven't been to Pune. But if you are interest, I can PM you my dad's name and see if you know of the family.

I know someone with a similar story as you. He grew up in the UK and moved to Sydney during primary school.

So you'd speak Marathi at home?
