We know the drill - 12 stadiums have been submitted, FIFA will cull 2 (presumably Blacktown and Carrara) and play the World Cup on the other 10. Other sports are locked out of those stadiums for 4 weeks before the World Cup starts.
But do all stadiums remain locked out to other sports for the World Cup period, or do the lockouts end when the stadium has hosted its last game?
For example, if Kardinia Park is only used for group games, would it then become available for the AFL to play games on once the knockout stages start?
And, assuming ANZ in Sydney is selected for the final on a Sunday night, the MCG's last game would be a semi final on the Wednesday night.
After that semi final is finished, would there be anything to stop the AFL from ripping the soccer goalposts out, putting AFL posts up, changing the signage, re-painting the ground, and playing AFL games on the MCG on the Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoon?
It's a gap in the World Cup program, and would present an opportunity for the AFL to showpiece their game for international visitors - and with the AFL having been locked out of the MCG for a couple of months beforehand, there will be a backlog of blockbuster games to catch up on.
And if the World Cup final doesn't kick off till Sunday night, is there any reason why FIFA could possibly have any objection to that?
