We know the drill - 12 stadiums have been submitted, FIFA will cull 2 (presumably Blacktown and Carrara) and play the World Cup on the other 10. Other sports are locked out of those stadiums for 4 weeks before the World Cup starts.

But do all stadiums remain locked out to other sports for the World Cup period, or do the lockouts end when the stadium has hosted its last game?
For example, if Kardinia Park is only used for group games, would it then become available for the AFL to play games on once the knockout stages start?

And, assuming ANZ in Sydney is selected for the final on a Sunday night, the MCG's last game would be a semi final on the Wednesday night.
After that semi final is finished, would there be anything to stop the AFL from ripping the soccer goalposts out, putting AFL posts up, changing the signage, re-painting the ground, and playing AFL games on the MCG on the Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoon?
It's a gap in the World Cup program, and would present an opportunity for the AFL to showpiece their game for international visitors - and with the AFL having been locked out of the MCG for a couple of months beforehand, there will be a backlog of blockbuster games to catch up on.
And if the World Cup final doesn't kick off till Sunday night, is there any reason why FIFA could possibly have any objection to that?

There may be a short period after the matches finish, but it shouldn't be much. One of the things will be changing all the signage in the stadium- because all the boards will be set for World Cup sponsors- fIFA won't allow anything not connected with them in the stadium- they'll even change the name of the stadium for the tournament if there is a corporate connection, I believe.

But I'd expect that games of other codes could be played within a week of FIFA completing their use of the stadium in question. Workers come in, change everything around- reconfigure any stadia that need it, and get the pitch ready for whatever sport is on tap- you sure won't see AFL markings anywhere on the MCG during the World Cup.

FIFA does the four weeks prior to get the stadium set up the way they want it and have the pitches prepared for soccer- very much like the groundskeepers brought in for the NFL the weeks prior to the Super Bowl. The fields are prepared like puttig greens.

Is true. I think the standard procedure is to call each stadium "FIFA World Cup Stadium [insert city name here]"

Sounds like a job for Les Burdett! :p

I reckon they should make a start on it as the players are walking off the field.

Ben Buckley has at times spoken of the 6-8 weeks requirement for stadia.

The presumption I make based on that is that venues used ONLY for the Group matches are no longer required after their last matches.

However, does FIFA demand they remain in FIFA WC configuration/signage for the duration?

And, had the AFL not forced the Govt to guarantee access to host cities - it'd've been a bit hollow for, for example in Sydney for the NRL to have the SFS technically available - but, be excluded from the host city.

Given that we've often seen AFL at Docklands on a Friday, Rugby (U or L) on the Saturday, and AFL again on the Sunday......you'd assume the turn around on venues could be pretty quick.

However, where 'reconfiguration' happened (eg Geelong) and 'deconfiguration' is required (or, also, the removal of 10,000 temporary seats such as at Townsville/Newcastle) then who knows what the specific time frames would be. Both to get the ground in a position to 'recover' and then have it match ready for NRL or AFL.

The MCG may be alright, because there's no sponsorship, but then again, it does have the word "Cricket" in its title, so maybe not.

Australian sports venues are capable of doing those sort of turnarounds in 8 hours. There's no logistical reason why it couldn't be done.
And if the stadiums aren't under contract once they've hosted their last game, the quicker they can get back to normal and minimise the impact on their regular users the better.

I still wouldn't be surprised to call it "FIFA World Cup Stadium Melbourne" or something similar.

I think the naming is more a FIFA thing than anything else- non of the internationakl commentators I've heard actually use that type of descriptor in their broadcast- for example, in south Africa, I definitely heard references on television to Ellis Park, Loftus versfeld, and Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Think it is only for FIFA advertising and signs at the actual venue- the media aren't buying what FIFA does with the names.

"Cricket" isn't a commercial or corporate entity meaning FIFA won't have a problem with it. Thank god FIFA haven't sold out football to the corporates in the way you see with NFL/NBA etc etc.

If there is a non-corporate version of the stadium name that can be used, otherwise it's [City] Stadium or FIFA World Cup Stadium [City].

According to our Bid Book our stadia will be named:

MCG
Geelong Stadium
Stadium Australia
SFS
Blacktown Stadium
Brisbane Stadium
Perth Stadium
Adelaide Oval
Gold Coast Stadium
Newcastle Stadium
Canberra Stadium
Townsville Stadium

So only a few changes for existing stadia there.
