When was the last time neither side named a captain?

That was the unexpected subplot of the Bears’ clash with the Roys last week. I can’t recall it happening before. It wasn’t even due to suspensions. Instead, it seemed to be the result the perfect storm of injuries, form, politics and good old unforeseen circumstances colliding at once. This rare absence of leadership resulted in a captaincy anomaly.

This raises the bigger questions of where do captains actually play when they are named and does it matter? Is there a link between a captain’s position and individual or team success?

Over the coming weeks, I’ll examine the positions played by each club’s captain(s) since Season 34 to try and answer some of these questions.
