AFL Club
Carlton
Bannister - is keen to play key position in the back half for teh Blues this year. Not sure if he's big enough of wise enough for this but maybe we could use him in a back pocket or back flank. Is super fit, strong and has good pace. Is also a handy 190cm.

McGrath - Is proving his worth to teh club IMO but I can't see him spendiing too much time in the midfield this year, well I hope not anyway! Maybe a back pocket/back flank or tagging role.

Wiggins - Has been tried everywhere and not fired a shot. Is a dedicated team player, very fit, decent pace and is strong enough. Attacks the pill hard and throws his body on teh line. Needs to get a kick though! Maybe as a medium forward on the flank or in the pocket. Would provide great pressure in the forward 50.

Prendergast - Does he play as a mobile ruckman, ruck-rover, wingman, CHB or what? The best I've sen him play is across half-forward running the guts out of his opponent (also kicked 3 against the BL 2 years ago). With Hartlett, Bower, Edwards, Raso, Kennedy, O'hAilpin, Waite and Fisher around him his days are numbered. Could he provide the physical presence we need at CHF like Earl Spalding did with Waite and Fisher around him? Or Bullants? Maybe worth a shot while Kennedy, Bower, hartlett, etc develop?

Sporn - good Bullants player or can he finally get fit and step up? On his last legs at the Club unless he does something drastic this year for the Blues. Can play anywhere, is a tall 188cm and does good stopping jobs (Hird a few times) but just isn't consistent enough. Maybe a spot on the HBF, wing or as a tagging ruck-rover would suit? Liked him when used up forward also.

Thoughts on these guys and others?

ah the joys of the modern day coach, heres where I would play them:

Bannister - off a half back flank

McGrath - off a half back flank

and as for the others .. well i'm really not too sure ..

Bannister - With his size and strength ATM can only play in the back half, watched Carlton Vs Collingwood round 22 2004 the other day and he flogged buckley, but can't see him being a tagger regulary. Would play on an oppositions 2nd or 3rd best forward maybe.........eg. O'Keefe for the swans

McGrath - Will prove his worth this year as a back pocket/flanker.

Prendergast - Needs to play good football on the wing, his not good enough to play as a CHB or FB and we already have Thornton and Livo. He sure isnt good enough to play forward and will just get in the way of Lance and Fev. His height, pace and stamina all point to one thing, a koutifdes type role on the wing. The coaching staff are kidding themselves if they play him anywhere else.

Sporn - At the cross roads last year and got hit by one helluva train, obviously has talent, but dont they all! Only place I can see him is across half-back, but is there any room for him?

mcgrath livo ?
Bannister Thornton ?

maybe a spot there or as a defensive wingman but then you've got teague, houlihan, lappin, wiggins, carrazo etc.

Sporn will be a bloke who will put pressure on others in the side, although I hope he can turn it around and cement his spot in the 18.

Bannister - always appears to be to indecisive for my liking. He lacks vital footy smarts. Good disposal and pace but simply isn't good enough. Maybe back pocket this year, however, I can't see him lasting too many more seasons.

Mcgrath - ultimate team player and is rightfully rewarded for this with a place in the team. Tries his guts out every week and does a good job tagging medium paced midfielders and forwards (eg. Buckley). I would like to see him rotating through midfield and half back flank.

Prendergast - banished to the VFL forever. Then Essendon can take him. :D

Wiggins - lacks good disposal but makes up for it with a heart like a lion. If wiggins is delisted at the end of the year he should be kept on by the club as a member of staff. He is too nice a bloke to let go of. I've met him a couple of times and he is awesome.

Sporn - I don't know why but I really dislike Sporn. He just looks so lost on the footy field it is frustrating. He also seems to mope around when we are losing. He'll probably rotate between the firsts and second and play in the midfield or back flank.

Livo - he does his job, leave him alone (directed at people who constantly bag him).

Bannister - Tagger but heard he is too beefed up for that so if he doesn't perform in the back half straight away, then the Bullants.

Mcgrath - like him, Back pocket

Wiggins - Bullants

Sporn - Give him a chance but ultimately Bullants

Livo - Fullback (best and only option really unless Hartlett can do something magical in the NAB cup)

Prenderghast - Bullants reserves

Bannister - Top up player at best, and would not make our best 22 at the moment. Like the way he goes about things and would love him to prove me wrong, but you've gotta wonder whether he'd be at the club after this year.

McGrath - Has a couple of roles he can fill, either as a run with type or play on the small forward in the back pocket. Delivers the ball well enough, although I've never seen him use his right foot. Is almost the ideal bench player for us as he can also go forward should the need arise.

Wiggins - Love this guys courgage, as running with the flight of the ball with Byron Pickett bearing down on him is the perfect illustration. His entire game just seems to lack that edge that is required to play well at AFL level. Another one who will be looked at at the end of 2006.

Prendergast - Just doesn't have the game to make it in the AFL. Was taken as a project player and the "gamble" hasn't really paid off. Suspect he'll play most of the year with the Bullants and get delisted at the end of 2006.

Sporn - Injury prone but does have the class to make it in the AFL. Suited to a half back flank, or run-with role, he could really step up if he stays injury free. His game of Hird a couple of seasons ago proved that he can play at the elite level.
