With the best Melbourne players you have seen?

Honestly, there are times when I see him out there and simply think he can't be stopped. Smashed the in-form Schulz tonight, but that's nothing new. He does this kind of stuff every week.

Fast, strong, cannot be tackled, versatile, kicks goals (ok that's a lie). But the way I see it, he is the perfect modern day defender, and up there with the best I've seen wear red and blue.

Thoughts?

Thoroughly agree. He is everything you want in a defender AND he can hit targets by foot. Obviously it took him a little time to get back in to form but he is well and truly back to his AA best this year. Gun.

id like to know when matty scarlett got his first AA, and conversely what the youngest AA full back is, because if he continues to grow as a player which he will cuz he is still young, he will end up as a multiple AA fullback, and id like to know the last time melb had one of those

THE most valuable player on our list IMO

I'm only 22, but I'd say this current playing group has the most talented Melbourne players I have ever seen. No disrespect to the likes of Robbo, Yze and my old favourite player Jeff White, but Frawley is just staggeringly talented, as is Trengove and quite a few more

Frawl is the best Melbourne defender I have seen. He was sensational last night, only really bettered IMO by Martin and Sylvia.

Phenomenal talent. Still young as well. Easily the best defender we have had for a very long time. Not only does he stop his direct opponent from having any influence on the game, he sets up play across half back with his run and carry. His closing speed is truly amazing. Jack Reiwoldt has already come out and said he's the best defender in the comp. He will be as good as Scarlett, if he isn't already! I just don't think he will get the complete recognition from the footy world until we start playing and winning finals, even with his AA selection from last year.

If he continues his form he would be close to All Australian despite a slowish start to the year

Jamieson's injury has helped this situation

Also Heath Shaw in terms of playing of a back flank as i dont think JF would get a KP at this stage will sneak in now though imo

Will tell you in about 5 years, has got the ability and nous but still needs time to judge him with the best

IMO he already is the best key defender in the game (Fletcher past it and Scarlett is a little as well, he also doesn't really play FB as much anymore).

As it has been said he's got the perfect blend of strength, speed, skill and courage. I love how he always keeps his feet in contests and just runs away from the opposition :) .

He, Ben Reid, Michael Jamison and Harry Taylor.

Scarlett has turned from the best KPD of a generation to the best rebounding defender in the league. Unbelievable.

He's the best Melbourne defender since David Neitz but with the added ability to play on smalls as well as talls. Assuming natural progression continues, he has the tools to be one of our greats.

Would have loved him in 2000-2004, may have gotten us a little further, especially 02 and 04.

He's the superstar defender that comes around once a generation, will always be linked with riewoldt due to their draft positions, but not once have i thought we made a mistake. That draft was particularly fruitful with 200 game players such as Garland and Petterd taken

His attributes have been well covered in this thread, but his speed is so valuble. Eventually the legend will grow to the point where forwards will always be conscious of how fast chip is.

Could make a few brownlow contests interesting in the years to come, he is such a prolific player

He will be the best full back the club has had by the end. Probably the best backman I've seen in my time. Just ahead of Hughes, Wight and Neitz. Absolutely our best player. To have a shut down key defender that can generate attack, is a damn rare thing. You are getting in to Scarlett and Silvagni territory when you can do that.

Good point. We would have won a premiership if he was there then. No doubt. He was the one thing we didnt have.

im sorry what? which of essendon or the brisbane powerhouses would we have knocked off with 1 more player? ridicolous

Chip would have had a much easier job on Lloyd or Lynch than Al Nicholson

absoloutely no doubt about it, but saying essendon flogged us in 2000 only because of lloyd, or that we would have beaten the all mighy brisbane if frawley had shut down lynch is the stupidest thing ive ever heard

Scarlett debuted in 1998 but only played six matches before 2000.

He was first selected as All-Australian full back in 2003 in a team that won only seven games for the season.

Frawley looks a gun. :thumbsu:

I would say he's probably in the top five players in the history of the Geelong Football Club. On his longevity as an elite player I have him comfortably above Ablett Junior.
