Is he injured or playing VFL?

Recall him injuring his ankle a while ago.

Playing VFL.

Bate needs to iron out his inconsistencies. Needs to close the gap between his best game and his worst. His worst is putrid.

Looks like a player who can't play with an injury at all.

Still in my best 22 but needs a big kick up the arse.

He is in our best 22 at the moment, but if we go tall with our first pick this year or we target a KPF in trade week i can see this being his last year in it.

He would have to look at whats happened to Miller this year with Watts getting game time and think that the next high profile KPF drafted/traded will be put in the team in front of me.

Tradeable?

What would be fair?

Ultimately he is a wanted/needed player, however, IMO i do believe he is one of half a dozen players who could definitely be trade bait.

Bate has been given a dream run in our team the last few years while we have stunk it up. Him and Miller have pretty much been our tall forwards the past few years as we have had no one else. Now we are on the rise and have some good kids coming through, he finds himself having to earn a spot in the team.

With Tapscott coming through as well as Watts, Jurrah, Petterd, Dunn improving and also Sylvia and Bail being able to play a similar role to Bate if required, all of a sudden Bate is on the outer. His form has been patchy at best this season, but in his defense he has been carrying an injury. Next season will be the big test for Bate, and this is why the Dees will continue to improve, as everyone is fighting to hold there spot in the team.

Having said all that, Bate should be picked this week after a near BOG performance for Casey on the weekend.

If Bate played at his best regularly he'd be All-Australian. If he played regularly at his worst he wouldn't get a game for Casey 2nds. He just needs to bridge the gap between his best and worst.

that sports news website that quoted as watts and bate having agreed to new contracts is the site that bate rights for

I agree with his inconsistency, but he has never put in a performance even close to AA standard. I can't believe the raps Bate gets. He has not got the runs on the board and badly needs to talk to Lynden about repaying faith shown by the FD.

He certainly lacks intensity. Him, Maric, Strauss, PJ and a few other less intense players can look at new clubs if they don't want to put in 100% every match for the MFC or an affiliate.

Strauss ios a second year player. Cut him some slack.

I am big fan of Bate, i disagree with the intensity issues. When you go to a game next don't watch the play for 10 minutes just watch Bate work around the ground. He puts on numerous leads that are ignored or when the ball is kicked to him it rarely goes near him.

He is a CHF and relies a lot on the ball being delivered to him, as opposed to a midfielder who can win his own footy. His form suffered when the team was playing arguably our worst footy and limited supply up forward.

I've got faith he can turn it round, the big key is getting a full preseason the last couple of years he has suffered bad hamstring injuries in Feb/March which is a bad time to get injured. Also wouldn't mind seing him tried on a wing at 192 cm and with a big aerobic capacity he could be a difficult match up.

The wing? Bate has looked terrible this year as soon as the ball hits the deck. He really seems to struggle below his knees.

Bate just looked totally underdone whenever he played this year, at least from my perspective.

He looked slow, ungainly, and was struggling badly to pick the ball up off the ground. As such, I have to agree with whoever it was above who suggested that he can't play with injury, and I think that makes the upcoming pre-season very important for him, given that he needs to manage his body well and gain some momentum before the start of next year.

He's a great player when he's on form, and with this in mind, I see no reason why he can't be a significant part of our team in the next few years.

May as well try him there, more so in the pre season. He plays as a high half forward, not leading out of the goal square, so it's not unusual to see him work between the 50 m arcs even when starting as a forward.

I rate Matthew Bate & would much rather keep him!
But looking at the make up of the team next year & beyond i would like to know how the likes of Bate,Jurrah,Watts,Tapscott,Petterd,Dunn,Green & Sylvia are going to fit in the one side?
Plus you would think that our first pick in this years national draft would be a KPF?
